I recently listened to the 5 most-sold Taylor Swift songs. Saying to myself "if so many people find it likeable I should give it a try" I tried them and that was it. No download, no purchase. I also tried Lorde "Royals", same result. Seems I am immune. It is trivial that to like a song you have to hear it first, a chicken and egg problem for the music business. Only liking a song because other people like it: how crazy is this?
I think that there is also a second group of rebellious music listeners. These people present an inverse coorelation of the popularity effect. Although they are the minority, there is a large community of these kinds of people especially in certain genres. Kurt Cobain would be a textbook example of this mindset. But anyway, this video is awesome. Thank you for sharing!
Brilliant understanding of what makes a hit. Makes me feel better about my art output. 😊 Thank you.
