The vocals combined with the orchestra kicking in under “look just like mountains through the snow” in Moments of Pleasure gets me every time. It sort of acts like a key that opens the flood gates to all the memories and feelings about those I’ve lost. Thanks for reviewing Kate’s albums, takes me back to hearing them all as they came out over the last 43 years!
Director's Cut is such an integral part of Kate Bush's vision and the reworking of some of the songs are just too brilliant to be missed! It's something I personally would love for you to react to but if you don't want to, it's fine and honestly, your decisions for Aerial and 50 Words For Snow are the best decisions you could make. Aerial is such a Spring/Summer album opposed to 50 Words for Snow which is SUCH A WINTER ALBUM these are IMO Kate Bush's most mature odysseys
The Rubberband Girl video is so good, Kate actually made a movie out of the videos for this album called The Line, the cross and the curve which you can find on youtube
I saw one interpretation a while back when I first listened to The Red Shoes about the track "Big Stripey Lie" which was that it could be about the mental state of a schizophrenic and the effects of that. With the voices that they don't believe are just internal conflict and wild animals, jungle imagery and the up and down of a line so I have always enjoyed that interpretation as it works really well with the jarring production and betters the song as one of her best among this album!
Kate directed and starred in a mini-movie to promote the album featuring stand-alone videos for Rubberband Girl, And So is Love, The Red Shoes, Lily, Moments of Pleasure, and Eat the Music (where Kate dances in fruit!). Worth seeing if only for The Red Shoes where Kate "goes to hell" and dances with two adorable boys in devil costumes!
I'm so sorry for your loss. I know exactly how you feel know, I lost my father 9 months ago. Keep doing your good work if it helps you, but no one would blame you if you need a break. Hugs
Totally hear you about it not being one of her best albums. It's got some great songs, but isn't nearly as complex or brilliant as some of her other albums. It was a really tough time for her. Her mother had passed the previous year. Her romantic relationship with close musical collaborator Del Palmer, who had known her since she was a teenager, was ending. You're the One, Top of the City, And So Is Love clearly relate to that break up. And Moments of Pleasure is such an amazingly gorgeous song. So sad, singing about all the loved ones she has lost. So great to see you go through her entire career. I will say, from my perspective, skip Director's Cut. I know some people love it, but Kate Bush is my favorite artist of all time, and I hate Director's Cut. However, I'm so excited for you to do Ariel! That is an album of genius. It's my #2 or #3 album. Hounds of Love, The Dreaming, and Ariel are my top 3, and I can never decide what order they should go in, except Hounds of Love is her masterpiece.
This used to be my least favorite Kate Bush album, but I've really grown to appreciate it. I think the main problem is that the production of this album, and indeed, a lot of pop albums from the early 90s, has aged even worse than her albums from the 70s and 80s! That said, the actual songs are pretty stunning for the most part, especially "Moments of Pleasure" being one of her best slow songs.
Thanks for your vulnerability and sharing about your mom Jesse, and may she RIP. I lost my own mother about two years ago, and I definitely relate to songs like Moments of Pleasure so much more now.
This album has grown in me. You should try Directors Cut, it' so beautiful and profound, you should listen to it on Fall/Winter, it will set the mood for the album. Great to see how you enjoy making those videos for us and for you. Sorry for your lost. It makes us feel less worried seeing how strong and resilient you are. Take Care 💚
My favourite songs from this album would have to be 1 Moments of Pleasure 2 You're the One and 3 Big Stripey Lie in that order. What were your favourite tracks?
I always associated the Song of Solomon with the connection between human passion and Divine love. The pain from being separated from God ( the beloved) is expressed as an unbearable yearning. "Comfort me with apples for I am sick with love" is the biblical phrase, but Kate alters it slightly to "sick OF love"
Douglass Fairbanks was an actor in old hollywood in the silent film era to the mid 30s. The names she names at the end are friends, family or worked with.
Jesse, Kate took the idea of the story behind this album and created a film called "The Cross,The Liune And The Curve" it's trying to make the entire album visual almost create her own version of the fairytale of the Red Shoes. The film wasn't thart well recieved at the time and ithis did knock Kate's creative confidence. You can get the film on DVD.It has moments that are really stunning visually. It also features Miranda Richardson as the cursed dancer. I actually love this album and loveed the film too.Excerts from the film were made into videos for singles from this album. (matt)
It might be but overall, it's a direct reference to a novel written by Honoré De Balzac (one of the most important french novelists during 19th century with Victor Hugo, Gustave Flaubert and Emile Zola) "The Lily of the Valley". Remember Kate Bush very often refers to books or movies. She makes no exception with "The Red Shoes" allthough the lyrics might sound more straightforward than in her other albums.
@@ownyourcrazy8734 Actually I might be wrong as "The Song of Salomon" directly references to a biblical episode ("Song of songs") in which the "Rose of Sharon" and "A rose of the valley" are mentioned as it is specified in this wikipedia article (see biblical origins): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rose_of_Sharon But Kate Bush also mentions litterature figures such as Isolde and Marion which made me think of "The lily of the valley" novel. Actually, in "The Song of Solomon", she directly quotes some parts of the biblical part of the same name, so who knows? In "The Red Shoes", KB references have a lot to do with christian and biblical things (she was raised as a catholic which is pretty rare in England, but her mother was irish. And she studied in a catholic convent school as a child allthough she claims not having religious beliefs and was probably more influenced by oriental spiritual philosophy by her brothers): Jesus ("Why should I love you?" which is probably about a nun), archangels ("Lily"), angels ("Top of the city" which is also possibly a reference to Wim Wender's "Wings of Desire" movie). Even "The Red Shoes" Andersen fairytale has strong christian references in it. But the introduction to "Lily" is a direct quote from the gayatri Mantra which is the most important hinduist prayer from the Veda, basis of the Hindu Religion, even in Buddhism. It is mentioned here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gayatri_Mantra There's a lot to learn with Kate Bush...

I love the poem that opens "Lily" it's like a blessing or a prayer.

So sorry to hear about your mother. Thoughts are with you. Thanks for your great Kate Bush reviews.
Loved the album The Red Shoes...full of emotions ...from sad to comforting....helped me through a difficult time in my life. Thnx Kate Bush ;)
Dear Jessie my condolences....I hope you get through in a good way.... big hughes from Holland
Only Kate Bush can sing the word ‘bull shit’ sound beautiful

The Red Shoes is one of my favorite Kate Bush albums ever and Lily is tied for favorite with Jig of Life.

Moments of pleasure is the best song on the album and one of her best. Such a beautiful ballad.

I'm the Bible the Song of Solomon is about the expression of love. Some say it's about King Solomon and The Queen of Sheba.

Taking a break from Kate Bush? Ha ha good luck with that, wont happen you're one of us now!
look to the Movie

Holy Sh%t, the Film Actors Guild likes Kate Bush!
You are right, this is her weakest album to me as well. Can't wait for Aerial, which is one of her best.
The master Eric Clapton on And So is Love.

Isn't "Lily Of The Valley" a native flower in Canada?

There's a lot to learn with Kate Bush...
Eat the music.
I hate You’re The One. Seems beneath Kate to sing a standard torch ballad with simple lyrics .
