I love Sabbath dearly with Ozzy, with Dio, Gillan, Hughes and Tony Martin. This song sends shivers down my spine every time that intro kicks in I'm taken back to the time I first heard it circa 1994. The sign of the southern cross has the same effect on me. Sabbath is just one of those bands. Dio one of those singers, and the alignment of planets bestowed history with this masterpiece. It's timeless and I've learnt it's pointless trying to have others hear it as you do to the point of a saddened nostalgia and yearning. Enjoy!
I listened to Sign of the Southern Cross with headphones on at full blast in Australia at the top of a 300 foot cliff at Canarvon Gorge while looking at the Southern Cross in the night sky. What an amazing experience...\m/
Exactly! Those two songs are the reason I can't put the one above the other among those two Incredible albums. Heaven and Hell maybe is stronger as a whole, but Southern Cross and Falling off are such personal favourites to me that I can't really decide! There are also other killer songs like mob rules and over and over....

To start, I absolutely loved the imagery you chose for this video. Fit the song perfectly. It's one of my favorite Dio-era Sabbath tracks. I love how it goes from that sweet, gentle opener, into that crushingly heavy, doomy riff that sounds like Godzilla stomping through Tokyo, to the blisteringly frenetic remainder of the song. Such an awesome track.
This may be one of the most heavyweight progressive groovy attacks ever, the sheer labour work on drums and avalanche bassline make me all exhausted when its over.... *damn here comes a tear*

I loved the ozzy line up beat but dio did a hell of a job with Sabbath. Iomi is the metal riff king . And one of the most underrated bass players in the world. The original line up was indisputably the best . Just had space and the time changes were awsome. Incredible musicians awsome band.
Lately i started to appreciate Ronnie not only as a vocalist but as a lyricist - his lyrics are really good! Not only on this song. So archetypical and out-of-tale-like. I Think they're greatly overlooked.

This to me is their last masterpiece album. A legendary band with so many what-ifs in their history. As much as I love the first two Sabbath/Ronnie albums and the two Ozzy/ Randy albums, it's always been a what if for me. I was never a fan of the constant personnel changes and turmoil that occurred in the 80's. I thought it hurt the quality of the music, the image and the mystique. I've always imagined what if Ozzy had never been fired and brought his Blizzard Of Oz ideas to the next album with Sabbath. As much as I respect what Randy did, he's no Tony Iommi. Would Ronnie have taken his Heaven and Hell/Mob Rules ideas to a much earlier version of Dio? I've never heard Ronnie do any of his solo stuff with the Heaven and Hell lineup or do any Sabbath stuff with Dio and I've never heard Ozzy/Sabbath do any Blizzard of Oz stuff together as far as I know. It would be extremely interesting to hear what these sound like in their different forms. But nevertheless I am forever grateful for Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules, Blizzard of Oz, Diary Of A Madman, Holy Diver, The Last In Line and Sacred Heart.
Great comment, but regardless it's Dio's greatest vocal performance and the best sounding Sabbath guitar sound of all, the rig Tony was using on this album is just phenomenal sounding, plus the production. My fave Sabbath album is Sabotage btw.
