It's crazy that Indian brands don't cater to anything below light beige when the majority of the country is medium or dark-skinned. It's international brands that are tapping into this market more than homegrown ones.
Priya K exactly!!
Exactly! I always thought the only reason I am not getting my shade is because I am living abroad! :(
This is why India remains a third world country...Our citizens would rather buy foreign products then incest in our own. Why can't homegrown Indian brands have the makeup you need, we literally can't make makeup for ourselves apparently we need the French and the Americans to make our makeup for us....
Debo Datta if the homegrown brands don’t cater to their own market then consumers will inevitably go elsewhere. It’s the company’s responsibility to make their brand accessible to their own market.
They need to market it also. Maximum customers also want lighter foundation

"Shop ki lighting mast thi" MOOD
As a MUA, thought I'd share some tips no body asked for: 1. Never buy foundation online specially if you don't have alot of knowledge about your skin undertones and makeup in general. 2. Never swatch it on your arm at the store, swatch it on your jaw and neck. 3. Store lighting is extremely deceiving, walk outside the mall and look at yourself in natural day light. 4. You can (should) set your foundation with setting powder so it doesn't melt off your face. Other than that, completely agree with the lack of shade range in alot of Indian brands and the availability in stores.
It's feels so refreshing to see girls and women not fall under pressures of being fair skinned and it's time cosmetics companies made products to suit our skin shades rather than force us to wear what they make and want us to wear!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍
Kewal Patil Exactly! This hopefully urges brands like Lakmé to be more inclusive with their shade range.

Y’all need to try fenty beauty foundation because Rihanna launched 40+ shades
EDIT: sorry guys, I didn’t know that it was not easily accessible in India 😔 I’m in Canada and it’s quite easily accessible here and is actually cost friendly, in comparison to comparable luxury brands such as Lancôme, Estée Lauder, etc. The price of one here is approx $35 and it lasts a while. Although I do agree, it’s not the best for dry skin as the foundation dries down matte. I’m oily skin type so it works for me and I still powder after.
Hopefully one day Sephora stores in India will be able to provide the same products that they do in the North American ones, that way we can all have access to amazing products 🙂

its interesting when aranya mentioned the women at makeup counters suggest lighter shades for her foundation choices. here in america, a lot of the clerks suggest shades that are quite orange for my skin. most indian skin has a golden neutral vibe to it, but until recently, very few brands carried that option. especially if you're in that "too dark for tan but not quite dark enough to be deep" category.
Or just don't buy a foundation. save money. drink plenty of water and slay it!!!!

you can't treat pigmentation by drinking water....I wish everything was that easy.

Tip: Gals Just save money and buy a foundation from a bigger brand like MAC, Nars, Bobbi Brown, Estée Lauder they actually have a wider shade range which also caters to Indian skin tones. They maybe high on the wallet but atleast it will match our skin tone.
And I guess the sales person do recommend us a lighter tone foundation because the foundation does tend to get darker once we have applied it on our face.
Not only will it match you better/perfectly it will also last longer performance wise and product wise because high-end luxery brands provide you with a higher pigmented complexion product.
There are some winners at all price points but I agree they're hard to find. One other trick is to buy high-pigment products because they are going to go so much further than regular foundations, which usually only have 15-30% pigment. RCMA foundation, for example, has 50% pigment. Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer is another super high-pigment one that I use. You literally use under a rice grain amount for a full face application. Pro MUA products like Cinema Secrets, Graftobian, etc. are in the same boat. They last forever. The one regular product I use is, like you suggest, a high end one - Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk. I use only a few drops and get great results. Shade adjusters are the best way to get the perfect match - I personally use Temptu and RCMA adjusters - so worth the investment in good products.

