Ok, so I understand the bolts with the coil wrapped round is an electromagnet like a solenoid which pushed metal away from the top. But how do you get it to drop back down and bounce without a circuit constantly turning the power on off on off on off?
Ah as I understand it I think you got it backwards. It's not that the electromagnet is 'pushing' it's 'atracting' the bolt. As long as the bolt is touching the upper nail the circuit is complete thus the electromagnet turns on attracting the bolt towards it, that however separates it from the nail and breaks the circuit turning off the magnet so it bounces right back up and reconnects the circuit once again powering the magnet and beginning the circle all over again.
That is what creates the up and down motion of the needle.
Good exercise to show how Its working. But I would love to see the expression in my clients face if I pulled out that "machine" when I start tattooing them 😂

why a rotary setup? there is nothing wrong with coil machines
I like rotarys but what I find and this is wierd... I can do line work with a rotary... but I just love coils the shading especially far more phenomenal I sont know what it is I just prefer coils over rotary but I do like rotary. My first kit was a coil I brought of some guy who tats himself up.. my second was a rotary my mate help me pick it us hes done tattoos and cover ups on people before so I went to him for help, but he prefers rotarys over coils just cause they light and shit which they are I do like that.. but i prefer coils they just got that feel....

There's not enough power to make a lasting tattoo, please dont try this. as you can see the orange didnt hold any ink and if the orange cant then the machine would only scratch and/or damage your skin. The tattoo would only be some light dots on your skin and would dissapear quick. Just go to a proffesional or at least buy a good kit from for example killer ink.

or even just make a prison tattoo gun out of an electric razer or tooth brush just make sure that it does in fact work and doesn't have the depth of the needle set too high or low and if you use homemade or prison ink don't use anything that could poison you. if you use a pencil make sure it's a number 2 and make sure the needle is clean before you use it. hell even plucking/stick and poke would work better then the one tattoo gun in the video.

Lets Make it this isn’t smart in any way. this thing is stupid and it doesn’t work at all. someone is going to be dumb and do this and hurt themselves. It doesn’t tattoo. for the amount of ink it somewhat leaves on your skin it’ll go away way faster. all in all this thing is dumb and people shouldn’t think about doing this

i think its better to use motor rather than this if you want to tattoo yourself.
The science is fine the majority of tattoo machines work this way (referred to as coil machines) rotary machines (machines with an engine) are a relatively new thing. But you'd be better hand poking a tattoo than carve a piece in with this machine.

but stick and poke is longer cause you have to take the needle and jab yourself with it, vs a motor one does it for you which makes the process go faster and easier
Yes but in some cases between differnt stick and poke techniques the color differnce is there for example in some tattoo traditions I believe in chines tradition I may be wrong but I have watched a video where green did become more lighter using the well in most cases stick and pone then using your standard gun which made the color more dark and dense..

Why dont you buy proper enameled copper wire for coils (electromagnets) and proper tattoo machine springs, etc. You could make much better machines. You can buy all the things necessary to make pro tattoo machine from ebay and hardware stores.

Well tattoo machine is not exactly high tech. It is possible to build pro tattoo machines just using simple tools. Of course it is easy to just buy one, but if one wants to make one, why not.

Way to big and flimsy to do any real work requiring shading and what not. But that being said this was a really good video on showing what the concept of a coil type machine alot of people think you can only make a homemade machine with rotary motor and then they end scarring someone uo using it cause it moves so fast and has no give. This is a good way to show someone what they need and they can come up with there own ideas and use the proper enamel coated coil wire. But props on yhe good video.

Aye very good, but I'd love to see you carve a tattoo into a real person. Because that orange looked brutalised so I'd hate to see the mess you'd make of skin. Plus that's got to be one of the most unwieldy awkward machines to hold.
