Many developers update older games because they have to. Low res textures wouldn't work on modern displays. The difference here is because there aren't any textures to speak of. It's still sharp and pleasant to the eyes.
I was born in '84, in Portugal. I had a VHS tape of game demos at about '93, in particular featuring a Virtua Racing gameplay demo with prominent guitar solo soundtracking. Man, there’s something so awesome about these early 3D games with flat-shaded polygons. It’s such a rare and unique style, I love it. Especially those arcade games, like this or that space game you showed briefly from Namco!
1992! I remember Virtua Racing came early in the 3D evolution of games. But holy shit, looking at the original version now and comparing to what most games looked like, even in the arcades - this was pretty fucking advanced. And I still love the low-poly look. Keep them DF Retro's coming. Good stuff.
It's not quite arcade perfect. Where are the birds on the track in stage 2, for instance? Daytona got a great HD port on the XB360, download only unfortunately.
Honestly the best way to experience the game is try to find a working sit down arcade machine somewhere. Like seeing a movie in a big ass theater vs. watching one on your phone. Of course these days people have 50 inch widescreen TV's at home, big sound systems and even racing seats and force feedback wheels, but in the 90's and even in early 2000's these Sega cabinets were just absolutely mind blowing experiences you just couldn't have at home.
Great vid, as per usual. I still remember seeing VR in the arcades in the mid 90s and it blew my teenage stack- even if as John mentioned Daytona a year later was even more amazing. Grabbing it on switch now!
I spent hundreds (thousands?) of hours playing Virtua Racing on my Mega Drive (actually, it was a Genesis), and this episode of DF Retro made me very very happy. Thanks for the nostalgia trip, I'm remembering every single detail of those moments playing the game as a kid. Yes, I cried a bit.
Back when I lived in England, there were some arcades that had some of the most futuristic, top of the line machines around... I played a 4-D racing game that you had to actually get into a physical racecar, seat belt n all... There were actually 3 wide screen monitors in front of you for a complete 180° view! The car moved, rumbled, shook, made sounds, and would even blow air on you at certain times when you'd accelerate to make it feel like wind!!!... And this was back in the late 80's/early 90's... I swear on everything... The games I got to play were insane!... I got to see some really wild arcade machines...
Gorgeous! M2's amazing work converting quad-based 3D into modern hardware gives hope for some of the seminal Saturn games getting ported over to modern systems!
Tip, if you toggle RGB between full range/limited in the switch's settings.. depending on your TV and TV color settings you can achieve a pleasing workaround somewhat.
I hope they patch out the joycon issue and let us use any controller in 8 player. I have the tech for the most kick ass 4 player monitor and wheel set up but can't do it yet.
I just got around to watching this vid. Excellent vid as usual! John you are nothing short of a legend my friend. Love the in-depth technical analysis of all kinds of games but when you go in-depth on old school arcade racers well, I just sit back, grab a cup of coffee and prepare for an AMAZING show! This vid on VR, as well as the one you did on Ridge Racer V and Type 4 back in 2016 are so good, I downloaded them to my hard drive for infinite viewings. Keep up the great work my friend.
Man, even if this colours are a bit wrong, this game looks amazing, it’s somehow even better than the original arcade game. If I go and play this someday, it’ll be on the Switch.
I wonder if the RGB full range got disabled on his Switch? I've noticed that mine doesn't always work right. Then again, the visuals were the same in handheld
Hell yeah, I got the best idea of using an Elgato and OBS to project the splitscreen between multiple monitors to really make the closest to the arcade. Racing wheels be cool too but thats like $100 a set up
I think the colors they used were the exact same ones as the arcade did. A CRT monitor tends to wash out colors so games deliberately oversaturated themselves to compensate.

thank you so much for making me aware of the ps2 version....I didn't know..lol. VR is one of my all time favorite racers even more so than photo real ones. There's something timeless about it. I remember being blown away seeing it in the arcades. I specially loved those butter smooth camera transitions. I don't know how SEGA did it, they managed somehow to create games with that unique something which modern games sorely lack. Yes! we have games now with graphics close to movie CGI but unlike older games, they lack soul. I guess I'm seeing everything through nostalgia glasses.
