Hi Linda! Thank you. I just added gears to this whirligig, but I'm thinking the action was better without the gears beacause it was faster. This is a fun whirligig for sure. I just made a video where he is all painted. Thanks for stopping by. Warm greetings from Wishram.

@@ToddAndrewCole Thanks for the warm greeting! This sounds like the engine of a former car of mine..when the fuel ratio was set exact it seemed to slow the flow of my car...because of the shifting, I guess...but with a half turn richer on the fuel🙂it ran so much smoother from shift to shift. It seems like your gizmo should run quicker with a gear. I guess it depends on how you use it.

@@lindakleckner215 Sounds like the old MG Midget I used to own. I could make the hiker go faster with gears, but I used them to slow things down. I think I prefer the faster movement, but the slower movement will last much longer. Take care.

There seems to be a critical ratio of the distance between the direct drive and the up/down lever. I had to go through several iterations to get the exact(ish) distance that allows the up/down lever from arcing down or up too far and stalling the driver.

Ah, the joys of whirligig making! It takes a bit of tinkering to get things to work right, but the problem solving is good exercise for the brain if you can keep from getting frustrated and just enjoy the ride. I'm sure there's some math involved in getting the right ratio, but I never took geometry, so I use trial and error.
