- Homeward Bound premiered on TV3 (now Three) at 7.30pm on Thursday 11 June 1992.
Originally, it was TV3's attempt to secure NZ On Air funding for a local soap; however, it ultimately lost to TVNZ's Shortland Street and was instead transformed into an hour-long drama series comprising 22 episodes.
The series' storylines focused on the personal and professional lives of the extended Johnstone family and the residents of Riverside, a fictional rural town located just south of the Bombay Hills. This town featured a pub with a beer garden, a general store and garage, a community hall, a school, a church, a sawmill and a rubbish tip.
Homeward Bound was produced by Soap (NZ) Ltd, a joint venture between Isambard Productions and Communicado as separate (but now defunct) production companies, for TV3 with funding from NZ On Air. The show screened Thursdays at 7.30pm from June to October 1992.
The theme song was composed by renowned New Zealand musician, Dave Dobbyn.
