  • What are the ingredients of a perfect climb? The location or the people you are with? Or is it the weather? Or perhaps the chance to make history? Veteran climber Mick Fowler takes us along on his journey through "one of the most enjoyable climbs" he has ever done - his 2012 Piolet d'Or winning climb of Shiva (6,142m) in the Pangi valley in Himachal Pradesh, a long held objective of his, along with his regular climbing partner Paul Ramsden. This was first climb of this challenging mountain by its northeast ridge, which Mick and Paul named as the Prow of Shiva.
Mick Fowler has been climbing in the higher ranges since 1982, with several First Ascents to his credit in Nepal, Russia, Yukon, Tibet, Xinjiang, Sichuan, Pakistan, Peru and India. He has undertaken 10 notable expeditions in the Indian Himalaya. Mick has served as the President of the UK Alpine Club. He is a three-time Piolet D'Or winner and has published two volumes of memoirs, for which he won the Jon Whyte Award for Mountain Literature at the 2005 Banff Mountain Book Festival and the best book prize at the Bormio Mountain Festival in 2012.

Marvelous climb to the summit ! Truly inspiring. Like the fact that the team used natural features of the mountain and did the actual climbing. Lovely !

Incredible and wonder why Mick calls this nerve jerking climb as one of the most enjoyable nor why he has named this peak as Prow,as it does not resemble front of a ship. The broken glacial is worse than the Khumbu and saddling way up is akin to climb on Satopanth. Camping on higher reaches of the peak, all hooked up even while sleeping in a tent or even for morn 'duties' is like the terrain on the Neelkanth.
Pleasure listening to a down to earth but most accomplished modern day climber.

Interesting point on climbing ethics and what a climb! Simply Brilliant! The ridge walk down the south side looks incredible and so does that glacier which you crossed three times, phew! 😲

Thank you very much #MickFowler for sharing the memorable moments of your climbing to the Shiva Peak of Pangi Valley. I have always been interested in knowing a deeper insight into this peak since it's a very sacred place for Pangwals, the people of Pangi valley. I feel blessed and fortunate to see the detailed closer view of Shiva peak and you beautifully named it "Prow of Shiva". Salute to your victorious climbing and visiting the valley... Thanks a lot.

An excellent climb by one of the world's top climbers. Suggest the IMF should order his two-volume memoirs for the library.

I saw this mountain from a flight and sought to find which one it is, and now I'm here listening to an amazing narration about the epic climb of a very difficult route. Such a beautiful pointy peak. Marvellous.
