My theory is that our male athletes have so many more professional sports options that pay a lot more (NFL football, NBA basketball, MLB Baseball and NHL Hockey), so our best male athletes are spread out more and usually don't play soccer. Our women have far fewer professional options though (only basketball and soccer), so those two sports get all of the best female athletes.
