Rare doline wetland / Mungyeong-si, Korea / Karst

Mungyeong Doline Wetland is located at the top of Gulbongsan Mountain, a limestone area in Sanbuk-myeon, Mungyeong-si.
In general, limestone areas have good drainage, making it difficult for wetlands to develop.
For this reason, Mungyeong Doline Wetland is a very unique case and has a very high academic value.
Doline refers to a basin formed by erosion of limestone by rainwater, and is densely distributed in Seonam-ri and Bugok-ri of Hogye-myeon and Ugok-ri of Sanbuk-myeon in Mungyeong.
Among them, only Mungyeong Doline Wetland, located in Ugok-ri, Sanbuk-myeon, shows the characteristics of wetland formation on Doline topography.
This is because Terra rossa, a weathered limestone soil, is piled up on the bottom of the doline wetland to form an impervious layer.
Terrarossa is a clay soil in the limestone zone, composed of impurities such as silicic acid and iron, as the calcium carbonate of limestone is dissolved by rainwater or undergroundwater.
In addition, the Mungyeong Doline Wetland is a relatively small area, but it is an area rich in biodiversity because land, grassland, and wetland ecosystems coexist.
Mungyeong Doline Wetland was designated as a ‘National Wetland’ in 2017 in recognition of its value.
