I just got asked to join a band as their bassist and they wanted me to learn this song. I used this video to learn and they were blown away by my performance. Thank you so much for making this 🤘🖤
Love the adaptation. Really gets those particular notes across and super fun to play! Awesome cover, going to be adding this to my repertoire! Thanks for the video!!
Thank you! Can't wait to learn this. Looks fun too play. Last time I was learning songs on the bass we didn't have RUclips. Feels so good to keep back into playing. My vitality has returned!
First I was happy to finally have found a tutorial for this epic song, but then I realized: Your bass has 5 strings xD Thats why I could never play it, I always thought it was my mistake, not hearing the right notes when I listened to the song (I am a beginner obviously xD)
Don't worry man! Although my Bass have 5 strings, the whole song can be played on 4 strings. In fact I don't use the 5th strings for this song, so...check the tabs or the audios (both free to download in the link in the description) and lets play It! 🤘
Thanks Ben! I don't mind of course 😄 it's tuned half tone down: D# G# C# A# (I don't use the 5th string, as the original song is played in a 4 string Bass)
Most of the song could be considered medium-easy, but the opening lick, which is repeated a few times during the song, is a bit tricky, i'd say it's hard. So my overall consideration: medium difficulty
Hello Mr. Bass it's me agian. Sorry for asking a lot of questions but as a kid your always curious I have just 1 question. When you play with hands it sounds deep and quite but how do you get it to sound how your playing it it sounds so perfect.
Hi @SCREECH, don't worry, I'll answer you as long as I can. Comments are always welcome. For this question there's no simple answer. Let me think about It, and I'll try to explain it
I suppose you're beggining to play Bass, and I suppose you're are playing plug directly to an amp (which is the most common situation for a begginer, I think). So I'll explain you some points that could help you. I hope you feel like reading😅
The tone of a bass is affected by many things. Let's start from the beginning: The instrument: the first thing that will condition your sound (but not necessarily the most important) is your Bass. Each Bass sounds different, mainly due to the kind of pick-ups It has bulit on. There are basses more oriented to rock and metal, others for funk, jazz, etc.. but in the end you can play anything with any Bass. I assume that you already have one bass, and there's nothing to do with that, and there's totally fine. The reason of not achieving the sound you like isn't your Bass (probably) The strings: they affect a lot to the sound of a bass. New strings uses to have a lot of brightness (this high end sound that sounds metalic and crispy), and as the time passes they lost this brightness, and tend to sound more dark, muted, dull...This bright is very charateristic in rock&metal bass sound (in jazz or reggae for example is the opposite). Unfortunately bass strings are not cheap, so usually people can't afford buying new strings as often as they should. The point is this: the older the strings, the worst for obtaining a good sound for rock and metal. Sad but true. Bass configuration: first the volume and tone knobs. I like to fix the volume knob always at 100% and the tone knobs 100% treble. I think It's very common un rock&metal bass. Second, the bridge action. It's refered to the adjustment of the bridge that controls the height of the strings. High strings tend to sound duller, and low strings clashes with the frets too much and sounds noisy and unpleasant. We need this fret noise (It's this clanky sound that you can hear from Steve Harris, from iron maiden) , but just a bit, not too much, so the point is to fix the bridge as lower as you can without this unpleasant fret noise. You can do this with an Allen wrench, that uses to be included when you buy the Bass. The way of playing: we are talking about metal bass sound with fingers, so my advice is to learn to pluck the strings HARD, to obtain a lot of what is called attack. If You use a pick can obtain a lot of attack also with less effort (and without blisters in your fingerprints 😅), but it's up to you, both thecniques, fingers and pick, has their pros and cons. But the overall tip here is, for metal, play hard. You can choose where to locate your right hand. Close to the bridge the sound emphasizes the mid-range frequencies, very common in jazz, not too much in rock. Close to the neck emphasizes low and high range frequencies, It's the kind of sound you are looking for (geezer buttler from black Sabbath play a lot close to the neck, obtaining a very charateristic sound). To play in the middle, just over the pickups, is