The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Comic genius with an incredible sense of timing. He was without comparison one of the most entertaining performers on Ed Sullivan's show. I never grew tired of the Master and his brilliant routines.
he was my grandfather, or is, because he will always be, and he was like a father to me also.
I always loved him too
you were so lucky to have such a fantastic grandfather, he was amazing - thanks for letting us know - makes him so much more of a real person :}
He was great! Loved watching him on tv.
What an amazing experience all grandfathers can be wonderful.... watching his performance , and being able to share them gives me the ability to let people understand what it’s like inside my head.... A gift to me personally from your grandfather. He is loved and always will be as long as there are representations of his beautiful legacy of performances.
My name is Wences just like your grandfather
Senor Wences was the best ventriloquist ever. His amazing skill and humor still amazes me today. I love the way he changes tones depending on if Pedro's box door is open or closed , lol.
Are there really only these few clips of Senor Wences? No one could do rapid-fire exchanges between multiple characters like this guy could. Even late in life, when he couldn't keep his lips from moving, he was hysterical!
My wife is younger than I am, and didn't remember Sr. Wences. So when, this morning while she was fixing breakfast, I came in the kitchen and, seeing the pan with a lid, said "S'awright?" lifted the lid and said "S'awriight!" she had no idea what I was talking about. I had to show her, and now she's hooked. This is a marvelous sample. Comedy was so different in those days, and Sr. Wences did other things, as well, like juggling while he ventriloquized. I think I'll Fw it to my dad.
Yep, I think we've all tried that routine and had the same reception, lol!
This is a perfect description of what it feels like in my head sometimes. Bless this man and all of his wonderful talent....A beautiful performer
Senor Wences was excellent. He was also 103 when he died. Thank you for uploading this.
l don't think people appreciate how truly talented this guy was.
What nostalgia you have shared. As a kid I watched him perform on the Ed Sullivan Show, and after watching Senor Wences for the first time, I couldn't wait to see him again. The "it's all right" man in the box still cracks me up. Though he performed many years ago, I would be willing to bet that the kids of this generation would enjoy him just as much. Thanks for sharing!
What a wonderful entertainer - I remember seeing him on Ed Sullivan - Thank goodness we have these clips to share - thanks
Wonderful man. He is just so funny. Good for the "inner child" in all of us.
He is HILARIOUS. Such a masterful ventriloquist.
I think I know why his passing wasn't so big on the news as it should have been because he passed away at the age of 103 on April 20, 1999.
I never knew that! He just crossed my mind today (I too loved him on the Ed Sullivan Show - my whole family did & we imitated him all the time!) & was very happy to find that so many others remembered him as fondly
Wow, many fine memories of my father and I imitating Senor Wences "sal right".
Looney Tunes use to parodied him a lot using that line
@@ashonlewis9353Yosemite Sam said it in a cartoon.
Danny Devito's character talks enthusiastically about Senor Wences in the film Tin Men set in 1963.
He's got no oooooverhead
My whole family used to roll on the floor watching this.
I loved this guy when I was a kid!!
I loved this guy when I was dead (Hello darkness my old friend)
He was always great.
Wow, this is so great! Señor Wences was one of my favorites on Ed's show when I was a kid. I even have the 1961 45-rpm record that has "Deefeecult For You, Easy For Me" one side, and "S-All Right? S-All Right!" on the other.
The audience didn't care that you could see his lips move. We liked his silliness. I mean, seriously, a talking head in a box?
An extremely,extremely,criminally underrated comedian 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I loved this and especially when "Johnny" would talk even after he was put away.
I was very glad to find this clip and he was indeed a genius in my opinion. I'm glad that artists like Jeff Dunham today are keeping the almost lost art of ventriloquism alive and well. It keeps the legacy of someone like Senor Wences alive and available for future generations to enjoy!
5 voices in one act, no one can handle that today
OMG - thank you sooooooooooo much. i loved Señor Wences. i so love that we can watch all this great stuff on RUclips. "And now for a really big show."
I loved this guy
I loved it when Senor came on the show! He was so cool!
The characters he creates seem so alive and individual. The illusion is a result of his comedic genius. No special effects necessary.
So his lips moved, who cares - Peter Brough was a ventriloquist on the RADIO. Senor Wences was always one of my favourite acts on TV as I grew up, his characters were brilliant and his act was funny that's what counted. But to say (as beasst94 does below) that no one can handle 5 voices in one act today, I would answer, watch Jeff Dunham. Thank you to whoever put this video up on RUclips, it brought back so many happy memories.
He was almost 70 here. Amazing.
He's STILL cracking me up in these old videos.
Thank you for sharing this.
Such skill. Must watch again.
A mistake was speaking into the earpiece.
I agree fully. As a kid watching Senor Wences on a number of TV shows, he brought such life to those funny characters that I just naturally thought they were doing all their own talking! --- He was a master, there'll never be another like him.
Thx for the post! As a child I loved watching him on the Ed Sullivan show.
entertainment from a purer time in American life
Oh please....they did blow the second the camera was off. Stop being so naive about the past. It sucked then as it sucks now.
This is the only ventriloquist that can make cigar smoke come out of his bare hand through the first puppet in this video! To this day, magicians are still trying to figure out how the hell it was done! Amazing!
That was great. I wonder if the kids of today would appreciate him like we did back then.
word! i could not believe how good the phone bit sounded, i thought it was a recording for sure at first, awesome talent right there.
Blessings to those that posted this video. I've been looking for years ... thank you!!!!