I've been there. The whole process of going to the store, getting what you think is the perfect shade for you and then coming home and trying it on and getting disappointed.
Why is it so hard to just get what you're looking for? Make-up brands need to step up if they want long term customers.
I think you can buy a foundation online only when you are buying it for the second time after you have perfectly matched it first time buying from a showroom. 🤔
The thing about foundation is, the colour they give you is the colour of your neck, so that it matches the body, cuz the face is usually darker than the body and if you apply the exact face shade, your face and body will be different colours and that doesnt look good with any outfits where the arms show. And the greyness, you have colour correctors for that.
I live abroad and as a theatre kid who does theatre performances, OMG I CAN RELATE TO THIS ON SOOOO MANY LEVELS. This one time I was the only person who never got to wear foundation for one my performances because they didn't have the right shade.
My face legit is 3 shades darker than my neck, no chance of doing a good blending job.
Scrub tone moisturizer. On regular. Tone everyday. Then you get an even tone. Masking is imp for brown girls to stay on a single tone. So you get a set shade that will blend in and oxidize just right.
@@poornimavijaykumar1925 Most of us will never be a single tone... You can tone, scrub, microderm, skin needle, use umpteen serums from retinol to aha and bha, use every form of mask and sunscreen every day...For many folks it won't even out completely. And the truth is I wouldn't want it to - my pigmentation is like natural bronzer that adds dimension. Hyperpigmentation in darker skin tones is very common and isn't going to be resolved with topical treatments. The trick is to work with it and use different shades and adjusters.
@@kishlette1809 love I'm as brown as they come. Southern Indian brown. I never said doing a skin care routine as many women around the world do it is to become lighter. Skin care is to have an even skin tone. Tone dsnt just mean color but texture reduced pore line... Etc but if women any which ever color (let me specific) still wanna look like babadook can go ahead applying one shade they bought 6 months ago. Your right about adjusters but most Desi woman won't shell out nearly 2grand every time they have to adjust a shade. I just started my 30s brown or not we all age. That's when you need more of a routine to have a face to put make up on
Don't worry, that's perfectly normal. Many people have multiple shades on their face not to mention their neck and body. My advice is to learn about colour correctors to avoid ashiness as you apply makeup and work with your skin tone.

So true. It's so hard to find darker shade foundation and the once that have the darker shade range are wayyy too expensive.
For us melanin rich skintones, the neck will always be darker than the face while the chest fairer. So the best way to match is to apply the chest matching foundation/concealer at the middle part of the face where the yellow highlight powder goes and go with a deeper/neck matching shade on the periphery where the bronzer goes. This seems to be the ONLY way where you can match both neck and the chest for us darker girls. :/

Next problem: finish?
Next problem: allergenic/acnegenic/comedogenic?
Next problem: oxidizing?
Next problem: Summer shade winter shade?
Next problem: cruelty free? Vegan?
Next problem: Price?

The struggle is so real. And the guilt you feel coz your money got wasted on the shade which doesn't even match your skin tone. That shit hurts.😑😑

This is just so sad 😓
Lemme quote Beyonce cause she’s queen and this song makes me feel so precious: “Brown skin girl, your skin just like pearls. The best thing in the world. I never trade you for anybody else”♥️♥️🤎🤎
Yess !! Bey is a queen
The struggle is real! Being of mixed heritage I have brown undertones but pink skin. Trying to match foundation is a nightmare, because if I match my skin color, I tend to look washed out and gray. Trying to match undertone is challenging because I have to go with foundation that looks like it’s going to be too dark. I have learned to mix and match and like to use stick foundations because they are easy to blend. I have been using Clinique stick foundations for some time and I like them, but I did not know Bobby Brown had stick foundation, have to check that out.
You could also use shade adjusters. I use Temptu adjusters for liquid foundations and RCMA adjusters for creams. I also use 2-3 shades to create dimension to the face...
Oh, Hourglass have a stick foundation now - I actually prefer it to Bobbi Brown's...I like the finish just a little more...
Try Mac, fenti beauty, make up for ever, nars (budget)
And who buys foundation online until already knows the shade
relatable!!! I love this. quick tip, if you find a foundation at Sephora (and this mostly only works at Sephora), ask the staff there for a sample of that foundation. They usually have these little tubs where there can give you a few pumps of the foundation for free (also works if you're in a pinch but your foundation has finished, just act like it's the first time you're trying that foundation out :D ). This way you can bring home the foundation, test it under regular lighting (not the bright store ones) and also test for oxidization (that's when your foundation dries down into a darker shade after some time), amongst other things like durability and how it feels after a long day.
And to the girl who said that she breaks out after a full face of makeup, I used to get that too, but I learned that it was because I wasn't really getting the makeup off even though I was removing it with wipes. So it's about the removal process more than the makeup itself (if I have a full face on, I usually double cleanse aka two face washes and then a toner but if your skin is sensitive you might wanna try gentler products).
That girl with bangs looks like Isha ambani!!👍
Tamil Desi from the states here! The way i got around this is honestly by spending money on high end makeup. Like i drop $ USD 30 on an everyday foundation and $ USD 70 on interview/special occasion makeup. Though most times now I just wear my $30 one for special occasions and everyday now just use concealer on my pigmentation. NYX concealer $USD 10 and NARS concealer $USD 30 both have my shade but i am luckily only medium brown. In the states, i tend to be the darkest shade or second darkest shade, until fenty literally outsold basically everyone and now US markets are starting to make darker shades sometimes and more accessible than before (see the backlash of what occurred to tarte). So yea drug store makeup is right out for me between shade issues and sensitive skin issues (but thatbis a different store entirely) . Like the only drug store brands i could possibly wear if they didnt make me breakout were loreal, covergirl and maybelline. Weirdly enough, i seem to have access to more range than you girls did... now i am shook that america has more shade range than india (which is surprising and sad)
I'm from Canada and I recently went to India. I needed to buy foundation and concealer but for some reason nothing in India works for Indians. Its usually chalky, dry and just not appealing.

