p.s. For more John Candy - - Stripes. A Bill Murray/Harold Ramis classic. John Candy plays a lean, mean fighting machine. I lived in Queens as a kid and I thought we were roughing it with 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13 (PBS). We didn't get cable until the mid-80s. You must have flipped when you saw your first smart TV. I know I did.
When news first came out that the Jamaicans was fielding a bobsled team, I have to admit my teen self chuckled about the whole endeavor. When this came out and I first watched it, my young 20s self finally got the message -- its not the winning, its the participating that counts.
They won a gold medal in a world championship in pushing / starting the bob in 2000 in Monte Carlo. Only the pure starting times counted in this competition.
You'd have been six when the Winter Olympics were held at Calgary in 88. Were you aware of the Olympics then? The Jamaican bob sled team was not the only feel good story from those Games. There was Eddie the Eagle too. There's a movie of that name, has Hugh Jackman and Tarron Eagerton in it.
That scene where John Candy confronts "Kurt" and says that it's wrong to deprive these athletes of the chance to represent their country.... that is why the story of the Jamaican Bobsled Team struck such a chord here in Calgary and throughout the world. Yeah, they weren't that good, but they did it with pride and we here in Calgary absolutely loved these guys. The same is also true of Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards, the British ski jumper who also competed at the Olympics here in Calgary. He finished last but we loved his plucky courage. They also made a movie about him (called "Eddie The Eagle" - please react to it if you haven't already), but alas, unlike this film, it wasn't actually shot in Calgary.
This was the cornerstone of one liners in my school. One time, a kid turned his ankle on the first step going down, and kind of cartwheeled himself down the flight of stairs. We all stood in shock until someone said ‘Sanka, you dead??’ Kid replied ‘yeah, mon.’ It wasn’t full out laughter, but we were chuckling. Kid wasn’t even hurt, except for the turned ankle.
it was based on a true story and I don't know if they've had one all the time since but, I'm 99% sure I saw a Jamaican bobsled at the most recent olympics..
The movie deviated a little from the real events. First of all, there was no animosity among the other countries, in fact, lots of them even offered up help and assistance to the Jamaicans. And as for the crash, it wasn't caused by faulty equipment, but pilot error.
I love this movie. I love the comedy of it, I love John Candy as the coach. I love the idea of a Jamaican bob sled team and the underdog story. I also love the rivalry between Junior and Yul Brenner. Everything about this film is great. For those who have not seen it, I like to recommend it because it shows what a good live-action Disney comedy can be like, unlike what they have been showing on the Disney Channel for years now.
A little fun fact: In 2004 they came to my country (Austria) and joined the "Wok-WM", yeah, they sitting in Woks and they get the 4th place! They came back in 2014 and won the gold medal in the Wok-WM in Berchtesgaden (germany)! You can watch the winning run on youtube! But be careful, "Evil Jared" from Bloodhound Gang was also there and he made party without pants!
Other my God. It's been 30 years since the first time I watched this and it still makes me laugh 😃 It's an absolute pleasure watching you react to this 😄 ❤️
I’m so excited that you saw this movie! Thanks so much for being so awesome. It was so much fun when I first saw it. Even 1% real is good enough for me. It’s very touching and inspirational. I learned from one of your viewers in a comment they left that the crash footage in the movie was actually real footage. Wow!
I think you would also love "Eddie the Eagle" set at the same Olympics and follows the journey of Eddie Edwards competing in the Ski Jumping for Great Britain. It stars Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman 🙂
That’s a really fun movie. The first time I saw it was in a bus in highschool on a school trip to New York, so lots of good memories associated with it.
cool runnings is based off a true story...basically no one ever thought jamaica could have a bobsled team...for obvious reasons...but we were proven wrong.
I never understood the underlying social/racial elements to this story as a kid but I really appreciate the underlying story of under-dog/outcast being accepted
Ray Stewart represented Jamaica in the Seoul Olympics. Of course Ben Johnson won that. This is a true story as far as you can throw it. It was a rust bucket sled, so fell apart. And they qualified again this year.
If you want a great sports film, pn I always found under rated is "Chasing Mavericks" it's a surf film based on a true story and it's an amazing film I wish more people would watch

I am in a car, and I am driving (not while typing, of course. I'm stopped right now lol), but I don't watch, I only listen. The car's screen won't display video anyway

Now checkout ski jumping from the same Olympics with Eddie The Eagle.
Hopefully you'll get around to Spaceballs one day. It has John Candy in it and is a very good parody of the Star Wars movies.
You're welcome??

Ah, grew up with this one. Seen it dozens of times over the last 30 years and it still holds up. Great choice!
Nice
Same. Growing up I watched this one many times
The scene where the bobsled crashes is real footage :-)
Oh really. Didn't know that
@@AwesomeUSMovies Yah man, that's the real footage right there.
I'ts on youtube as well if you want to see the actual runs they did.

Sanka Coffee’s name alway cracks me up! Sanka was the first decaf coffee😂😂
I didn't notice that
I love this movie. This brought me to tears. I was 16 in 1988. i watched this play out in real time, but didn't know this was happening.
I love the "billsled" joke, and I'm glad somebody else caught it.
Really glad you enjoyed this one, dude! This is such a great feel good movie!!
Agreed
It's amazing how well they ended up getting without ever having seen snow
I can’t wait until you watch the John Candy classics “Uncle Buck” and “ The Great Outdoors”. Both are absolutely hilarious.

The only other Sports legend of that stature is the UK's only ski jumper, "Eddie the Eagle."
Same games interestingly.
I don't know anything about that
Not a film about it, but the 2000 games had Eric the Eal a swimmer from Equatorial Guinea who had never swam in a olympic sized pool before the games.
So many great memories tied to this movie, it always add the over all enjoyment of a rewatch.

We all saw the news about this years winter games, I tuned in too just because of this iconic movie
Oh fun
The name Yul Brenner is an inside joke - there was an actor named Yul Brynner who was famous in the 1950s and 1960s primarily.
Oh I had no clue
Also Sanka coffee is a real product
They were amazing to watch in the Olympics such a heartwarming inspiring story to come from the Olympics.