"Let's just pretend [the Saturn version] doesn't exist." Quite harsh after knowing the developers WAS NOT GIVEN THE SOURCE CODE and had to eyeball everything, had to start work based on imaginary (non-final) specs WITHOUT A DEV KIT, then when they got a Sophia devkit they had to constantly remove the CPU out the dev kit's socket and plug their Hitachi machine into it every time they needed to debug (not to mention they bent the pins once... ouch), and weren't given the means to debug the second processor and make it work. That's the reality of early Saturn development. Sim City 2000's devs on Saturn even mentioned that when they got the initial instructions on how the Saturn would work, the instructions themselves were barely translated. Most of them were still in Japanese. Very likely Time Warner had to go through this too. I get V.R Saturn isn't 1:1, but they had everything working against them, and still somehow, it's the version with by far the most content. They didn't punk on the game at all.
M2 is really amazing. hope model2 classics will make it to SEGA AGES too also replicating too much is kind of weird with still having "insert coin" kind of stuff and stage select which still using exact arcade resources.
Nice episode! This is one of my favorite racing game from the past. Finally there is a worthy arcade conversion. Hopefully it will be available on other consoles as well.
I'll never forget Virtua Racing Deluxe on the 32X. I walked in on my older cousin playing this game in 1994 and even then was struck by what an immense leap forward this was for home consoles. I had never seen anything like that outside an arcade, with obviously hugely expensive cabinets. But lo- behold! A fast paced 3D racing game on a TV in a living room. Blew my mind, it is such a strong memory to this day.
The PS2 version is really nice but the controls are borked. Rather than the front of the car that steers it kinda pivots in the middle. This ruins an otherwise great version of the game. Additional ruinage goes to the sound effects, they are ear splittingly awful. In an aside it was great to hear my favourite track from Racing Hero at the end. M2, if you are reading this I’d love you to work your magic on a Switch port of Racing Hero, it’s such a forgotten gem. Another great video John.
Yeah they really fucked the ps2 version with the awful handling and sounds, even if someone patched the tyre screeching, the centre pivot turning breaks the Car handling.
Playing the PS2 version to death since I got my good old fat console brought to the latest state of the art a few days ago, after it being in warm dry deep sleep for over a decade. The floaty handling of the car IS strange and far from the stiff and direct force feedback controls of the arcade cabinet... Nothing to argue here... BUT nonetheless, when used to it, the PS2 version is GREAT fun... you can literally steer and drift into corners hundreds of meters before the apex, making hitting it at the absolute limit also a very exciting and fun task.
This video is amazing! It’s so cool learning about all these ports, I never realised how many there were! I only knew about the Mega Drive and 32X versions.
There was an update on my switch today which gives you the option to change the gamma setting so lowering it makes the colour more the arcade look now 😁
I wonder ... Does this video have anything to do with Ayrton Senna? That is, this very day, May 1, but 25 years ago, Senna, one of the best F1 drivers died in a car accident during a race. It's a great theory.
Virtua Fighter is next on my wishlist! Outrun and Virtua Racing have been terrific on Switch and I would love to see how M2 would work those old fighters on it.
Great video and detailed analysis. Excellent to see love for virtua racing from the developers in an authentic way. We are in some kind of retro gaming paradise. It feels that so many titles that were lacking in the 90's but still good games, are now complete, now that hardware is here. So many insights I cannot even recall. Agree PCSX2 is a fantastic way to play old PS2 games.
Considering the car turns actual red when you switch colours, it's obvious they botched something up. And the PS2 version still looks great. The palette looks so much better than the Switch version, or even the original.

Daytona USA on 360/Xb1 with a force feedback wheel is an awesome experience. It feels so close to the arcade
Thanks for another great episode of DF Retro!
It really makes me wanna buy it.
i would be happier if DAYTONA 2 got a switch release
Don't forget about Scud Race!
DREAM COME TRUE! Don't forget the soundtrack as well. It wouldn't be the same without it.
