    Wonderful.I spent countless hours on that little footbridge at Havant station around 1960. What memories. Loved the shadow of the loco on the bushes along the way. Thanks.

    Stroke of genius mounting the camera on the front frame. A forward view has always been difficult before now because of the boiler and frames. The snifting valves needed a wisp of steam throughout, got bit noisy en route. Stil dont get why every departure is accompanied by clouds of steam!? That would have been frowned upon in the steam days. A fantastic film with the sounds of steam and shadow play, exhaust effect seen on the tracks. Thanks for editing and sharing - Fav and subscribed

      The clouds of steam are necessary to clear water that has condensed in the cylinders while the loco sat idle. Water does not compress and, if too much has condensed and is not cleared, it could damage the cylinders.

    You must've gained special permission to get your GoPro camera actually mounted on the very front of 45212. I am very impressed. Keep up the good work. :)

    What a great video. Wonderful sounds from the engine, full sense of speed and great views of the track. Also lovely to see the usual people waving at the engine, which they would never think of doing to an ordinary train. Thank you.

    Another beautiful video. The return trip, maybe?

    • @Shoddy127
      @Shoddy127  3 года назад

      Hi Thomas. Yes, this was the start of the return trip. I only videoed to Haslemere as I live local to Portsmouth and the beginnng of the Pompey direct is quite challenging. After Haslemere there's no real significant climbs so not much noise from the loco.
      Thanks for the kind comment too by the way.

    Hi just watching and wandering how you got the engine in the front when the harbour is a dead end? just filming that would have been a sight! again loved it!

      There was a short trip to Salisbury in between and with a diesel at the back of the consist, it allowed the whole train to be turned and face the correct way for the return trip back to London.

      @@Shoddy127 Thanks for explaining! I still wish you had filmed it as you must have come through Fareham where I live! do you have a web site that tells us when you are traveling and when? would love to see and hear for real!

      No, The train went via Havant, nowhere near Fareham. At 15M55s the train takes a right divert at Farlington Railway Triangle, back out to Havant. I used to Live in Portsmouth.
      Given this was a RETURN leg of the run, this video goes back to Hazelemere, which is not accessible from the Eastleigh branch out on to the South East main line to Waterloo. The only place that the Eastleigh branch and the Havant / Petersfield line will meet again via the South East, is at Woking.

      @@valfaulkner648 The train did go through Fareham on the small in between run to Salisbury but both times it was when the diesel was leading. Again, in readiness for the return trip back to London in the evening with 45212 facing the right direction.
      I tried to film the Portsmouth - Salisbury section on last years run but unfortunately the sound didn't come out so I never bothered posting it which was a shame as steam doesn't venture much over the Fareham - Southampton section.
      There was a brilliant site which was very informative and updated frequently but the host unfortunately got ill so it hasn't been updated for sometime however this site is pretty good too:

      @@ChannelReuploads9451 Thanks for the direct reply Brian, I think Val is talking about the short trip to Salisbury which was in between the London - Portsmouth runs.
      We ran from Portsmouth - Fareham - Southampton Central - Romsey - Salisbury (diesel) - Salisbury - Romsey - Southampton Central - Eastleigh (45212) - Eastleigh - Fareham - Portsmouth (diesel) so we did go through Fareham on this part of tour. Having lived in Portsmouth all my life too, I know the area very well as well which is why being support crew for this tour was pretty special.

    Those damned snifting valves!Couldn't he have put her in the drifting position with just a breath of steam on,it would have prevented them from rattling and ensured that the
    Pistons and valves were lubricated,just watched one of your other films with 44871,and I don't think that I heard them once.

    • @Shoddy127
      @Shoddy127  3 года назад

      I understand what your saying Michael but to me it shows they're working correctly and adds to the video. It shows the difference of the engine working and when it's not. Some drivers will drive slightly different to others.
      If you watched the 44871 & The Northern Belle video, look at 18 minutes and 16 seconds ;o)