an intermediate situation, more confortable and if you play hard enough can obtain more or less the same effect of playing near the neck. The amp: this is a huge topic. The options are endless. The amp conditions the sound probably much more that the previous points. Each amp has It own sound and character, so It Will condition dramatically the sound of your Bass. First, if you have any small amplifier, one of those 25watts amps disegned for playing at home, I think It's difficult to obtain an huge metal tone. If not, the brand and model of your amp will rule your sound. Talking in general the most important thing to do with It is the equalization. If You have 4 knobs for the eq (as It usual, Bass, mid-bass, mid-treble and treble), what i like to do is: Bass around 1o'clock, mid-bass 9o'clock, mid-treble 2-3o'clock, treble 2-4o'clock. Too much Bass could mud your sound, and too little Bass, let's the high frequencies rises too much and the result is noisy. Mid-bass frequencies could also mud your sound, I like to cut them a bit. Also could give you an extra punch in your sound, so It's Up to you. Mid-treble gives you definition and trebles this crispy sound. For metal is needed a reasonable amount of treble frequencies, but as always not too much, because It could sound a bit disturbing. It's up to you to play with the eq to find your own sound. As a tip, if you like modern metal, raise the Bass and trebles, and cut the mids. If you like more clásico sound raise the mids. But the main tip is to experiment with It and try different options. But as I told you, It depends on the amp, each one behaves different. If You have an ampeg you'll get this tone easily than with a Fender, for example. Effects: another endless topic. They are not essential, they're optional, but It can give you the chance to obtain your metal tone even if your amp is not oriented to it . The basics for metal are: a compressor, which balances the volumen of the notes you play, making you sound more consistent, and distorsion. For distorsión I'm using a Darkglass pedal, which is mostly the responsible of the tone you hear in my videos. There are many brands and models and each one will give you different tones, and allows you to obtain a tone similar to what you are you looking for. That's all, I expect this explanation helps you a bit. In RUclips are a lot of videos that explains how to get a metal tone, make a search and you Will learn a lot.
Thanks Kristian! Right, the original bassline, in the main riff/verse riff, doesn't follows the guitar, mostly plays E string, and also in the beginning of the chorus riff. I played this way because I love this riffs and I would have regreted to play the original (and so less cool, sorry) bassline.
Hey man, amazing cover! I’m having a little problem muting the upper string while playing the beginning riff, do you have any tips for a beginner? Thank you in advance! :)
Thanks dude! The way I mute the E string is by resting my right hand thumb over this string (except in the moment I play this string, each four notes). You can see It in the video, when I play this riff before the chorus. I usually rest the thumb over the 5string or over the pickup, but un this moment I rest over the 4 string to mute It. I do It naturally, without thinking, but if you can't, practice It, play the first 3 notes resting the thumb over the E string, and when you play the fourth note, remove the thumb, only for this note, and rest It again In the E string for the Next 3 notes, and so on. I Hope my explanation helps you!
Hi Pedro! Exactly the same, I don't use the 5th string for this song, and obviously the original is played in a 4 string Bass. the only things, is that is tuned 1/2 tone down (D# G# C# A# instead the std E A D G)
@MatheusFragoso Darkglass Microtubes b7k is mostly the responsible of the sound. Then some eq, Mark Bass plugin, and then mixed a bit with the clean Bass signal did the rest.
Are you still angry? 🤣
Always!! 😂😂
@@BassAttacks Good, keep it angry haha

Dave Ellifson is so underrated. Definitely one of the best bassist in thrash metal.
Totally agree Bob! Ellefson is a great bassist, his basslines are so precise and accurate but also powerful and complex sometimes.
I'd say he is higly rated by most people though :)
By mostly Bassist like myself.@@Mormorinhoo

Dave doesn't double the guitar on the main riff. He simply pedals on the E.

@@BassAttacks Yes, I just saw another comment from you down here explaining that the bass is tuned down. I never did that before, time to try! Thanks!
It's very easy, only tune all the strings half tone down, and play normally. Good luck, and practice! 💪💪

What would one consider this song as is in terms of technical difficulty and experience playing bass to be able to play? basically how hard is it?
