Vanlife Japan Ch 49: Kimono Date 👘
My first REAL date with my Japanese husband! Wearing kimono (着物) in Kyoto is something every foreign tourist dreams of and today we're going on our first kimono date together despite being married and living in Japan together for 3+ years!
In today's Kyoto travel vlog we're giving you an insight into fun Japanese dating culture, walking around the popular tourist destination of Arashiyama and showing you our experience of renting retro kimonos in Japan for the day, as well as eating some traditional Japanese sweets (dango, 団子) in the beautiful eX Cafe.
Even after the Japan lockdown lifted, Kyoto is empty. We were surprised to see the famous bamboo forest in Arashiyama with no crowds. It was a strangely private, but completely unforgettable date experience without any people.

悪いと言ったら、逆に日本人が洋服を着れなくなる・・・

いっぱい着てください。最近よく「外国の方が日本のものを使うのが問題」みたいなことをネット上でたまにみるけど、何が問題なのか全く理解できない。
日本のものを気に入ってくれたら日本人としては光栄、嬉しいですよ

７２歳ですが、子供の頃の記憶で母は毎日着物を着て生活していました。昭和３０年代の頃だと思います。着物は糸をほどいて洗い、長い板に貼り付けて乾かします。それをまた自分で裁縫して元の着物に戻します。これほどエコな生活はないと思います。SDGDなんて今は言いますが昔から日本では当たり前に行われていたことです。どちらの着物もシックで上品でとてもお似合いですね。
奥様の着物姿は最高〜旦那様も素敵過ぎます。いつまでも素敵なご夫婦で居て下さい

I was born in Hiroshima but have have lived in the USA all my life and can speak Japanese but VERY limited on writing and reading 🤔 I'm positive you'll love living in Kansai as FOOD is

*Shamefully realising I'm well over a year late to reply after my initial reply 🫣* Sorry that I apparently missed this until now!? But thank you for the compliments! And if you're still watching our adventures then thank you all the more!! Any Japanese I know is more or less through osmosis and anime 😅😅 nanode my writing and reading is still incredibly poor (though it's definitely gained some traction over the last year or two!). I self-studied basic kanji when I first came here, but I still shamefully require the help of Google sensei when writing any kind of physical paper-based thing (mostly medical, admin type things). I think living with Bear has helped a million-fold, but equally I need to be careful with my keigo and masculine/feminine language when it's not just the two of us (I think his family were very forgiving of my tamego when we first met 😂). ANYWAY! Thank you again, and we definitely had our Kansai food fill and want to go back for more soon!🚐💨

That bamboo forest pathway was beautifully tranquil and all but did you also feel like taking to it with a katana blade like in all the classic video games (or is it just me? :)

Surprisingly! But we did have thermal tops on underneath plus the shawls 😅. The wedding ones were about ten times heavier and hotter though haha

Honestly we were nervous about choosing this rental store because it was the least "big" and only had like 10 Google reviews but I'm so happy we went! It was such good value for money and the owner was SO NICE! It was lovely that everything was all part of her vintage collection and unique too. And you should! It's such a different experience without the crowds. And yes please 💖
