- The Quran holds an unparalleled status in Islam, derived from its position as the literal word of God (Allah) and the final revelation to humankind. This status is clearly established within the Quran itself and reinforced by the teachings and traditions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as recorded in Hadith.
Quranic Perspective
Divine Origin: The Quran repeatedly emphasizes its divine origin, stating that it is a revelation from Allah. For instance, in Surah Al-Isra (17:88), Allah challenges: "Say, 'If mankind and the jinn gathered in order to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like of it, even if they were to each other assistants.'"
Guidance and Mercy: The Quran describes itself as a guide for humanity, a source of wisdom, and a mercy for believers. Surah Al-Baqarah (2:185) states: "The month of Ramadan [is that in which] the Qur'an was revealed, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and the criterion."
Preservation: Allah has guaranteed the preservation of the Quran from any alteration or corruption. Surah Al-Hijr (15:9) states: "Indeed, it is We who have sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian."
Hadith Perspective
Superiority of the Quran: Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the superiority of the Quran over all other forms of speech and knowledge. He said, "The superiority of the speech of Allah over the speech of others is like the superiority of Allah over His creation."
Importance of Recitation and Study: The Prophet (peace be upon him) encouraged the recitation, study, and teaching of the Quran, highlighting the rewards and blessings associated with it. He said, "The best of you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it."
Intercession: The Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned that the Quran will intercede for its reciters on the Day of Judgment. He said, "The Qur'an is an intercessor, and its intercession is accepted. Whoever makes it his leader, it will lead him to Paradise, and whoever puts it behind him, it will drag him to the Fire."
Conclusion
The Quran's status as the literal word of God, its role as a guide for humanity, and its guaranteed preservation are fundamental tenets of Islam. The teachings and traditions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) further emphasize the importance of the Quran in the lives of Muslims, encouraging its recitation, study, and implementation in all aspects of life.
