हिरण्याक्ष पृथ्वी को लेकर समुद्र में जाकर छिप गया। पृथ्वी को डूबता देख सभी देवी देवताओं ने भगवान विष्णु से प्रार्थना की कि -हे भगवन आप पृथ्वी को डूबने से बचा लीजिए। क्योंकि इस पर ही संपूर्ण मानव समाज को अपना जीवन बिताना है। अगर पृथ्वी नहीं होगी तो मानव सभ्यता नहीं बचेगी। इसलिए हे करुणानिधान दीनों पर कृपा कर पृथ्वी को बचाइए।

विष्णु जी ने वराह अवतार लेकर समुद्र में छुपे हिरण्याक्ष को ढूंढा। जब उससे पृथ्वी लेने लगे तो उसने युद्ध के लिए भगवान वराह को ललकारा । दैत्य हिरण्याक्ष की ललकार सुनकर भगवान विष्णु को क्रोध आया,भगवान वराह और दैत्य हिरण्याक्ष में भीषण युद्ध छिड़ा। जिसके बाद उन्होंने हिरण्याक्ष का वध कर दिया। भगवान वराह समुद्र से पृथ्वी को अपने दातों पर रखकर बाहर ले आए। उसके बाद भगवान वराह ने अपने खुरों से जल को स्तंभित कर उस
पृथ्वी की पुनर्स्थापना की। इसके पश्चात भगवान वराह अंतर्धान हो गए।
