I love seeing old equipment still being used. A good quality tool should last several lifetimes. Can't imagine many of the tools made today will be around 90 years later.
My neighbor worked for P&H building overhead cranes for 20 years (he is 73) here in milwaukee wi. I think he has the exact same Welder in his garage, probably brought it home with him when they laid guys off a long time ago. The stories has has shared amaze me. He told me a story that the competition to their crane division had spies at the factory he worked which stole trade secrets/blueprints lol. Anyway great video 👍. Now you need to get a ideal-arc 250 like I have to round out your collection lol.
I just started the video but I want to chime in right quick. Almost 4 years ago now I had a childhood friend stop by and talk for awhile. Hadn't seen him in twenty years. And we visited his grandparents farm. His granny is still alive. His grandfather had a tombstone welder...a lincoln welder sitting in the open barn. Benn sitting there for at least 15 years. No exaggerating at all. You could see where the barn had flooded and where the water level had been on that welder....lead was cracked up and down and so was the earth lead. I plugged it it in and seriously to my surprise that welder came to life. Then I welded with it. But!!!! The switch to change amps was locked up tight!!! But totally serviceable. The old transformer welders are unstoppable...cept for a lack of electronic pixies. Then they useless. Happy welding man!
Kinda neat to see these old machines doing what they were designed to do so many years later. Anthony, you definitely have a real appreciation of welding history and the equipment that was used.
Yeah those old welders are pretty slick. On that one you are actually moving the core in and out of the transformer to adjust the amperage. Just like on the old idealarc 250 Lincolns and the Miller Thunderbolts.
My buddy has an old Lincoln welder he found at the in-laws farm. The body of the welder is made from wood. It was almost completely covered up in the dirt. He dug it out and cleaned it up. And still uses it today.
I'm a bit late to this party but I would like to add my thoughts. I love you're enthusiasm for these older machines, it's aassion I share. Here in the UK 6013/7014 are the staple of the repair welder. I started repairing agricultural, construction machinery and trucks first as a teenager then as a living. I loved gearboxes and welding, so thats what I got bettr at and therefore got asked to do more of. The first welder I bought was a 180amp oil cooled Oxford, ac only and very second hand. Over 40 years and many many different welders later I am retired. Apart from oxy/acetylene, I only have one welder in my home workshop now, that same 180amp Oxford! It still welds better than me. She's still in her original paint and loks as fine as she welds. I put a new set of leads on just after I retired so she'll see me out. Thanks again Anthony, I love your attitude and work ethic. I'm Australian, and 30 years ago we used the 6013 a lot at the Steelworks, because most of the workshop welders were AC, only the Generator welders used outside were DC. So I ran quite a bit of 6013, 7014, and a few 6011. Today I rarely use Stick, I use Mig and Tig nearly every day at work. Both my welders are 415 Volt, three phase, the Mig is a "Lorch" (German made) and the Tig is a "Tokentools", an Australian upgrade of an Everlast (but it is Red instead of Green). We also have 2 Kempii Tigs. Nice to see "Old school" welders that still weld as good as they did in their day.
I love old stuff like this Dude. I have my father in laws old 1983 Century buzzbox. She runs like a tank! I'll have to make some videos with her one of these days for you to check out.
The crank adjustment is common on the old miller thunderbolts too. Basically what you're doing is moving a shunt in and out of a transformer coil to vary the amount of current it can carry to the welding leads. They are a lot more handy than the Lincoln tombstones because of the adjustability you noted. Super smooth running up to 225A on AC. You can get them with DC stage too. I have an old '73 Thunderbolt I rebuilt and added the DC rectifier. I can do up to around 135A DC as well.

