At that time, "dude" meant a city slicker, or at least someone whose body and clothes were too clean to be a real cowboy. That was the meaning I was used to when I first heard it used (in 1967) in its current sense, as slang for "guy."
I'll never forget that moment, cz I was so surprised to hear it used that way. It wasn't Hippie slang. I don't know where it came from.
It was years before I heard it again in that sense.

It's great seeing Carl Switzer again, but my god, the acting was atrocious.
Switzerland was a monster on the set during the lil rascals era. Stardom went completely to his head. The cast and crew hated him and he poisoned the dog from the little rascals. I'm glad somebody unloaded on this guy.