Ugh, I’m an Indian-American girl and I appreciate how many shades are available to me now in 2019, including affordable drugstore choices. It’s unfair that the girls in india do not have access to affordable Indian brands like lakme because of lack of shades! So frustrating! No one wants to look ashy or orange. Gray face is the worst! Great foundation enhances your skin and makes it look healthy and even. I hope access to good makeup improves in india and that color matching is invested in!

I just loved this video and highly appreciate the effort these gorgeous girls are putting in dealing with the millions of problems we Indian girls face in our day to day lives.
The whole idea of using a foundation that we have grown up with in our great Indian society is to look “gori” even though rest of the body parts still look naturally darker. In my wedding I had the worst makeup of my life yet. My face and hands didn’t match. Well then I stopped using a foundation for a long time. I used only Lotus sunscreen products that had a foundation like texture after application. Only after moving to Germany I found the brand Manhattan which offered a wide range and economical prices. I use the Bronze 86 shade and it has never disappointed me.
I tan very easily and never loose my tan😶. I love how my tan is faithful to me, lmao
Thanks for this video! I was so disappointed that I stopped applying a foundation of any kind and I thought nobody has skin tone issues like me. I am so relieved after watching this.

The sales lady kept trying to sell me a foundation that were honestly very casket ready .. grey eleganza whatever you want to call it. Finally I pushed her into showing me the last shade in the range and it was close enough that I could finesse it but it did not match my undertones AT ALL so i bought it but now I have to mix it with other foundations so i dont waste it. But, watching this video made me at least happy that people are trying their best to speak out on it. Thank you Buzzfeed !
Wait why do drugstores in India have less foundation shades than drugstores in the UK!?
I'm kinda shocked that's all they could find wow.
crusty bobusty india is obsessed with fair skin, even darker women use lighter foundation in hopes of looking fairer
@@ucdp020 Yeah I know the obsession with fair skin is pretty pervasive in Asia in general.
But I didn't realise it was so accepted, that the market for darker skin is disregarded altogether.

