Try to understand not all children can learn how to swim immediately. My inlaws have always had an inground pool and it terrified me so I put all my children through swim classes as early as 9 months but I can promise you my daughter never learned to swim until she was at least 8 years old and it wasn't for lack of trying. She just didn't have the motor skills with eye hand coordination you need to master swimming. I trained her to understand that life jackets was required in her grandparents pool for swimming at all times unless mommy and daddy were assisting her in lessons. In the meantime her best friend who lived across from us died in her parents aboveground pool at the age of 3. That little girl was supposed to be down for a nap and while her mommy was putting her baby brother down for a nap she got up and went out back, climbed in the pool and thats where she took her last breath. Drowning is silent and can happen faster then you can imagine.

i think the cheaper alternative is to teach kids very young how to swim lol...
It's a bit of a Catch 22. Once you teach a child to swim they don't fear the pool as much and could get themselves in trouble.