Got to get your own shop. You should've hooked a volt meter up to the machine's output to get the open circuit voltage for us.... Sounded like it's pretty high, maybe around 90 or so. Great old welder, you should've used (fresh)6011 and 7018AC rods.
I got one of those old crank type transformer machines and an old-timer told me back in the day they had a guy that always tended the machine and they were called the amp tender you tell him up he'll Crank it up you tell him down for you and they also did all your grinding work and cleaning up your slag that would be IA your apprentice.
I have a Lincoln ac 225 old red tombstone or crackerbox welder and its a indistructable machine for like 500 bucks and under the right hand it can lay some beads here in texas think the tombstone red 225 Lincoln is like everyones first welder but 20 yrs later still running strong ive had mine since i was like 15 so about 17 yrs of owning it so far that machine did sound pretty smooth ive always thought the older machines make alittle more amps then advertized that maybe a cool test to see if the numbers are higher or are they spot on to its output amps
Wicked sick Anthony!! id put money on the welder from the other video being older just cause you had to plug into different holes to adjust your amps which seems older than this one using a potentiometer to adjust amperage. None the less quality video buddy keep em coming!!
No potentiometer moves core up and down to adjust amperage on the transformer I have one that’s also my great grandpas welder but it’s smooth as butter to weld with
I have my great grandfathers Erickson I think. Late thirties I think.. oil cooled... still works. Used to use it alot. Not a very smooth welder and 7018 is a real pain. 4 generation have welded with it...
Now I've always been told maybe I read the package to or something that 70 14 is a lay-flat position a little brother to the 7024. So it's a fast freeze shallow penetration weld/ that a lot of guys use before they had mig welders or wire feeders in production welding. Like 6013 is a shallow penetration vertical up flat and horizontal
I own several old transformer machines with three sockets like this on here. Usually the low amp range had 75 V OC and the high amp range was 50V OC. Try running vertical on the left socket when you use 6013. The idea back the was low hydrogen rods on the high voltage, general rods on the low. Don't discount the worth of a transformer machine and 6013/7014 rods. I wouldn't weld heavy structural with them (though some countries do) but for general fabrication you can't beat the speed and appearance of these rods....worth shopping around, some brands of 13 and 14 really are junk and its how they got a bad rap.....Also try 6011 on this machine!
This machine, like the famous Lincoln “Tombstones”, where designed for rural farm use in the days when many such areas had only recently gotten electricity. Those electric services were typically very light duty, and so the welders were in the 180 amp output range. I’m sure you know it, but for those who don’t, these machines were referred to as “low OCV”, or Open Circuit Voltage machines, which related to the welding output when it wasn’t welding. 20 - 25 volts across the welding circuit in the arc off state was (and still is) much lower than industrial machines, but due to very limited input power in those regions, was all you get out of them! This was a major new source of business in the 1950’s, and Lincoln really capitalized on it , even offering a whole selection of books on arc welded projects that were focused on farm and agriculture shops. All those books and many other older informational books are still available at reasonable cost from the James F. Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation. Pretty interesting glance into the way it was in the 50’s, with some useful info and ideas, though obviously much is far out of date! Cool find Anthony! And, please, lose the F bombs! Keep us posted on what you do with this buzz box in the future!
If you listen to the arc as the arc is terminated; the arc trie to stay lit as the electrode is pulled away, indicating that the open circuit voltage is very respectable! I estimate around 90 volts or so.
My 1940's Forney welder is smooth like that. It loves 7014 but can make just about everything work. I wish I had the need to use it more often. These old AC buzz boxes last forever, weld like butter and are cheap and plentiful
I'd be interested in seeing a deep weld being made in thick material, using acetylene. Mostly because that's all I expect to use in the foreseeable future.
P&H made great welders. It’s hard to find 2 exactly alike. Lots of running changes in their product line. I think you should find more old welders and demonstrate how well they work. A friend and I bought, restored and sold Lincoln Idealarc250 machines for several years. Great stick AC/DC welders. It amazes me that guys will buy a AC225 buzz box for more than they could pick up an older machine like the P& H which is 10 times better
@@martinnorbeck4657 Well I have a Miller Maxstar 140 that was made by Fronius for Miller. It’s about the size of a 4 slice toaster and it runs 7018 Excalibur great. Try and find one of the old Lincoln SAE 300 motor generator torpedo welders. They were all 3 phase and extremely smooth welders that ran in factories and ship yards for decades. I’ve never welded with one but scrapped several out.
Pretty smooth welder from what the video presents. I first learned how to weld on a engine drive p&h 200 that my pops had ,had the set up on the amiture that resembled a old school miller and a wakashaw engine.great video bud. Glad to see you doing good up there 👍
Id bet you she pulls 60-70amp at the wall socket, a beast. Bet its from WWII area. once the transformers warm up they run much better. You can easily transformer it to dc with a 200amp rectifier off amazon..my old 70's craftsman had the same kind of old ass cables. only thing you could add these old timers is a 220 volt fan from ebay to blow on transformer
i just run a micro wave fan off one of the 120 leads no need for 220 fan. i'm adding DC to my old P&H with a choke made from part of an old Forney . open voltage is 53.5 at the bridge rectifier

You should put an amp clamp on each of your welders and see how accurate the machines are and I'd also check voltage see how much that matters

the plug instructions tell how long to cut each wire and how much bare wire to expose to fit in plug with ease

7014 runs very nicely on AC power. I built an entire trailer with 7014 as all we had at the time was an AC buzzbox.

I bought an old P&H welder for $75 about 2 or 3 weeks ago. It just needed new cables and it works great.

The old lincoln tombstone AC only welders were 100 bucks forever. That P&H has copper transformer. Inverters are the new thing I suppose.

6013 is a bitch to weld with that’s why every jobs uses 6010 7018 or 8010 those 3 are the most common welding rods I have used at jobs
