The 2023 SummerSlam is the upcoming 36th annual SummerSlam professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) and livestreaming event produced by WWE. It will be held for wrestlers from the promotion's Raw and SmackDown brand divisions. The event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan, returning the event to its traditional August slot after the previous year was held in July. This will also be the first SummerSlam to be livestreamed on Binge in Australia. This also marks WWE's first event to be held at Ford Field since WrestleMania 23 in April 2007.

Roman Reigns is reportedly slated to defend the undisputed WWE Universal Championship against Randy Orton at SummerSlam, but if Orton is unable to compete due to injury, WWE reportedly has another plan in place.
According to Meltzer (h/t Subhojeet Mukherjee of Ringside News), there is a backup plan, although it doesn't include Riddle, who is Orton's tag team partner.
Meltzer did not specify who the backup plan involves, but he opined that Seth Rollins, Drew McIntyre, Bobby Lashley and Gunther are among those who could fit as a challenger to Reigns.
While Meltzer was the first to report on the planned Reigns vs. Orton SummerSlam match, Fightful Select (h/t WrestlingInc's Dominic DeAngelo) reported Thursday that there is concern within WWE regarding Orton missing significant time due to a back injury.
Per Fightful, there is "fear" that Orton may need surgery, which would force him to miss the remainder of 2022.
Orton was written off TV last month when he and Riddle dropped the Raw Tag Team Championships to The Usos in a unification match on SmackDown. After the match, The Usos and Reigns brutally attacked RK-Bro.
Riddle was back on television quickly and cut a promo about Orton suffering a back injury and possibly missing an extended period of time, which led to speculation that the beatdown angle was done to set the stage for Reigns vs. Orton down the line.
During Orton's absence, Riddle has continued his feud with The Bloodline, and he is set to challenge Reigns for the title on Friday's episode of SmackDown, representing Reigns' first title defense since unifying the WWE and Universal Championships in a win over
Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 38.

With such an eventful show, where WWE focused on budding tension between multiple rivals, the Reigns vs. Orton match is closer to the undercard than the main event.
There was no face-to-face confrontation or heated brawl. Instead, each WWE Superstar was made to compete in a tune-up match.
Orton went over Sheamus clean in a match that exceeded its stale reputation. Meanwhile, Reigns earned a clumsy disqualification victory over RybAxel.
Outside of a paint-by-the-numbers post-match promo by Reigns, the conflict between these two was not escalated on the most important Raw before SummerSlam.
SummerSlam is a loaded pay-per-view, headlined by what WWE is calling the biggest fight of the summer. Many other feuds have been building over a long-term period of time. Contrasted against an impressive card, the Reigns-Orton feud seems undercooked.
Considering this will be Reigns’ first singles match on pay-per-view, WWE is off to a cold start to the singles career of a potential future world champion.
At one point, Randy Orton’s feud against Roman Reigns rivaled all others as the most physical feud heading into SummerSlam.
Just two weeks ago, Orton’s prolonged beatdown on Reigns was effective in portraying him as a legitimate threat to a rising star, who, to this point, has been presented as virtually unstoppable.
The feud has been fueled by Orton’s rage toward Reigns, who prohibited Orton from accepting a spoon-fed WWE World Heavyweight Championship match on the July 21 episode of Raw.
That segment saw the two WWE Superstars brawl into the crowd before Brock Lesnar accepted the title shot in place of Orton. Orton and Reigns have been at each other’s throats since-with the exception of Monday’s show.
Given the theme of physicality between Orton and Reigns, even limited interaction between the rivals would have helped add momentum to their match ahead of SummerSlam.
Orton and Reigns, however, had no such interaction. As the theme of physicality and personal conflicts spread throughout the SummerSlam buildup, Reignsp and Orton barely acknowledged one another-let alone touch.
