WARNING to anyone buying Keysight (new or used) that's not a company - Keysight support is non-existent if you're an individual and not a company now. See the current discussion on the hp-agilent-keysight lists io mailing list with many people reporting the same experiences. Keysight support has gone downhill tremendously in the last couple of years, and they've just turned into a large company that primarily counts beans. I've had my own bad experience with Keysight support in the last couple of years and not being able to get firmware for older instruments as well, and having to scour the internet for others that got the same firmware from keysight just a couple of years ago before they stopped caring. Keysight does not care about the little guy, or slightly older instruments anymore - they're only interested in selling you a new instrument at an outrageous price targeted at GOV budgets - SAD - the old HP / Agilent way is definitely no more
WOW, a $8500 scope as a gift! You are certainly doing something right! I think even the guy on "signal path" would go wow on this! When you get a chance show the low level signal capability. I have a Keysight DSOX1202 that I paid full price for (2 grand!) and am disappointed in the performance of in low level signal measurement. (10mv to 100mv) Being an 8 bit scope it is horribly choppy. Apparently the low level signal range is simply digitally magnified rather than re-scaling the A:D to put the full 256 levels for full scale on the range. I'm trying to find someone to unload this thing on but no suckers so far. Rigol, here I come!
I’d be enraged at the cheap vac-formed plastic for such an expensive device. Presumably commercial labs are buying most of these, and they have been doing this for long enough to see the results-they get _trashed_ and rather than occupy second-hand labs for 50-years like much of the older HP/Tek devices, they get melted for scrap.
@@silverXnoise yes, the lack of durability, or downright planned obsolescence, is a big nuisance nowadays. My lab runs on a 1986 built Tek 468, it works perfectly well to this day. 8:57 When you connected that USB to power the demo board, the noise level on the oscilloscope increased. In fact, this is nothing "abnormal", it's the reason to build a separate 5V/2A linear power supply with USB output just to power boards like this.

Correct. So many noobs have been told linear is outdated and to use switchers everywhere. Makes me cringe. Then they wonder why their op amp circuits are so noisy lol.
Man, those keysight scopes are so awesome. Looking at one of those is kind of like looking at a nice Ferrari. I want it, but I'll never be able to afford it.
You mentioned getting fingerprints on the touchscreen. Most recent touchscreens don't have to be touched with the meat of your finger. Try holding your finger downwards at a 45 degree angle and tap the screen lightly with your fingernail. I have used the touchscreen on my IC-7610 transceiver in this manner since purchasing it in 2018 and have cleaned the screen only a few times to remove dust. I never have smudges. Great review and an awesome gift! 73, de WG2E.
With 16 bit vert resolution you can perform an FFT of an audio signal, and get fairly accurate view of your harmonics, and even compute a THD! No need for a formal distortion analyzer!
Two things. First, at about the 9 minute mark you powered up the test board with the USB and CH1 (measuring the probe compensation) got much nosier - unexpected. Second, I work as an independent consultant and though I love the fact you get yours for free I would have to buy mine. In the future videos comparing the price value of different more affordable brands would be nice. For example Siglent SDS3000 or Rigol equivalent. What you desire and what you can afford and what is pragmatic does not add up. If HP has put restrictions on what you can video I understand - either way enjoy your new toy.
the usb noise is picked up by the long ground lead of the probe. not unexpected. as to what scope is right for you is difficult. I am not limited to what I can do or say. This is a very expensive scope. about $27k with all the options I received. If you need this performance then you are not worried about price. EEVBLOG compared it to the top of the line rhode and schwartz and it had 1/2 the noise. I don't have access to a bunch of scopes so can't do any comparisons. Most of my viewers only need a $300 Rigol or Siglent. If you need performance then you pay for it. If in your consulting you find you need the noise, bit depth. of this Keysight then you can bid the job right and buy it, or rent it, or ask the company to buy it and you get to use it for the duration of the consulting and return it.
Gee, for that price I should probably get 2 for stereo! :) If I had that on my bench I could verify that much of the rest of my gear was junk, so I think I'll pass. I'm still in the 'HP with just a bit of Agilent' equipment era.
Very nice addition to the bench! Lemme know if you can't find room for it! You might pick up some of those tablet/phone pokey stylus things with the conductive rubber end to substitute for your finger. As a bonus, maybe you could use the other end as a pointer in your videos? Of course, then it's just another thing loose on the bench to chase after.
👍 Keysight must love you, what an amazing gift 👏 🤔You won't accidentally sell your Rigol to make room on the table 😁 at a reasonable price, I would be interested - my Hantek has started to go to electronic heaven after ten years of work 😞 Nice day 🙂 Tom