Exactly it's the brand marketing, the problem is they sell all wheatish, American, European skin toned foundations to the warm Indian skin tones .Add to it the deceptive yellow lights in the mall. Honestly I have tried three brands and all of them just gave the same white chalky look on being blended. Indian foundation market really needs to evolve.
almost all foundations oxidize so its better to choose 1 shade lighter
I think in order to match your foundation shade it's really important to understand your undertone: warm/golden/olive, neutral, or cool It helps to match near your jaw so that you can blend down your neck if needed if your chest and face are different colors!
Mac, Fenty, Bobbi Brown, Maybelline's Fit Me line, Loreal's Tru match line, Makeup Forever, and Cover FX are some of the few brands with wide shade ranges that you should definitely check out. Even if the price point is high, it's worth your money because you will finally have a shade to match you and base makeup is good to invest in.
Another tip when finding the shade in store: after they pick a shade for you go outside in normal lighting so you can see if the shade is actually good! Store lighting is tricky, it makes everyone look good and it's unnatural, most people will be off if they match their. Hope this helps!! :)
9:03 to 9:26... LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK
Whenever you go to cosmetic stores, don't buy anything until they swatch on your face and you have seen what it looks like in natural light.
This reason alone is why I have them swatch what they think works, and then I walk outside and take pictures at different angles to check and see that it matches. After that I find the one that matches best and ask for a sample (if possible). That way, I can see how my combination skin interacts with it over the course of a normal work day. Once the sample container is empty do I go in and buy the product.
If you're shopping on-line, go to matchmymakeup.com. It really helps! Good luck!
So true. You have to wear it for a few hours to see if it oxidizes, look in natural light and go home and look in your own mirror... Even better to get a sample and use it at home yourself veggie vomiting to a while bottle. I wish I figured that out when I was 18!
3:58 most brands calls me ivory, vanilla, milkshake, marble. 😂😂 ...miserable at names maybe
A huge advice for ppl who love doing makeup- Find your undertone which are neutral, cool and warm. And always pick every makeup product from foundation to lipstick to blush according what's best for your undertone. This tip saved my life.
I love you guys so much, and tip for the brown girl gang, stay away from Lakme foundations. It's sad that as an Indian brand catering to an indian audience with an average of tanner skintones, they do not even match the medium toned girls. Horrible.
I have like a wheatish skin tone which is a little bit on the darker side and I remember using a Lakme foundation back when I didn't know any better... And God! It was awful... Turned me into a clown with a white face!
Superb video with thought-provoking message.
Literally all my body parts are of different colours SO HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO MATCH MY NECK AND MY FACE SHADE
I think Indian stores don't carry the entire shade range of certain brands. In Canada, I have no problems finding a shade dark enough for me at the drugstore...obviously some brands have crappy shade ranges but wet and wild, maybelline and loreal seem to have a lot more shades than others.
Even in Australia we have darker shades, I have the maybeline superstay and there are so many more daker colours here compared to India smh
Why don't the stores in India sell deeper shades when these brands actually have a lot more shades catering to medium, tan and deep skin?! I'm intrigued!! Affordable brands like Maybelline, L'Oreal and Nyx sell way more deeper shades in the US!
Cultural beauty ideals drive it. The prevalent view, unfortunately, is still that fair is preferable.
Just buy a lighter shade for dark foundation and darker shade for light foundation.. Maybelline fit me works great for mixing plus it's cheap too 😋😋 I'm makeup artist so I do it allllll the time
Buying shades online is so difficult but sometimes is the best option as there are more shades available.
Maybelline, L’Oréal and Nyx have a lot of shades if looking for foundation on a budget (Fit Me, True Match, Control Drop range respectively).
There are websites where you can compare foundation shades from. I also watch some RUclipsrs who are close to my skin tone and adjust accordingly (darker/ lighter/ undertone).
If you are confused between 2 shades, I always go for the darker option. I can adjust a darker one with some strategic concealer and powder place. With a lighter one I just end up looking sick and mask like.
Hope this helps.
P.S: I really wish Indian makeup market could step it up and cater to skin tones other that light beige. :/

I am a brown skin girl with yellow undertone ,I use maybelline 24/7 superstay foundation in warm sun it's orange in color but it's my skin color in summer season. I am in the fair shade range for Indians but my undertone is YELLOW, so most of the time I look yellow. The brands have foundation for pink undertone that makes everyone know that something is wrong when I put it on.
So yeah the foundation range in Indian market only carter to 10% but due to the people acceptance of using fairer and pinkish shade led to a slow growth or stagnancy in diversity of colour range.
I don't apply foundation and stuff not even cc creams , they look so extra coz obviously Ive got zero patience to find my shade and also I'm broke AF!!!!!
Though I belong to the fair category , but I look weird , I mean it looks cakey on me , very artificial , I will wear foundation only when i get one that actually looks like my second skin
So I prefer concealer , they hide my blemishes too😌
In short I feel makeup makes me look ugly , "uglier"😂
Hahaha true
LA GIRL HD foundation! Hands down the best! I've been using it for a couple of years and it goes super well with my typical South-India shade!
Even I mix L'Oréal "True Match" Honey and Golden Beige to match my skin tone but it's still grey 😭
You need a foundation with a yellow undertone, not pink
Really appreciate the initiative. Hope cosmetic companies are listening. I don't buy foundation as it makes my skin look dead and grey. Have tried MAC and Revlon and everything in between.
And I am so fair that even maybelline’s lightest shade is dark for me🤦🏻♀️ these stores need better shade ranges!
I am medium skin tone... olive, actual shade NC37. I buy two shades warmer/darker - NW33. Makes me look nice and tan.
You girls are too gorgeous for those stupid foundations TBH! I liked looking at the non foundation side more...🤭 I was like this is more beautiful dude!
All cosmetics shops should have white light instead of fancy lights as it helps in buying the right shade. Orange fancy lightings make everything (right from foundation to lipstick shade) look different. That's the main reason as to why foundations/any cosmetic product look great on you in the store and when you wear it at home you get to know that you have brought the wrong shade.
