Real answer: how many can you afford?

We purchased 150 points at Disney’s Beach Club Villas back in 2002 and we still have not added to it. We have stayed at every resort on property except Rivera and we’ve also stayed at Hilton Head Island Resort. We have no complaints and have not had a real urge to add on yet. For the 150 points we have stayed for a week at AKL, BLT, DBCV, DBV, SSV, DWLV, and OKW. All were one bedroom except for OKW, which was a two bedroom. We have also stayed in a two bedroom at GFV for four days followed by 5 days at DBV in a one bedroom (but that was a banked year, current, and a borrowed year).
It has been a great investment with nearly 20 years left on the original contract. Since we plan to retire in Orlando (or the surrounding area), probably no going to add on and will use for out of town guests or weekend getaways.

I can say I'm partial to the one-bedrooms; being able to make your own meals is a HUGE savings at Disney.

Buy what you can afford. Next choose where. We only have 75 AKL but I couldn’t afford more. It allows me to get my foot in the door. We went in knowing we will likely add on.

Such a fun show!! Addonitis is real!! We bought Old Key West direct points back in the 90's. Added Vero Beach, Beach Club, and Saratoga over the years. Sold all but Saratoga when the kids grew older, and just now adding 🎉 a Saratoga Resale Contract 🎉 through DVC Resale Market to take the grandkids more often. It's been a lifelong adventure, and it's been so worth it!!

When I saw DVC in 1994, I computed points based on a 3 bedroom grand villa, every 2.5 years for October, based on my family size then. Over the years, my family has changed. I have married, gained bonus children with my new husband, added children-in-law, now grandchildren. I need more points.

I purchased my first contract back in May 2021. By February 2022 I had succom to addonitis. A few months ago, I realized I was not booking more than 1 trip to WDW for the next couple of years, so reached out to Derek at DVC Resale Market and my old contract sold within 24 hours. It was the most seemless and stress free process I could have hoped for and I feel that I now have the perfect amount of points for me and my DH.

I enjoyed the stream today. The concept of buying where you want to stay was not an option when I purchased Saratoga Springs in 2006. I love Saratoga and I have also added on two 50 point contracts (direct) Animal Kingdom and grand Floridian. I come down 3 times a year.

I bought resale during the start of rhe pandemic. 300 points at CCV which we absolutely love. Had addonitis within a year. Added 230 at Aulani, our favorite resort so far. I still look but I have definitely curbed my enthusiasm after seeing how the parks and pricing has gotten out of control. I would be happiest using all of my points at Aulani. And after 4 trips to Hawaii we will have our contract value there 'paid for.' 🍍🌺

I have 75 points at AKL. For just me, and sometimes my partner, although he doesn't love Disney as much as I do, it's the perfect amount to go on two or three 4-5 night trips each year in a deluxe studio. I'm going to Boardwalk for three nights in June and we're doing a week in a Savannah-view studio at the end of October. I plan to add more direct points later on, but a small contract is perfect for right now.

I got my first dvc AKL resale during the great recession era. Got it for a steal.
Then added on a small resale contract at beach club and then a resale contract at Polynesian. My final add on will be about 300 points at copper creek to use for a family trip so we can do a cabin every three years.
I now rent the AKL through the dvc rental store and the $ covers the dues for all 3 I own. And, I am grandfathered in for all the perks.

I can afford a huge amount of (credits) points. I have 5 more years to pay off my house in Santa Clara, California. I choose to currently use my WorldMark Timeshare to exchange in to DVC. I also use Bonus Time to book reservations. When I use up my Credits (Points). What is Bonus Time? When a WorldMark owner cancels their vacation at the very last moment. That reservation goes back in to the system for availability. Another WorldMark owner can than pay cash for that reservation. For a very big discount. After paying off my house in 5 years. That is when I may decide to purchase more Credits (Points). I do have my priorities.

we started with 50 at SSR because that's what we could afford, two years ago. Then this April I put an offer in on 400 pts at VB, we declined a counter offer; so I put an offer in on another 150 pts at SSR. We are currently in the process of buying that (waiting on the final contract) and then we were contacted by the broker of the VB 400 pts and we accepted their counter offer and now we are in the process of buying those also. We'll have a total of 600 pts between the two locations. Very excited!

I LOVE Port Orleans Riverside! One of my favorites. Don't know why. It just is. However, I've always wanted to try French Quarter, Boardwalk Inn, and Beach Club. Grand Floridian ofc has my interest peaked only because Mad Hatter is there and I've always wanted to meet Mad Hatter. I will sit around the tea cups PRAYING he shows up for like and hour. My goal is to take a Disney trip once a year and visit every park around the world at least once.

When is the best time to buy DVC and when is the best time to plant a tree? Both questions have the same answer: YESTERDAY! Don’t wait. As for how many points should you buy? Purchase what you can comfortably afford. No matter the number of points you buy, DVC will SIGNIFICANTLY upgrade your vacation experience. And if at some time in your future you need to cash out, you can. You can rent out your points to someone else in exchange for cash while retaining ownership of your DVC contract -or- you can sell your contract if your needs change. We bought DVC 15 years ago and our DVC purchase was one of the best things we ever did. In our case, after 3 vacations it had MORE than paid for itself. We have 15 years of unforgettable memories as a couple, as a family, as well as several vacations with invited relatives. Buy what you can comfortably afford.

We kept our 160 Aulani but felt best to sell our 400 AKL. After we retired we wanted to be able to start taking our large family ( 10 grown kids and 13 grandkids) but after a few trips to WDW some of our children were one and done. We might be financially in a better place but I didn’t consider that my children are raising a family in California which isn’t easy.

i would also be curious as to how many are a mix of resale and direct. My first resort was Grand Cal. in 2012. Had to go resale because, at the time, Disney wouldnt even put you on the waiting list. My second was Poly which I bought directbecause my daughter was in the college program and we got to use her cast discount. Third contract was back to resale because it was for Beach Club and again, at the time, you couldnt even get on the waiting list. Then it was back to direct at VDH. So knowing where you want to stay will sometimes determine whether you go resale or not. I was ROFR'd twice before my first VGC contract went through. The unsuccessful attempts were for 150 and 175 points. My successful purchase was for 200 pts. I have been eternally grateful for those extra points although i originally was looking for 150-175 pt contract.

They didn't touch on my first advice, which is... "When will you travel?"
Whether or not you know your preferred resort, buyers should know that travel in peak season is over 2x more points than the lowest season.
Right away, a potential buyer knows they need to consider a large bulk of points to travel in peak season. After that, you scale their resort/room expectations to their budget.

The Grand Floridian resort studios are larger than the deluxe studios. The resort studios are about 440 square feet compared to the deluxe studios which are 374 square feet. Just an FYI for listeners. I agree that otherwise they are making point charts more expensive with new resorts.
