    • Ozone Photon 2-liner E...
For this flight on my Photon ML I was all-up at 98 kg, which is slightly above the midpoint.
I wrote Russ Ogden about being at 98kg, his reply below:
    -------------
    "Hi Steve
98 is pretty good, this was the weight I flew throughout the development. Hono was lighter, around 95. We set the wing how we like it at these loads. 100kg is a good place too, but there is no need to fly at the max weight, I find the handling better a little lighter as it tends to yaw more in the turn and dive less than when at max weight."
    --------------
It thermals well. This was not big air, but there were some attention-getting bumps. Max climbs around 3 m/s. No tip flutters. I was out of shape, have not flown much since November... my neck got sore after only 90 minutes in the air!
The structure is very cohesive. Brakes slightly long, but with a half wrap not annoyingly so. Easy to stay in the cores. Brake force seems higher than the D4/A4. It does not have the "flick it around the turns" feel of the A4 or a SwiftSix, but the more forgiving brakes might come in handy in big, crazy air.
Launch was easy, felt like a slightly snakier A4, needing a bit more wrangling but nothing annoying. It rises easier than the D4 but feels more damped than the A4.

I am enjoying the Ozone Proton videos, it is easy to see what a great wing it is.

    Beaut looking wing !
It looked fast to me, even when not on bar.

Thanks for watching! I'm so far behind on posting. The Glide really is amazing. I'm getting used to the handling, either that or the wing is breaking in because I noticed that I'm pulling less brake to turn and I'm flying with my hands up higher than before. The glide though is quite addicting. Launching is definitely more of a challenge than the Alpina in anything other than mellow conditions. The wings snakes around more, and it requires more precise inputs. I need to do more ground handling.

It depends on the conditions that you fly in. If the photon blows up, it's going to be much more likely to cravat than a 3 line or 3/2 hybrid, because fewer lines means it's easier for the tips to get snaked in between the lines and stuck. I'm not really a super competent pilot, so I don't fly my photon in Big Air. I have my doubts if I can fix it if I have a huge blow up, I might just end up throwing my reserve.
All of that having been said, the photon is an extremely solid wing. I've never had anything more than a very tiny tip tuck, and it seems to be pretty forgiving of turbulence.

I do like your wing reviews. It seems you are an ozone fan and mostly fly ozone’s. Have you had much experience with other brands? I started on a UP Dena (high-A) then just moved up to a phi maestro 2 light (high-B). It’s a fairly large jump, I have 5 flights, about 3 hours maybe a little more so far. I mostly fly mid day in Tollhouse and Dunlap. The maestro’s glide especially on bar is incredible coming from the Dena, it’s also a very talkative glider, sometimes in a really good way, like trying to work light lift it really tells you where the thermals are at. But in 100° high pressure days the feedback seems a little too much for me at this point. I’ll get used to it and I’m sure it’ll be fine, for now I’ve had a couple evening flights (can’t launch here until close to 7pm because the cycles are coming up like a freight train until then) and I’ve had 3 mid day flights, mostly those have been short, 30-40 minutes, one just under 20 minutes, I’ve been launching getting a climb to 600-700’ over launch then just trying to find lift over the valley to give myself the most margin and ground clearance possible. Like I said it’s a bit of a jump and I’m not quite comfortable in those 6 m/s climbs yet on the maestro but it does climb very well. Anyway, happy flying and safe landing’s to you bud, keep up with the content i really enjoy it.

I have owned a Swing Nyos which I liked. When it's time to buy a new wing I do look at all the major manufacturers, but I keep buying Ozone. Part of it is my weight fits the Ozone sizing range, but of course I fit other brands too. I like the Ozone color patterns, custom colors are reasonably priced. Plus I have a dealer that gives me an amazing discount! I do wish Ozone would switch to Nitinol rods.
The Maestro 2 is an excellent wing, one of my instructors Jerome Daoust, has one.

    great video!
I released the loop on my B3 line (one on each side) and it made a noticeable handling improvement! try it, I think you'll like it. Ziad Basil mentioned it in a discussion with Jockey recently

    • @NelsonsWings
      @NelsonsWings  Год назад +1

I saw Ziad's posts and that discussion. I'm going to wait until I've got 10 hours on my photon, and all the knots have settled in and it realizes the intended factory trim. A new two line glider is not set for perfect trim right out of the bag. I want everything to settle in before I mess with it. I'm also a little nervous about increasing the angle of attack of the wingtips. I sent Russ Ogden an email about this, asked him to read the discussion on Paragliding Forum and weigh in.

Yesterday I flew in moderately punchy air at Dry Canyon and found it to be reasonably stable although it does move around more than the Alpina 4. The Glide is pretty great. I did a three mile glide and it was very enjoyable.
