He was a serious title contender in 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1993. That's 10 seasons of winning or almost winning the title. Incredible consistency. Keep in mind he started his career in 1980.

Even at the later stages of his career, in 2009, he was faster than Button in the 2nd half of the season, but Button had already made his lead, and the car wasn't as good compared to other as in the 1st part.

Then Lauda crashed in Canada while leading which allowed Fittipaldi to draw level with Regazzoni for the last race (and he won the title by 3 points). Talk about self-destructing...
