you mention the stock speed sensor, is yours 3 wire or 2 wire? my TY52 has the 2 wire sensor...unsure if I need to use a 3 wire to provide power to the sensor.... (As I understand the 2 wire sensor powered my 98 subaru donor dash speedo and from there the the dash sent the signal to the ECU)

If i use Subaru engine with gear box, i wouldn't need the engine adapter, right? ..only the transmission converter?

...U have done lots for your age, so congrats-n U R a good mechanic the least.
This mod drive gear kit, I was looking for my thought process for a Suby tranny app.-so thanx.
If your tires are the same diam. as the donor tranny car, U can claim that U have a good reading speed from your ECM/OBD reader.
Perhaps, U can install also a Suby suspension so U can get a couple inch wider track.
U have a good Narration of the conversion story, so keep it up.
I had my Air cooled VWs -b4 U were born- but now I keep up with my favorite flat engine design with my 2 older Subies I like much.
..some young U tuber, toured the country with his dog, in an older Suby OB, n it was nice.
...when I realized that the Vanagons -which I like much- were fading the US market, I wrote a letter to the VW Engineering section, telling them that in order for the Vanagon to survive in the US Market, it needs a good 3 ltr engine with an Auto tranny. Their response was that they cater to the majority of the World Market !
NO retro product, will resemble the Vanagon without the engine in the back. tho, an electric retro can resemble the Vanagon.

      You can get it here:
      www.subarugears.com/index.html
Before you buy, you need to have the Subaru transmission first. There are different parts depending on what year your transmission is. I recommend finding the newest transmission you can get. The newer transmission gets you more modern upgrades, and possibly less mileage.

Nice build! Wonder if you could run a driveshaft up to the front diff of a Syncro?

    • @e-curb

It might work. The front diff's R&P must match what's in the transmission for the rear diff.

Tengo el mismo pensamiento , creo que es la solución un cambio Subaru tipo forester con reductora y colocar diferencial de deslizamiento para no perder el bloqueo trasero y se efectivo en carretera

Hey Vanagon guru! Awesome videos man! ..and great results! Inspiring stuff!
(got some questions that i hope you can help me with)
...soo, i got an rusty ol '88 Vanagon 1.9, that im currently restoring.. Next to it, i have a 2004 Subaru Forester with a EJ20 engine (milage, about 170k miles). Is there any conversion kits for this engine? I could only find for the 2.2l and up.
Do you recommend to use both engine and gearbox right away?
Right now im on a tight budget, what's the minimal amount of stuff i need to buy to get it working in my Vanagon?
Do you use the original Vanagon radiator btw?
Learning by doing all the way here, so i appreciate any support.
    Thanks!

    • @krisphoton7304
      @krisphoton7304 2 года назад

hi Loner...U do the swap/transplant for a more powerful engine, so 2.5 ltr is your engine.
Get a Suby wreck in your yard for under 1k$ n swap the most. The crown/pinion gear set for 4k$, is very expensive, but for now U could get away with a taller tire in de drive wheels. Get also the "fly by wire" gas pedal-NO linkage- from the Suby.
the VW tranny gives ~4K rpm/60 mph. =noisy.
      Good luck

I am thinking of doing this mod to my 89 Wolfsburg edition. How much $$ did you spend on the whole project, engine and trans? I am trying to figure out a budget for this project. I am a retired aircraft mechanic, so I’ll be doing all of the work. How’s your road trip going? Impressed that you did this build and then went on a long cross country mission. That’s awesome!

(edit: never mind the question, reading trough the other comments, I see you've already answered it many times haha)
You say that the transaxle is too long in AWD configuration. By that, do you mean it will not fit the vanagon ftame? I ask because I was hoping to use this kit to do a Subaru conversion in a Synchro vanagon.
BTW, thanks for your videos, they are helpful for planning this conversion job a customer asked me to do.

    • @PostPros
      @PostPros  3 года назад +1

Look on subarugears website and they have an awd version you can build. Also can get r&p to match syncro front diff so you can leave that stock if you want to⚙️⚙️🤙
But yes the trans hits the frame if you leave the Subaru center diff.

LSD of both types is awesome! LOL. Open diffs really suck, and the proper ratio LSD can really transform the way the vehicle drives, with the handling and power delivery, especially on cornering. You made the right choice with the Quaife. Between those guys, Peloquin, and OS Giken, they are the best in the game. The sight glass in the trans is f'n cool. Great solution/ idea. Really cool to see someone take the time and the effort to do this build the right way. Nice looking fab work for sure dood!! Stay safe, and keep it real!! 😎🌲💪👍
