Thank you for your video. I have been launching/retrieving a 24' runabout for decades. I learned a few things, but the point you brought up a few times; when there is no current and no wind, this job is a lot easier than if either wind or current exists. Also when the ramp is close to to the dock to hop back and forth also makes it a lot easier.

Very clean set up. I have never owned a salt water boat. Although freshwater has it challenges as well, mostly inexperienced boaters driving too fast or not knowing boating etiquette. I definitely appreciated this video. I suppose I'd call myself a seasoned boater at least in regards to trailering being that every time for the past 22 years we take out our boat I'm either driving the boat, backing the trailer up, or all of the above. Albeit it's a much smaller boat at just 21ft, I live in a area where there are really only two small lakes power boat friendly within a 1/2 hour drive in a population of a million plus so a lake with 1 boat ramp and 3 lanes is n definitely busy and people are always watching so you have to know what your doing....Awesome video because I love to learn from other boaters even though I've been doing it so long, not every boat/truck/suv is the same of course and it's interesting to see how people do things.

  • @jasonleedham5678
    @jasonleedham5678 3 года назад +1

Nice to see how things are done elsewhere in the world, here in UK the max you can legally tow is 7700lbs, even if you had your Jimmy.
I think we would consider 24 foot as the maximum boat size to tow here, most anglers keeping to 16/17 foot, and a 60hp engine seems quite a high output outboard.......
Oh and its never THAT calm here, or as clear.
Mind you we can't fish at all currently unless we can walk or cycle to our venue!

Great info. Another couple quick ideas to get into the habit of. I always unhook safety chains last. You should al always scotch wheels anyway but if your trailer is going to roll away on you at least the chains are still on. Another is get in the habit of touching your wheel hubs. After a long trip they may get warm but as bearings start to wear out the hub will get hot. Getting used to the temperature is key. I also recamend a nice spare with extra hub and bearings built in.

Great video. We launch off the beach and through the surf, but many of the same lessons apply. One very NB thing is to make sure you get your act together before you start taking up space on a ramp of busy beach, and how you took your boat away from the ramp to do your final checks.
A little courtesy for others goes a long way in situations where you are busy.
Most of us have a front tow hitch and winch our boats off the beach onto the trailer. I am not sure why more guys that side don't put on front tow hitches as it makes manuvering the trailer a breeze. Our boats are usually quite a bit smaller at around 15-23ft and not many above 24/25ft that surf launch.

What is great about this country is anyone has the opportunity to have this lifestyle. You won't get there by focusing on instant gratification. I am like a lot of others here; in construction. Since a young teen and have had a business over 35 years. As a business owner you get the fruits of your labor. The best tip is don't think you know everything when you are young. Surround yourself with smart successful people. Then...you have to let your money work for you. Start a business you like with the skills you are good at. You can be the best in your field but if you are working for someone you are making them rich.

I used to trailer a 35ft everglades and that's the biggest I have ever trailered and the most important thing I have to say about loading a big boat is how steep a ramp is. A very steep ramp is the hardest part to getting your boat straight on the trailer because you only have the front of the bot touching the trailer. But other than dealing with that big boat on a good trailer isn't bad. I hauled mine from near Atlanta ga to the keys, st. Augustine, Venice LA so I put some miles on it

His tow rig is a 2020+ 2500 denali SRW 4wd short bed with a duramax (worst-case) config. I looked it up out of curiosity. Lowest numbers are 18.5k conventional. He said 15k for the boat (wet w/ full fuel) and I have NO idea what that trailer weighs.
IMO, that setup is probably fine, but it depends on how you drive... I see some terrifying shit at my local lakes. Usually it's wake boats or cutty style with 1/2 ton or tahoes. Sometimes it's a sailboat on a subaru. You never know HA!

this is also ideal for not having any current that could be pushing you off the dock.. you want to make sure you are stopping before going all the way in to judge where the current is pushing the boat. Sometimes adjusting the side of the dock that you are parking will be more ideal than the other. Make your life easier.

That little pin that keeps the coupler from popping open--people take them all the time, I use one with a key lock on it. Also, for what it is worth, never boat alone, IMO. Boating is all about "redundancy" two or more of everything--and not just ONE of you. "Post a full time lookout" as you run and you can't do that if there is in fact, just one. That look out backs you up, a second set of eyes, to pay attention and a sharp watch. That of course just one reason to not boat alone. And honestly, these days, unless you are far more well to do than 99 percent of us, sharing the fuel bill is a good idea--no, not a safety issue I do realize.

Not a boater but was thinking of getting into boating. Saw a 39ft that I thought would be great and fun. I realize there are difficulties into boating. I was curious if you could even trailer a 40 ft boat. Thank you for sharing. Very interesting.

Trailering is the easiest part for me as a new boater. But I have been backing up a camper and landscaper for 5 years. I hope I get the docking in current down eventually. That is the hardest part for me

Wait a while before you launch your boat for your trailer bearings to cool down. Never quench them hot they’ll fill with salt water whether you have seals or not.

I have a 43 foot camper, but I've never pulled a boat that long! After watching you I'm ready, all I need now is probably about two hundred and fifty thousand on the short side for the boat. 🤣

Bro this is a great video! Most people need to practice this. If you don’t mind me asking, what ramp is that? I have a problem finding ramps down south, unless that one is a private ramp

I would add that you should check tire pressure on the trailer before going to get the boat. Great job!

I check my truck tires too. Might be paranoid but my truck and trailer are expensive lol.
