I love this game, I actually bought a ps3 just to play it again! My pc was not good enough to run the emulator and I found a ps3 with controller and mgs4 for only $80 on ebay :)

Posting this to possibly help anyone else with Codec Audio issues:
What fixed the codec calls for me was setting Driver Wake Up Delay to 200μs (Under the Advanced tab). Also make sure that, under the Audio tab, that Enable Buffering is checked, Audio Buffering Duration set to 100ms. All audio works perfectly for me now. Getting a solid 50-60fps.
I am playing the game just fine with similar settings to this, also running at 1080p, except Resolution Scale is set to 3840x2160 instead of 2560x1440. No issues AT ALL but a few rare background flickers here and there on the video of codec calls which is COMPLETELY tolerable.
I'm also playing on an i7-9700k w/ a 3080 12GB. I just ordered a Tomahawk Z790 and a i7-13700k to go with it, can't wait!
EDIT: Also, if it helps, I am running Serial NPUB31633 v2.00 w/ Canary patches.

that means you're running the game upscaled to 6k :D
1080p at 300% just scales the dimensions by 3x you're getting 6k instead.
the dimensions in the brackets are based on 720p as the resolution. so if you want true 4k then you need to set to 200%.

I'm pretty sure that with some love and care , they can , consoles now are 4x times more powerful that they used to be , but MGS4 is a big game , it will need a loooot of optimization , but they can :)
I must be missing something somewhere, I get very low fps seemingly due to CPU. I don't lose a single frame going from 1080p to 4k, so GPU is fine (laptop 3070). Thing is, my CPU is quite stong, i9 12900H. It's probably not using its full potential somehow.

@@LLRTVdid a workaround to get game saves working, loaded new game, then returned to title screen, the loaded save, All good, until i arrived with first meryl encounter scene, skipping or not, game freezes with no work around at All. Still not playable out beloved MGS4

How accurate is this compared to playing on a PS3? I kmow its got higher res and better fps but how accurate is that actual emulation of all the effects and cutscenes and such?
Im currently working on a video comparison , honestly its all resolution and frame rate , looks more crisp at 4K & 60fps , PS3 just looks more blurry at 720p
@LLRTV MGS4 is one of those games from almost 20 years ago that look amazing, same with Ninja Gaiden 2 on 360 ran through Series X back compat at 4K, also came out in 2008 and is a 360 exclusive

Shout out for my PS3 I had since 2008 or 09 since it hasn't broke down yet and only suffers from dust and a loud fan also MGS4 looks so good I wouldn't be surprised if people thought it came in 2012 or something a remaster would do wonders for it also fans bringing back the online is amazing I hope we get a master collection vol 2 with this game and its multiplayer

I have to double check my settings because i have missing textures due to low draw distance where it pops up when approach close rather then medium distance.

Yep , I playthrough it twice now , no issues, it actually plays better on the second run due to the shaders being already compiled 😁

game was running smooth with little crashes up until the rex tunnel part in act 4 where it constantly freezes and it cant progress, any help?

ive tried that and tried using old rpcs3 versions and it still crashes
Check the version of the game , RPCS3 update & version, patches being applied properly, check boxes
@@LLRTV somehow fixed it by unequipping the snake eye in the section before and enabling disable shadows patch, strange fix but i can finally finish this masterpeice

So I applied every setting as you have and I’m experiencing some slight issues.
The codec display is blank.
Ex. Calling otacon shows a black screen in his place. You can hear him clearly but it’s just blank.
The pause menu background displays black with messed up textures.
No sight reticles. ADS through scopes or binoculars with the solid eyes doesn’t show reticles.
Any idea what might cause this so I can adjust accordingly?

@@LLRTV the only patches I applied were the Canary, Framerate Unlock and the No Filters. Maybe the filters one is causing the issue? But idk why it would result with missing or broken textures as well.
If it helps, my pc specs are almost identical.

Yes, the color patches will cause a bug on codec , if you are looking for an optimal experience i would recommend turning that off , the color filter works well on non pre rendered cutscenes and gameplay.

I tried it 6 months ago and even at 300% resolution (4K), it was not this sharp looking... I will try it again now that i have a stronger GPU.
PS, how exactly do I make sure or install the most uptodate canary patches?
That's awesome, hopefully you can get it running 💪💪💪 , You will have to make a YML file on your patches folder and paste the canary patch code from the link in the description.

@@LLRTV Ok I made some progress but still need some help.
1. I put the Canary patches YML file in PS3 Patches folder, is there where it needs to go? I couldnt really find a RPCS3 folder/patches folder.
2. I copied all settings in the video but game maxes out at 30FPS, its a hard lock and not due to GPU only hitting about 40% usuage.
3. Lastly, I keep loosing audio after a few minutes of gameplay, might just be my headphones but no issues on other games. Im using the Cubevc* format.
4. Game still looks pretty soft in the enviornment/walls/carpet etc. Snake and his suit looks solid though ;)
Ok you will have to activate those patches in the emulator, make sure you have the latest firmware selected, and the patches to avoid Audio problems and skipping, the settings on my guide are displayed and working for my PC setup, I know it may vary

Issue 10148: To fix this problem, the solution is to downgrade RPCS3 to this version by copy pasting the contents of the archive to your current RPCS3 folder. After downgrading, delete the gamedata folder for the game (/dev_hdd0/game/YOURGAMESERIALHERE), relaunch the game, let it reinstall the gamedata, then finally when that's finished, close the game and update RPCS3 back to the latest version.

Is it stable? No random freezes anymore?
Random Freezes will occur always, the emulator is constantly compiling shaders , that's to be expected, but it's pretty much good for the whole game playthrough, I just finished mine with these settings
