This intro - the music, the style, the look, the setting, this is how a genuine martial artist lets Hollywood know who he is and how he does. He was a genuine bad ass.
Steven Seagal may be a punchline now but at the time, when this came out, the martial arts and the idea of aikido really blew a lot of us (me and my friends away). By mixing pictures of his real life with a narrative story, you really cared and made a connection. This opening REALLY worked and it was one of the best setups for a character I had seen at that time. Aikido was something I had never even heard of, let alone seen. At first glance, it looked like some kind of brutal form of judo. I was really hoping at the time he would become the.next Bruce Lee/Chuck Norris in terms of martial arts superstars. I still really like this movie, along with the first Under Siege.
Too me I have respect for all these guys Bruce Chuck Seagal they're realistic martial arts but don't know who wins in a fight they never fought but as technic wise seagal is better the skill level
They're all different seagal has 8th dan in karate as well black belts in judo his well rounded if you look at Chuck and Bruce they're mixed to with lots of styles these guys had realistic martial arts skills

My opinion: This intro is legendary, because it have the spiritual, energetical and philosophical emission in it, that gives a little glimpse in the original direction. (The "original" direction is not modern aikido. It means the ROOTS of modern Aikido. Simply: The War tactics, methods and philosophical principles of the old samurai arts.)
This scene alone inspired me to take up Aikido in 1994, as a 16 year old high school student. That was 27 years ago. Although I'm now 4th Dan and teaching my own students, I believe I'm still a beginner in Aikido and have much to learn. Thank you Seagal Sensei.
same here. started with Shihan Ralph Reynolds in B'Ham. he was magical. my recently deceased friend Donovan Waite Sensei had just gotten his black belt at the time. he himself became a legend in his own right. then i trained with jack arnold shihan in LA and later Chiba Sensei. They are sadly all gone now. never met Seagull but have mutual contacts from both Aikido and the film industry. Noone thinks very highly of him apparently...

The soundtrack to this movie and Bloodsport were some of the best movie soundtracks ever in hindsight. I can hear two notes and immediately picture the movie and scene it’s from still all these years later.
I still have fond memories of when I first watched that this film, especially with that legendary introductory scene. At the time that it was first shown, there was nothing else out there like it. Superb!

One of my favorite films - 'War is still the greatest business, huh Nelson?' Amazing story telling, music, martial arts, and despite what people say - Steven Seagal was a beast. Low budget, and unheard of - making good movies.
Only his first three or four films were good. When his career took a nose-dive he's only produced shit. And he's still doing it to this day. Now I'd only watch one of his later films to see just how bad it is. They're all the same formula, and Seagal is always untouchable in them. When you hear the stories of what an ass he was on set, and the multiple reports of sexual harrassment against multiple women, it becomes clear Seagal is not a very nice person. Singularly driven and consumed entirely by his own ego. If the allegations against him were not true - he would have gone to court to clear his name. Instead, he's given out pay offs and settled out of court. Big red flag.

I always liked this intro when I was a teenager. I was passionately into martial arts at the time. I trained mainly in karate and tae kwon do, but I occasionally trained in jujitsu whenever someone who knew it visited my class or I went to a seminar. I always wanted to take up aikido. I know a lot of people claim it's an ineffective art, but almost every martial art has critics who claim it is "useless." In any sense, there wasn't an aikido school anywhere near me at the time, so I never studied it.
The best i had it on cassette watch on VCR in the 90s. It brings back memories of my dad we used sit down and watch a lot of movies especially karate movies Steven segal and Vann Dame was is favorites

This is how Seagal became a legend to Warner Bros action films in da late 80's through Exit Wounds which was his last film from the beloved studio. This movie came out after I debut in the world but watching this in da 90's was great along with his other action classics that came on HBO.
This exact same demonstration with Matsuoka was the one he used to con Warner Brothers into thinking he was some kind of actual fighter, with actual fighting abilities.

I watched ‘above the law’. I have 1 question. In the movie Nico told the cop that arrested the drug dealer (and set him free again) that he saw the nurse lady that planted the bomb together with Salvano’s lawyer. His lawyer was bald and I haven’t seen them together in the entire movie.
Today we make fun of him for how much weight he's gained & his movies went from Good story to Bad & from Theaters to Direct to Video but let's be honest... When we were young and fit in our prime, we still couldn't have touched Steven Seagal when he was between the age of 20 through 46. unless we had a gun. I tried Akido, until they forbade certain escapes I learned in Judo. A martial art that teaches you to lose is frippery.

I know a lot of people claim it's an ineffective art, but almost every martial art has critics who claim it is "useless." In any sense, there wasn't an aikido school anywhere near me at the time, so I never studied it.
I can't describe how completely badass this opening scene looked in VHS tape version :)
The best i had it on cassette watch on VCR in the 90s. It brings back memories of my dad we used sit down and watch a lot of movies especially karate movies Steven segal and Vann Dame was is favorites

When Steven Seagals name started circulating in the martial arts community in the early 1980s because of his fight choreography skills for the movie "THE CHALLENGE"... He was bound to be a star, he was extremely popular as a martial arts teacher in Japan, one of the most sought-out teachers in Aikido... Regardless how it turned out today, when he was younger he was a force to recon with as a Martial Artist, fight choreographer, and later on Actor

Not alot of martial arts in the movie, but this goes down as one of my most favorite.
With this film, Shihan Seagal introduced Aikido, a Japanese martial art, to the world. This is a great achievement.

This is how Seagal became a legend to Warner Bros action films in da late 80's through Exit Wounds which was his last film from the beloved studio. This movie came out after I debut in the world but watching this in da 90's was great along with his other action classics that came on HBO.

Seagal in his prime was a phenomenal movie start. Looked the part and had a certain magnetism to him. Fantastic scene.
This exact same demonstration with Matsuoka was the one he used to con Warner Brothers into thinking he was some kind of actual fighter, with actual fighting abilities.

MeganTHEEEEEE GREATEST movie opening ever!!! It really encapsulated & defined his perceived mystique (speaking fluent Japanese was such a flex too). Unfortunately, over the last few years he's completely shattered that mystique & aura & has become a caricature of himself
This was so fresh and exciting after watching JCVD and Chuck Norris movies for years. Steven Seagal's Aikido, in his early movies, inspired thousands to take up the Art. But Aikido purists around the World hated the way he portrayed O'Sensei's Aikido as so violent. Not real Aikido at all...

Sensei Seagal is a Great man.
Aikido is still one of the most sophisticated and under-rated martial arts, today... Seagal practiced it on a very combative/ martial level that was poorly understood by the masses.

I watched ‘above the law’. I have 1 question. In the movie Nico told the cop that arrested the drug dealer (and set him free again) that he saw the nurse lady that planted the bomb together with Salvano’s lawyer. His lawyer was bald and I haven’t seen them together in the entire movie.
