@KlanyMany - Cool. Will check those out. I wasn't so much ripping on Jack & Meg, just haven't heard anything that's caught my ear. They've kicked pop culture square in the balls, which needs to be done every few years. So props to them for doing so. & also for supporting artists like Dexter, Wanda & Loretta. He has very good taste in older music including all that old Memphis & Mississippi stuff. If i ever met him I'm sure we could have a long conversation about all those old blues singers.
I was at a FdJ show in Detroit in '94 in addition to me ,, there was a small group of rabid fans gathered centered stage. who seemed to be exalting Dex & Crow on , to rock harder and further and to this day, as a citizen of Texas I cant help but think it was Jack White and friends,,crafting their own tunes ,,soon to be a phenom inspired by DEX ..
@surfercrow Totally understand what you're saying about the lack of 'roll' in modern rock; as I say, I want the roll in my rock. But, I would certainly think that the Stripes, (while certainly being far from rockabilly), def. have a good bit more roll than most modern acts. I'd suggest you listen to their songs Baby Brother, Girl You Have No Faith In Medicine, Astro, and Let's Shake Hands if you haven't. Especially Baby Brother though.
The White Stripes are Delta Garage. The Flat Duo Jets are Rockabilly Insanity. Love both bands and the fact that Jack is one cool dude for seeing the true Rock N' Roll artists makes for just one potent mix of badass. Personally, I'd love to see the White Stripes/Flat Duo Jets do a "Dueling Duos" kinda show.
The way I look at it The Flat Duo Jets and Dexter Romwebber are the real deal , from the heart, and Dex started back when they weren't too many like them. Heck, the Cramps were still pretty new at that time! The White Stripes are the result of good marketing, sold lots of units to a trendy, fickle music audience and became popular and achieved success but not for musical merit. Dex is a special guy, one of the nicest guys ever. Maybe he's just too real for people who like trendy posers.
@surfercrow If you don't like them, that's fine with me. Just thought you might be interested in hearing those songs. Their more popular songs, I do like, but most aren't my favorites. Seven Nation Army is probably one of my least favorites actually, haha. And yes, he certainly does have great taste! That's part of how he got my attention at the start because I listened almost exclusively to older music, (primarily 60's), and unlike everyone else he was showing that influence.
@deathwish959 yeah but don't forget Jack White wasn't a full on rockabilly guitarist, he was inspired by a number of guitarists: Elvis, Son House, Robert Johnson, Bob Dylan. Dexter Romweber is just one of his influences he ws blown away by. So It goes back to what mfboom23 and surfercrow said. None the less a good inspiration at that
Correction .. if you look @ the discography of re-corded FDJ songs .. the majority were " covers" which inspired me.. and if it was not for them " covering " these great RnR tunes.. I never would have heard them. Now they did write a lot of originals,, and that's ..Music..they took it to a new level , due to " inspiration " as did the White Stripes
@surfercrow The way I see it, TWS are more delta blues based, where as FDJ is more contry, texas shuffel blues based and obv more rock n' roll too. Can't compare them more then that they're two persons in respectiv band.
@surfercrow white stripes and the dead weather (forget about raconteurs, they are poppy rock) are much more blues heavy inspired rock and roll. Jack especially is a huge blues and old R&B and american folk fan and a lot of the non-commercial white stripes is quite blues heavy. He has even covered songs by Cab Calloway from the thirties or forties (St. James Infirmary, both versions are quite good actually)
The Cramps were already WELL established by the time the Flat Duo Jets formed. When FDJ dropped their first EP (late '84/ early '85) the Cramps had already released four LPs plus the compilation Bad Music for Bad People. In fact, one could argue the Cramps had already created their most essential body of work by this point. Of course, none of this takes anything away from Dex & company and their place in the pantheon of American Music. However, the need to diss Jack White is b.s.
To my ears, Dexter Romweber plays Rock AND Roll. Flat Duo Jets were Rock & Roll, whereas The White Stripes, Raconteurs, etc. is 'Rock' music. The element of "Roll" is missing from 99.9% of modern popular music...and I'm not saying it's gotta be old music to be good, because Flat Duo Jets wrote original material in this modern age and it was damned good.
well , I can totally understand ..what your saying .. but publicity is publicity,, and if Dex . inspired Jack ,, then let it be ,,,who gives a damn .. its all great & awesome R & R ?
On a level..I agree .. However I dont re-call the WS actually playing this style per say...I believe DEX ..and CROW ..forged a link from the past to present..and the White Stripes Understood this..and took the ball to the goalie..musically speaking that is .. most music is derivative..... but it takes a keen sense to realize that and grow it to a new branch in the R&R tree... so , best of the best to FDJ..and WS ..
@uncleruckus516 It's not about ball-slapping, it's about exposing kids to great music that otherwise they wouldn't hear. I'm 15 years old, and would I have ever heard of Dex's work without Jack? Unlikely. And let's face it, it's not as though the Stripes were gonna open for Dex. It just doesn't work that way.
wrong. I agree dexter is as real as it can get but to be a successfull musician/artist that´s not the only thing you need. Jack White is real and also hard working, knows how to market himself (for some reason you say that like its a bad thing) and the main difference with the unnecessary comparison is that jack white is a better song writer composer than dexter. Not only dexter but anyone out there. Is not only being real, its melody, structure, creativeness. Its a career not a jam session
the way i see it, the white stripes are good fucking music, where as the flat duo jets are good fucking music, having their roots in good fucking music. I'm sure neither band would want you lot classifying and over annalysing their music instead of listening and appreciating whole-heartedly.
Norton put out their best stuff.
Let there be rock ..
there is nothing new under the sun ..
both Dex & Jack ..
completely rock .
Genius inspires further Genius..
thank goodness.

