YES. Thank you! This brings the castles alive. Most of us may appreciate the history but can only appreciate so many piles of tumbled down rocks. I asked for it & you listened. Impressive
Thank you very good, this was the first castle i visited in Wales, its always been special to me for that reason. Its great to see what it would have looked like in its hayday.
Spent a huge amount of time there. Picnics with friends and family. Great times growing up feeling safe in the community. We would meet up with local lads there for funtimes.💑
Ours, thank you so much, I had always wondered how it night have been, it means a lot to see it this way and just because I can, diolch yn fawr ❤🏴 Like deployed 👍 Edit:- *might
I love your work, any chance you could do a reconstruction on lougher castle, llanelli castle and pontarddulais castle, the latter 2 only the mott and bailey survive but would love to see them as they were 👍
Hey there. I am making a scale model diorama of a medieval castle and I would like to take Ewloe castle for inspiration. Do you maybe have some information on the size of the castle, width of the walls etc? Thanks :)
Truly awesome....I'm currently looking at Buckley/Drury history in relation to all the brickworks, mines. Any virtual projects in relation to Buckley/Drury?
Nice work, but are you sure there really was a gate straight to the fortification with the D-shaped tower? In Bohemia, we have many castles (a bit similar to the Welsh ones) from the 13th century and if they are large enough to have a lower court, then it is the place where the first gate of the castle was. And only from the lower court, could you proceed to the residential tower/fortified palace part.
Yes, the lower court was added later. Ewloe is a strategic puzzle for military historians. It is overlooked by high ground on one side and has multiple gates as you have noticed. It is supposed by some that it was a kind of guerrilla fort right against the English border and never intended to be held against any kind of heavy siege.
Hello there. The keep at Ewloe was a typical Welsh D-tower so the roof shape known from other castle examples. At 1:37 you can make out the pitch of the roof in the stone work. For the materials there is some debate. Possibly lead sheeting, fired clay tile or stone/wood shingle. I have shown shingle as this castle was apparently not expensively dressed or occupied for very long.
There is some conjecture to it's actual function. Ewloe was probably not viable as a defensive stronghold as it's curtain is immediately overlooked by higher ground, especially to the north. It was described at the time in the Chester Plea Rolls as a small keep in dense woodland. A guerrilla base at the Welsh/English border or a hunting lodge for the Welsh Princes have both been posed as possibilities.
Cheers Takeda. You are right, clear ground was usually observed around castles but probably not in this case. Ewloe was probably not viable as a defensive stronghold as it's curtain is immediately overlooked by higher ground to the north so there is some conjecture to it's actual function. Hi Tanana M. This was a test project and was not intended to be uploaded to youtube. I would like to revisit this someday with some historic accuracy changes more info and context.
@@DextraVisual than you for your prompt reply! I tried a google search (from the USA) and was met with terrible results. It's stone, not Motte/Bailey, no apparent village or town wall, small, and probably late... in GB? This is a weird place that I'd like to learn more about!
@@tananam9782 Hi TananaM. The castle is 13th century. It was built on the troubled border between England and Wales and it is doubtful that it was ever intended to withhold any kind of prolonged siege. (overlooked by higher ground). It appears to be a well made skirmish tower built initially as a finger to the English and perhaps a hunting lodge for the Welsh Princes of the period. There are hundreds of small castles and Pele towers in Britain like this.
@@DextraVisual Wasn't there a legal requirement that one must have had the "License to Crenelate"? That is, it doesn't matter how rich you are, you can't build a castle, or make your manor into a castle, unless the King says you can. This was special in England, and helped the King maintain control over the Barons. These little fortifications obviously do exist, and so my understanding of medieval British real property law is must be incomplete. By a long way. What's interesting to me is how small, advanced in architecture, and late, this structure is. How there seems to be no supporting village, how it's not on an especially advantageous spot of topography. It's just so much... "why?" It doesn't make a lot of sense, and I suppose that's what's piqued my interest.
OMG you also included the interior and before and now! Beautiful.
Thank you. I am glad you like it.

