The older I get the more I realize that our elders always knew this well, but it's not something you can express with words and really have a child understand. Now we will be the elders.
This is one of the best and emotional music videos. I think I was about 17. I got my grandpa who was in the war to listen to it first. He seemed to like it, strangely. He asked if there was a video for it. Reluctantly I showed it to him. It hit him hard but he appreciated our generation still admired them enough to include it in "new kids music". To show respect. His words. I then later cried because seeing his hard ass cry to a music video I already cried to was just too much. He's gone now. But I think of his cool badass self everyday.
I understand, I lost my Grandfather a long time ago, and I still think of him. He was a part of that generation, and some of his last words to my mother before dying of cancer were: "What was the point to all of this?" He had a much greater right than most to ask that question.
@@tylerp3327 he did say his grandpa appreciated the current generations respect for all that occurred in his generation. There is a level of respect that goes into making these kinda music videos real and powerful too. I think MCR nailed it and I think his grandpa appreciated the realness, even if it brought up hard memories. He asked if there was a video for a reason don't you think? If the man lived to tell his stories and asked to see the music video I would be reluctant too, but id still respect his choice. you dont know how much it could have meant to him, even if it hurt. MCR respected his fight with this music video and I hope thats what he got from it. May he rest in peace. I salute you till I see the grave myself

My brother passed overseas from a landmine in April 2009. A few months later, this video was released and I’ll NEVER forget the first time I watched it. I was crying uncontrollably and now, all these years later, this song and video move me to tears. I was also lucky enough to actually visit Omaha beach where this scene is mirrored from a few years later. Absolutely eerie and a true breathtaking experience. Love you bro and miss u to this day ❤🥺
The pain this song reflects is timeless. Its haunting and horrifically beautiful. Its no wonder this video has comments from the video's release to any "present" year. Shit still hurts to listen to. It's not just a song as you can hear it in Gerard's voice. This is what art is supposed to do. Masterfully done
Fun fact: the scene where Mikey gets killed could only be filmed twice, because it made Gerard break down too much. Same thing with the Weasley twins in Harry Potter.
the worst part about it is that he actually wasn’t acting, and couldn’t bear to see his brother like that despite it only being for the video.. 😔😔 thus they could only do 2 takes bc he was breaking down too much
Legit I did start crying. Because, holy crap I can’t imagine what it feels like to lose a brother or sister. Or hell have to actually watch them as they die. Such a great video.

jesus, i forget the kind of money record labels used to have just lying around to throw at an emo band's THIRD music video to a SINGLE album. the production quality is insane, the number of actors, costumes, it's so polished visually. crazy. different times.
Over a million dollars were spent on the video, which is crazy for the time. Even crazier, though, is that Michael Jackson and Duran Duran were both spending that back in the 80s.
@@heretustay the music industry is utter shit now. Nobody's doing this kinda cool art now. As im in a band rn and all my producers are just telling us to make eps and singles and don't even worry about music videos anymore because its too hard to get discovered. Its just a hard time for bands rn.
@@PixxiePlays oh yeah bud, i know it. currently on band number 4, and the last one we had already transitioned to only doing singles and eps released on spotify and bandcamp because all our listeners were mostly college kids. wouldnt even dream of releasing anything physical w/o support from a label, and even then it's risky. i know we've lost a lot on the way, but the bright i see to the internet music proliferation is that its all just so accessible. it is hard to get noticed, but if someone wants to hear one thing in particular, they can find it. thats pretty cool, i think.
My oldest brother was in the military so like watching this video makes me cry harder than it should, not seeing him for almost 4 years straight and constantly worrying..

Give gerard an Oscar for acting. Though i think he actually made himself believe it happened amd didnt act. Like the behind the scenes he legit screamed his name. That hurt me ouch.
elisavet that’s literally what acting in the highest form is, reacting, if you ever go to a play and maybe some movies where a character breaks down, it’s probably because the actor/actress found something that truly evolved those emotions and built on it.
What hurt me most was when mikey told that his favorite part was dying, G was serious, at some point I thought he would get mad or something, even though we don't know what did he told his brother behind the behind-the-scenes
Tbh I think it should have been added because since there going for the accuracy I'm probs sure that happened at one point in the actual war, friends yelling n crying for them being lost
This song brings people into reality. We all hear the songs about soldiers coming home, all the happy things. This one says what others dont want to believe. Soldiers do die. Soldiers do give their lives for our country. Soldiers do the things others cant do. This song sheds light on the dark side of the world, the side we wish to not believe in. But that side is real. Its sad, yes, but its true. Not all soldiers come home. Some dont make it. Some dont get to come home. Some gave all.
Yeah sometimes it’s happy when soldiers come back I mean some of them get PTSD and that’s terrible. It’s also sad that there are some idiotic people who don’t care that our soldiers died for them. But I agree with you in everything you said up there
Great point and well said! And I feel like the lyrics to this song go beyond dying in combat and really resonates with having ptsd. Because even when soldiers return they are more like shells of who they were before the war and are haunted by the ghosts of war. When you serve with these men and women they become your family and when you lose them horrifically in front of your eyes you become forever haunted by those moments. Once you get out of service all you have is time and that time leads to replaying those moments over and over in your head.
Yes, thats a very good point too. I have a friend, and for them that is true. He is an extremely nice person, but they kind of are like a shell of who they were. So yeah, thanks for bringing that up too!
I know right I cry every time especially when I see Gerard's face at 3:18 it's so sad 😭 this song also makes me think of the break up in a way so that makes me cry even more 😭
I been listening to this for so damn long. I've gone thru every phase in life with this song always touching my spirit in a crazy way. Greatest music video of all time. Especially with the way the world is now. R.i.p. all soldiers of all sides defending their home and loved ones

Thanks Angelica....I came back.....but never really did until recently. People just don’t get it. I pulled numerous deployments cause I kept volunteering, I didn’t know anything else and I didn’t wanna come back unless it was a body bag. I had numerous friends lost overseas that came back in body bags. Lost my best friend the first deployment, grew up together and went through boot camp together, A school and stationed together. People here don’t see what we see, people don’t wanna see it. People don’t understand that we do things we don’t wanna do. We do it anyways....1988-2001 was my time of enlistment. Isn't it crazy how the older we get, the more we appreciate the things we grew up with
Real definition of a fine wine
Why is that crazy?
The older I get the more I realize that our elders always knew this well, but it's not something you can express with words and really have a child understand. Now we will be the elders.
I was never a fan of this band. Never listened to their songs back then. But now im 34. Yeah this would be my favorite MCR song
I have always appreciated art, even when I was more naive and immature. This is beautiful.
But I think of his cool badass self everyday.
they where the greatest generation
How many girls did your grandpa rape? It is very common among male soldiers in war. Especially since they dont get punished for it. Still not gonna respect soldiers. F the military. ASAB

jesus, i forget the kind of money record labels used to have just lying around to throw at an emo band's THIRD music video to a SINGLE album. the production quality is insane, the number of actors, costumes, it's so polished visually. crazy. different times.
Good times
Over a million dollars were spent on the video, which is crazy for the time. Even crazier, though, is that Michael Jackson and Duran Duran were both spending that back in the 80s.
@@croaxleigh fuck. (boomer thought incoming) music industry sure has changed

Well, The Ghost Of You and Wake Me Up When September Ends are similar