That show would be a dream come true for me!
Love these guys since 92

This guy is the best. So many interesting sounds come out of that Silvertone! White Stripes should pay Dex to be their opening act.
These guys were the ultimate Power Duo! Kick out the jams mamma jammas!
Veryyyy gooooddddd
Aww shux,, thank ya very much !!

Awesome - The real deal!
the white stripes did open for dex one time. it was the day after they met i think.

nothing against the white stripes but dex opening for them is basically a musical talent slap in the balls.
Excellent!
same here!
Nice! Haven't seen this clip before! Great stuff!
Star Bar!
What I miss most about living in "the Triangle" is the music scene.
Bands like FDJ made the 90's a great period in my life.
@mandaltby That's 'cause they ARE a double-barreled shotgun of awesomeness.
Correction ..

@uncleruckus516 Jack White said the same in It Might Get Loud..

well if it wasnt for him not alot of people would know about the duo jets and him taking dex on tour just helped dex out a lot more
Filmed in part at Sadlack's in Raleigh (?)
@uncleruckus516 i think they're of equel talent. the white stripes just got more popular
I really like the Flat Duo Jets but The White Stripes burned a peppermint place in my mind, and they will always mean a lot to me.
@surfercrow Gotta remember Jack is a blues guitarist.
The Cramps were already WELL established by the time the Flat Duo Jets formed. When FDJ dropped their first EP (late '84/ early '85) the Cramps had already released four LPs plus the compilation Bad Music for Bad People. Oh shit - you would never believe this was a two piece!!!!! It is right?
To my ears, Dexter Romweber plays Rock AND Roll. Flat Duo Jets were Rock & Roll, whereas The White Stripes, Raconteurs, etc. is 'Rock' music. Great love song...did dex write this???
***** I know I saw them years ago at Reading Festival - 2004....really great live!
No this was written by Gene Simmons (Not THAT Gene Simmons)
I believe it was the other way around. FDJ opened for Jack and Meg at the Masonic Auditorium in Detroit.
does it was the beginning of the copy...of the copy...the copy.....copy....copy ?
power duo rocks
like a double barrel shot gun
What is Cris Crow up to these days?
well , I can totally understand ..what your saying ..
but publicity is publicity,,
and if Dex . inspired Jack ,,

White Stripes should just pay them in general.
dex looks like Jimmy kimmel, i dont know why i have to point it out but yeah.
RIP Dex
