Tennis in Space

- Expedition 56 crew members including NASA astronauts Drew Feustel, Ricky Arnold, and Serena Auñón-Chancellor, and European Space Agency astronaut Alexander Gerst embark upon a tennis match in space aboard the International Space Station.
Commander Drew Feustel commented on the match saying, “Our match in space was pretty challenging due to the fact that we are in a microgravity environment. We did have a net, but the rules allowed the ball to go over or under the net. Also, there was no requirement for us to stay on the ground, so to speak, so we had the freedom to play on the walls, ceiling, or floor. The game space was a bit cramped so we could not really smack the ball without making it unplayable for our opponents. Also, we did not observe a service or base line or any lines for that matter. We just did not have them. We made a lot of modifications, including to the racquets.”

It's so cute to see adults having fun in space, you can see the inner child feeling fulfilled
It looks like every one playing in play mode *0.25X*
Looks normal in 2x
@@garfeltrealtbh i tried it and it still kinda looks odd XD

1:51 Did he just make an Office reference?
Well they have TV and stuff up ther so yes lol
@@jakob6540 yeah I mean it's not like he could have seen it on earth lmao

He also seems a little bit Toby... I imagine Michael Scott arriving with a Soyuz in the ISS and discovering that Toby is there again.
@@cesius1337 now I'm imagining Michael Scott in a sokol suit 😂
It might be more appropriate to call it space pong
That would be a nice video game tbh

Lol why?? did u start this game?😂😆😂
So apparently in space tennis hitting under the net is legal.
There is no "under" in space
@Jerrin Abraham That's crusty old man to you.
@Ella Haim *no gravity
It appears at the 7th page of the rules book.
There is no up and down in space. Your brain on earth knows where's up and down just because if gravity.
These are one of those moments when you realuze being smart and fit in life actually rewards you with the best things.
I like your comment so I liked it lol. And it's also true what you said

Nah, this is 60% hard work but 40% luck of the draw. Even if you're super fit and a genius, most don't get to go to space. In fact, you'll probably find that most astronauts are average intelligence.

Dude how lucky are these people. So happy for them!
That's why we send People to space.

What were you expecting? People just working every single hour?
You can find enough material about the work and experiments made out there. Obviously, no one will spend a minute watching a guy looking through a microscope and writing in a book.
This is a million times better than regular tennis!
How many tennis balls are lost somewhere in the Zarya module now? C'mon, be honest.
Not many, I would expect. The ball would keep bouncing until, eventually, it shows up somewhere. It would take them entering some sort of tubulation for it to be 'lost'
@@milpy1257 Lost items on ISS tend to end up stuck to one of the inlet vents of the air handling system. As a parent I just laughed at the thought of tennis balls, foam darts, and pieces of jigsaw puzzles underneath all the stowage bags that are on the walls.
assistant "to" the commander hahah
He got told :P
thats a reference to the tv show “the office”

My favorite part is when the racket slows its spinning right before he catches and stops it.
Imagine a tennis ball to float out of the space station as it hurtles towards Earth like a meteor
Nah would disintegrate

Mom i wanna be a astronaut
Mom:why?
So i can play tennis in space
😁
I love watching this tennis match.😊🎾
This looks so much fun. Being an Astronaut isn't work, it's having fun in zero G.
I love seeing them utilize their extra dimensions of orientation in this space sport. I don't see enough of that sort of thing in these ISS videos. Usually everyone's stays oriented in the same direction, even though there is no "up".
Love the interview after the game.. Hilarious 😂👏👏👏
People on earth : people on board ISS are working very hard
Le people onboard ISS:
I love space so much! I am studying hard in school to be an astronomer. All A's and B's so far and I hope to stay this way(not trying to brag). Thanks for the video, love your channel
I wont to be an astronaut toi maby we will see each ather up there
Good for you. The aerospace community has woefully disproportionate gender participation.
If you're going for something like a research astronomer with a PhD, then I wish you the best of luck! If you're looking to work in industry for Lockheed, NASA, Airbus, JPL, etc. and not get a PhD and do research for a living.. then I'm going to give you a little piece of taboo information/advice that you probably won't hear very much: your grades don't matter. You need them to get the degree, to get scholarships if you have them, and to get your first real job or long term internship. That's it. Anybody outside of those circumstances that scrutinizes your grades is looking for the wrong indicators for skill, and you should be wary of the employer. Once you get a meaningful job in your field, your responsibilies there and your bosses references are what you'll use to sell yourself in the future, and that's where you'll get the education you'll use in the real world.
I'm not saying don't get good grades.. but in my experience (from my experiences and witnessing those of my college classmates) they won't do any good at graduation without meaningful work experience.
I didn't like school. I just didn't get on with the undergraduate academic atmosphere. I got lots of bad grades. I was put on acedemic probation. It was a struggle. After graduation, my studious classmates with 4.0GPAs couldn't get a job.. month after month (2 of them enrolled in a PhD programs solely because they could not find employment outside of university work study). I had 4 job offers from govt space physics labs and commercial aerospace companies at graduation (2 of which approached me), because I had spent 5 continuous years working as an engineer/intern for a NASA contactor.
Don't settle for work study. Take the opportunity to take a low wage internship at an impressive company. If you don't have work experience, they'll be reluctant to hire you.. unless you're still a student (because you're cheap). Take advantage of that while you can.
@@BlindWolf187 thank you so much for the information :D
@Jerrin Abraham no its not lmao. You seem to be the fool. Take a quick google search. I can see where that came from though. Prefixes and all

Can I say that, every space video is just soooo wholesome
They can play both above and below the net, awesome!
In maybe a couple of decades a real size tennis court or other fields of sports could be built inside a spaceship and the space sports would be invented. I'm soooooo hyped for it to happen kinda reminds of Galactic Football (if any people even remember or watched that show during childhood-_-)
Nice Having some fun and a New sport in space
This is so fun playing in a low gravity!!
Zero gravity
People: We want to play in space freely.
Gravity: Amn't I a joke to you?
LMAO 😂
i love that the mic actually functions at the interview part
A gravidade é incrível 👏🏻
That spinning racket at the beggining was just... i don't have words.

zero gravity is amazing , stupid question, but is there air in space? or is it pumped into the space station ?
Is that safe with all the exposed circuitry?
Amusing !