" 's alright"
How the hell did the make his voice sound like it was on the telephone?!!Impressive.
The guy in the box cracks me up!
S'Alrightt!
I first saw Senior Wences on The Muppet Show and remember I was so mesmerized! He brought Cecelia Chicken to life and wanted to adopt that precious cute little chickie.
He performed well after the age people normally retire . He finally developed problems with voice switches and co-ordination. Dropping props, etc., and he finally realized that he just couldn't adlib his way out of a mess endlessly. He retired with grace.
Shows you don't need any fancy stuff...just imagination, a heart, and a hand...Wences was one of a kind...
I didn't care whether this man moved his lips or not. Senor Wences was an endearing entertainer whose routines left me spellbound .
Genial !!! aún teniendo un tiempo estos vídeos, son realmente una muestra de grandes artistas... superrrr !!
This guy cracked me up when i was a lil kid :-) Thanks for posting!!!
Who are the 33 people with no sense of humor? I couldn't wait for Senor to come on when our family watched Ed Sullivan. What a talented man.
I feel like a fat kid eating chocolate cake on a summers hot day
Everyone was mesmerized.
1966.... the best time in the 20th century to be a kid.
I'd never heard of Senor Wences until I binged The Muppet Show. I had no idea that a ventriloquist could be so incredibly good.
He is, who I would consider, the greatest vent of all time.
Brilliant entertainer!
Was just thinking about how long before "Wazzzup!" existed, there was "S'aright!"
This man was such a master
"Jennifer Lopez"
"Henefer Lopay"
I've always had a soft spot for Senor Wences and always looked forward when they appeared on this Show.
He was incredible!!
Fantastic
HILARIOUS! That was a scream.
I WATCHED HIM WHILE IN FIRST YEAR OF COLLEGE.
The fact that we can see his lips moving at times seems completely unimportant to me.What I appreciate is his sense of timing and humor. If you simply sit there waiting to catch the illusion out then you are robbing yourself of the magic. Art sometimes demands that we suspend our disbelief and allow ourselves to become active participants in the illusion.
He's very good. Really makes the voices come alive! A genius in his own way.
And Mel Blanc imitated his "S'all-Riiiiiight" on The Flintstones.
Scott Matheson TRUE, it wil be like watching a movie and constantly reminding yourself that those are actors / special effects or going to DISNEY WORLD constantly looking for the imperfections or technically analizing the whole thing missing all the FUN .....is called to WILLINGLY SUSPEND your DISBELIEF !
"Goodiiiiiiiiiiiies...........Goody, Goody, Yum, Yummmmmmm................"
Yes. And also current entertainers will always be trying to improve on what came before, so we naturally expect more expertise over time.
Great post!!!!! Thank You.
Love it, thanks
Genius! True genius!!
i love my taco flavoured kisses
Aired 5 days before my 5th Birthday. Dang I'm old.
Master!
Amazing
Memories
Great stuff
Señor Wences (Mister Wences), was from Spain.
Good job!
Maravilloso.
El Señor is the best
Tacos tacos! Burritos, burritos…saw-right 👌🏼
Genius. Sheer genius!
thanks
It has been so long since I've seen Senor Wences (I keep wanting to spell that 'Wencles' for some noel reason), that I had forgotten that he was a master ventriloquist. Mostly, I remembered the hand with lipstick routine and, of course, "S'right" {i.e. Pedro in a box}. What I am leading up to is that NOW I do kinda watch his lips, simply out of amazement. When I was a child, I don't think I even GOT the idea that the man was doing all of the voices.
he's funny. he will be missed
Statler: Ole!
Waldorf: Bravo!
Statler: S'Alright?
Waldorf: S'Alright!
Ah The Muppet show
I keep expecting Cartman to come on and start singing about tacos and burritos.
Your wishes were not fulfilled by taco flavored kisses.
Muy simpático Senor Wences!! :)
The face in the box scared the hell out of me when I was a kid.
Seriously, he was really good!! Haven't watched him since I was a kid. Pretty funny!!!
In the early 1970s, I saw him live at the Crazy Horse club in Paris, France. He was still pretty darn funny. Actually better than the ugly strippers. The cost of drinks were astronomical. The two drink minimum almost bankrupted me.
Nice job
Classic television
I can't believe it! How can Spanish people not recognize such a talented man?
I can imagine that he was virtually unknown for many generations of comrades, in which I include myself, and that is sad. I've discovered him today and I am amazed to see how good and fun he was, glad to know he had the success he deserved in the US. What amazes me most is that his nephew, José Luis Moreno, who also was ventriloquist (among other professions) had huge success here in the 80s-90s.
Senor Wences appeared 23 times on Ed's program (including Elvis Presley's second appearance on the show, in October 1956); he was one of Sullivan's "evergreen" performers [going as far back as being part of several of his charity benefit shows during World War II], and could always be counted on to "entertain the family" at home (and in the studio) inbetween the "bigger acts" to follow...
This used to qualify as entertainment... simpler times.
Was he really 103 when he passed away ?? I can remember watching him on Ed Sullivan Show, he was a very talented man
Liked his beer commercials.
hes hella dope !
Senor wences was a very funny ventriloquist :)
so this is where matt and trey parker got the idea for "taco flavored kissies"
4/17/1896 - 4/20/1999
rest in peace Senor Wences
And lived to be 103.
He is. The. Best. So. Funny.
the guy was a master
He made records in the fifties: "S-All Right? S-All Right" and "Deefeecult For You - Easy For Me"
