Belai means to give someone some tender, loving care. The song contains many wise Malay sayings of old like 'Di mana bumi dipijak di situlah langit dijungjung' meaning wherever you are, you should follow the cultural norms of the place. These lines are linked up to the other themes in the song such as that of love. Ikan kekek comes from old Malay children's song to teach children different types of fish but again linked here in this song to other themes.
So you are right, the traditional is mixed up with the modern here in almost all aspects - the lyrics, the costumes, the dance routine as well as the musical instruments.
Of course he is fishing because the theme song is based on "fish = ikan in malay".... hahahaha

The song is very soft in rhythm but trendy and catchy. the use of "ikan kekek mak iloi-iloi, ikan gelama mak ilai-ilai" is one of the folk songs in Malaysia. Same with the song Intan Payung which takes a bit of Malaysian folk song lyrics. Maybe that’s why Belai and Intan Payung have the same but different vibes.