Been there but this is an amazing reconstruction and makes me feel less sad about what's left. I now have seen the Castle in all it's glory ! Thanks 😊
This is where my brother and I used to play all the time. It was a truly magical place to a small child.
Tusen takk for at du legger du denne fantastiske serien... 😀 Håper det kommer flere episoder og...
Smallest stone castle I've ever seen, beautiful.
Cheers Can Omer.
There are smaller ones... Have a look at Dolwyddelan in Gwynedd.
Absolutely awesome, incredible, and beautiful all in one. I love the attention to detail. Thank you for sharing!
Just a mile from us although I haven't been there for a few years. Must rectify that soon. Fantastic vid as always.
This is really great work ,i love looking at these images Thank you for posting

Another brilliant reconstruction, the sequence is a natural development from the previous Ewloe scene. I'm really enjoying your work :-)
Thank you matey. :-)
A lovely piece of film. Thank you!
Magnificent rendering of this castle.
Very impressive; nicely done.
I wish it had been restored like this, it would be fantastic!
Excellent graphics
Stunning Martin, outstanding. The trees too! Thanks for the credit.
Cheers Alan :)
This is amazing...
Brilliant, i used to go running around there, great to see it like this
Cheers Aaron. It was running and walking around Wepre that made me want to visualise it for myself.
Brilliant, many thanks
Wonderful, thank you
Well done ... astonishing work!
Loved the vid, will be checking out the rest of your stuff. Keep them coming! Will
Cheers Will. There are several projects currently in development.

Did a 24 castle trip around North Wales last year. This just had to be on that list.
Classic Welsh D shape tower, something unique to native Welsh castles.
cute tiny castle.
Very nice
Been there. Great location in them woods.
It is one of my favourite castles purely because of it's hidden location.
Lovely castle, and a lovely video, lost count the number of times i've been there.
Cheers Henry
Your most welcome, rather amazing.

Cannot remember the book I read it in . Welsh nobility castles are higgledy piggledy. Well captured here
deeply wonderful and beautifully sad.
Excellent! Would love to see Caergwrle castle the same way
Cheers, I have a few other projects on the go at the moment, but Caergwrle is definitely on my to do list.
I would love to see lougher, swansea, kidwelly castles in full glory, your work is amazing👍
I worked a little on the archaeological dig at Caergwrle as a volunteer and would love to see it rendered in 3D.

A shame that the castle cannot be rebuilt to its former glory...
I always thought it would be great to rebuild with a slightly different coloured stone so the original parts could still be identified.

A Buckley Brickworks fly through is indeed at this moment under construction.

Great Reconctruction! did you made on Blender? which programs did you use???
All it takes is a group of 80 men with ladders and a hefty log for the castle to surrender
How do you know about the roofs of the towers

@@DextraVisual Thank you for the answer. Understandable. Your videos are really impressive .
So the castle is in Wales why didn’t you say so?!?

is the interior from Bannerlord 2 Egnine ?
Ewloe Castle position in a hollow with higher adjacent ground doesn’t make sense as projectiles such as catapult can rain down on it.
There is some conjecture to it's actual function. Ewloe was probably not viable as a defensive stronghold as it's curtain is immediately overlooked by higher ground, especially to the north. Where are MACHICOLATIONS?
Ha ha, I'm a big fan of Shad too. No Machicolations at Ewloe. Post holes for defence hoarding are present though.
Möchte ich haben und als neuen Wohnsitz im alten Zustand wie im Film aufbauen.
*Very small; more of a cottage castle.*
very nice but far too many trees :D

Great video of a castle which was built as an act of Welsh defiance against English tyranny 🏴👍
Some historical and geographical context would be helpful.

Ewloe is the stupidest castle l ever saw. It’s actually built in a valley. Edward 1 must have wet himself. He didn’t even bother to lay siege.
