  • Rod Stewart In the Studio performing the 'Demo' of the Hit Single 'Maggie May'. Making up the words as he goes along, the words that Rod sings bear no resemblance and are completely unrecognisable to ones in the eventual No.1 Hit. The title and word 'Maggie' does not get mentioned anywhere in the song. The backing track is still in it's early Mix stages also. Rod's lyrics get interesting about 2 minutes in to the song. I've also added the subtitles of the words. Regardless of this Demo, the record is still a timeless 'Classic'.

It was in Morgan sound studio in Willesden in 1971. Now closed converted to an estate agents. This is just after Ray Jackson of Lindisfarne, put in the mandolin. They had laid down on tape the beginning and end of an album filling song, that was not certain be on the album. They asked Ray to link it all together, leaving it to him. The mandolin is played all through. Ray thought it best to have a mandolin solo. Stuart, producer and engineers were delighted with the results giving Ray the thumbs up from the control room. Ray was paid £15 for his efforts.
The drum bass pedal broke being put in after by hitting the drum by hand. It is easy to spot when you listen. This was to get Rod used to the near finished musical track before he puts in the vocals. He decided to sing along with it.
Co-writer Quitterton did not particularly like the recording. He was amazed it had been released as a single and only knew when passing a pub and hearing it on the jukebox through the opened door.

Ty for the story. I've never heard this before. I have been listening to rod since I was in the womb. Yesterday was my dad's 14 th be since he passed. He barely made it to 60. Maggie may was one if not his favorite.

Dreadful that Ray Jackson was only paid £15 and never received royalties for his part in this. An injustice. Has tarnished Rod Stewart's image ever since for me. And Martin Quittenton was unappreciated! Sad history. Would just love to be able to roll up at his place with a beer or a bottle of wine & tell him what a fantastic job he did.

Interesting to hear the creative process an artist takes to reach the final product and the different musical mixes. Demos, alternate takes, unreleased screw-up.....almost like being a fly on the wall