Love the df retro logo at the beginning , thank you for the episode :)
Love this game, but to be honest, this makes me want an updated version of Die Hard: Arcade (Dynamite Deka).
Thank you for telling us about RACING HERO, that song is amazing!! And of course thanks for another awesome episode.
My only gripe is the colours. Hope they can fix that. If it's an aesthetic choice, then let there be an option for classic / modern colours.
Great video! Couldn't help to notice a remixed version of the Sagaia/Darius II soundtrack playing in the background
And now take into account M2 will also handle the emulation on the MegaDrive Classic Mini :O
As for me, I'll wait for Virtua Racing to appear in the European eShop, it's not like I don't have to much to play anyway.
I’ve seen a couple of pictures showing Virtual Racing Switch showing the correct colours, or at least colours closer to the original game. I don’t know if this means it’s been fixed or not however, as I don’t own it, but it would be interesting to see a comparison of the latest version with the original added if it had been properly fixed.
I hope Virtual-On gets this kind of treatment
John Linneman... You never fail to amaze me. Since we appear to be nearly identical with our life histories vis-a-vis video games, and we have the same nostalgic loves, your DF Retro videos are just some of the greatest entertainment I can find! さすが John!
The port now has gamma adjustment.
Extraordinary work...M2 really are the masters of conversion. Excellent video, too.
I still remember playing that on 32x back in the day.
thank you so much for making me aware of the ps2 version....I didn't know..lol.
Vr racing is on the switch. Awesome I'm going to get it. I had it on the 32x. Oh man that copyright camera change is awesome.
Colors have been fixed on the Switch version with a gamma adjustment option!
Virtua Fighter DF Retro video please! Also, M2 does the Lord's work.
"Let's just pretend [the Saturn version] doesn't exist."
Quite harsh after knowing the developers WAS NOT GIVEN THE SOURCE CODE and had to eyeball everything, had to start work based on imaginary (non-final) specs WITHOUT A DEV KIT, then when they got a Sophia devkit they had to constantly remove the CPU out the dev kit's socket and plug their Hitachi machine into it every time they needed to debug (not to mention they bent the pins once... ouch), and weren't given the means to debug the second processor and make it work.
I think the color differences are due to using a modern pipeline that supports millions of colors instead of the original 256(?)-color palette
Toggling between full range/limited RGB in switch menu combined with TV's color settings can offset somewhat.
I’ve been guilty of sleeping on how good your videos are. I’m sorry, I should have subscribed a long time ago, because this content is tremendous.
M2 is really amazing.
hope model2 classics will make it to SEGA AGES too
also replicating too much is kind of weird
with still having "insert coin" kind of stuff and stage select which still using exact arcade resources.
This video is another masterpiece. Thank you for this.
I hope Sega Will port virtua racing to pc and other consoles, so we can see what it Will change if you / they add Ray tracing
DF Retro is the main reason I follow ur Channel. Amazing videos.
Scud Race / Super GT for the love of god!
Nice episode! This is one of my favorite racing game from the past. Finally there is a worthy arcade conversion. Hopefully it will be available on other consoles as well.
Next they have to release Virtua Racing with RTX ON!
wouldn't that be something.....I would love a raytraced version.
I really hope that Sega/M2 releases this VR on Xone/PS4.
Just knew John would cover Virtua Racing on Switch! Keep the retro Sega episodes coming!
I'll pick this up for the Switch, but I'd kill for updated Ridge Racer...Cmon Namco!
I don't think so.
Awesome as always, John. Keep em coming!
Just give me daytona arcade port on switch and I can die a happy man.
Great video as always, John! Hope the wait for a western release isn't too long, I've such a soft spot for the arcade game.
Would be great if M2 did a Virtual Fighter 1/2/3 rework.
Virtua Fighter Retrospective pls
Yes. And we would finally see a truly great Saturn port on the channel with VF2.
What a surprise to see new content about SEGA Virtua Racing! Thank you DF Retro! 23 minutes of bliss.
Considering the car turns actual red when you switch colours, it's obvious they botched something up.
And the PS2 version still looks great. The palette looks so much better than the Switch version, or even the original.
Amazing as usual, thank you John!
