What I really find irritating are the RUclips trainers who swear that their method is best and all others are a waste of time . Mike you always keep it real and respectful.
The trick is to only listen to the ones who aren't trying to sell you a product. If they've got an app, powder, pill or plan for sale, it's probably best to ignore them.
I hear you, (not going to say I'm a little biased here), but I got nothing wrong with people making money on something they believe in. I more so got issues when it's clearing riding the next fad or soft pedaling fear to sell a product. Like I said in the intro, I do think most are well-intentioned and just playing the game of talking about new things for content. Just important for the new enthusiast to keep all of this into perspective.
@ I understand I would definitely endorse something that worked or a product I find useful. I would not object as long as I feel something worker and could help people
The truth is training, food, and sleep are the most important aspects to making progress, but that's not what people want to hear. They want the magic pill that solves all their problems with no effort. That's why stuff like semiglutide is getting national attention. If the fitness youtubers can make a buck from selling you some nonsense supplements, then good for them. I'm not buying no muscle builder 1000. I already fell for that scam when I was a teenager 😂.
I think it is okay sometimes. RP used to talk about Versa Gripps, and they are great, and now RP is actually sponsored by Versa Gripps and they are still great, just because they finally landed the sponsorship doesn't mean that they don't believe in the product. Then you have times like Turk builder, where like there just is no way to justify the product being sold, even if Greg believes in it, the product itself has no evidence.
Love the part about TRT - I hear sooooo many young men say they are gonna do TRT when they turn 40-50 and I tell them all the time if you stay healthy and live a natural lifestyle there is no reason to do it at that age lolz I’m 37 now and still getting stronger year after year. I can’t see myself needing TRT when I’m 40. Great video
It really is purely out of influence I'm convinced that people jump on that wagon. There's so many examples of natural lifters that still look great, but they just have a lifetime of consistent diet / exercise.
Really important discussion here. In fitness just like in every industry nowadays there is a lot of noise that muddies the water. Difficult for newcomers to know left from right. One thing that has helped me with many industries is to know when you are dealing with someone who has the heart of a teacher vs the heart of a salesperson. Great vid and discussion, thanks for opening up your personal vulnerabilities and sharing with your audience!
I am glad you tackled this concept. There are a lot of influencers out there just trying to make a living and share information. There are also a lot that are charlatans trying to pad their pockets by lying to get to you to spend money. It’s up to the viewer to know the difference as it applies to them.
Thanks man. It's always tempting to ride the wave of what's "in", but like you mentioned, we got of good people out there looking to share good information.
You're correct.... Information overload = Analysis Paralysis! This can easily lead to frustration, failure, stress, Psychological and other unhealthy issues. I'm reminded of the axiom: All things in moderation.
Lots of BS out there. Easy to spot. I can't seem to find any here. I like your no nonsense and realistic approach to fitness, equipment reviews and related topics such as the one you addressed today. Looking forward to more of your videos in 2025. Have a great year Mike.
Been at it for 43 years. Back then it was lift 4 to 5 days a week , eat right and up your calories to build muscle. And to lean out was to reduce calories and carbs ( not to zero) and maybe some jogging or bicycle 3 to 4 days a week. Nothing extreme. And the same applies today. You will look good for your genetics, remember a lot of those influencers photoshop those pictures. Great video
@@ericmalitz not saying everyone has to (especially with goals) but decades of real world application coupled with research (very good recent stuff) points very good reasons why it works so well.
Such a great video. My first “influencers” in the gym were simply my older buddies who had been lifting already. The originally brofessors if you will. Just hit the gym hard and use the gains to help with sports. It really was a simpler time and made for a more enjoyable process. Ignorance can be bliss for this younger generation coming up.
Gym culture is a huge sub culture thing today! I can only remember a few adults who exercised regularly as a kid! In my teens and 20s just the jocks, frat bros, bodybuilders worked out regularly! Today it's a huge subculture like going to country music concerts or hip hop concerts! Gym culture is right up there young people take it way to serious like a part time job! All their friends are too so I get it.. I'm competitive.. hobbies are great just have to remember balance in life!
Another good video and great advice! The amount of different info out there blows my mind! I have to incorporate real life into my ‘real life’. I’m not going to not eat dinner with my fam, I’m not going to meal prep 24/7 and I can accurately log Cals 100%. Even when I start competing I will go out of my way not to meal prep as that’s not normal , I will always have those foods that I need close to hand though and estimate/log best I can
@ as you say Mike, ‘common sense’ is key, I dont have to meal prep for days in advance , it’s to anal . But I do know how much im Going to eat in a day usually. There’s so many different ways to train and splits to folllw etc, I just try to follow what fits in with me and my situation , may not be most optimal, but I gotta follow a plan I can stick to with in my life
Yes, I've jumping on in about once a week to two weeks. I've featured it on some recent videos. Biggest problem I have is making the space to leave it out, which I hope to do in this new year.
i mostly just look on here for equipment advice but i'll watch some Eddie Hall, Jeff Nip, Will Ten and Dr Mike when i'm waiting on a work thing- mostly for humor but sometimes i'll get a new technique to try but like you i'm middle aged and not revamping completely- just adding or enhancing some
I know I have driven myself crazy listening to some of these guys on what the perfect program is, walking isn’t or is exercise or the whole if you don’t have a six pack you are fat. Basically just following Mike Matthews and James Grange for programming advice for now made things much simpler.

Just kidding - I was down that rabbit hole myself with the cold showers, the supplements, etc. NOW I do it more for me on my terms, and just try to cover the damn basics: creatine, multivitamin, protein, sleep, and water. And keep working on that consistency. But yeah even trying to KEEP UP with all the influencers is exhausting and depressing. You're basically source no. 1 at this point imho. Love this vid - very necessary gut check
