Very good video. Nice to see someone that understands that a little cold doesnt kill the tree. Local species are well adapted to winter regardless of being potted.
Thx Tobias. The one thing to keep in mind though is that roots are normally not exposed to deep frost. So a little protection of the roots is valuable. but often placing it on the ground in a sheltered spot is all that is needed untill temps drop in -10 or colder and/or more permanent cold.
Hey Jelle, thank you for your time today! We made it home safely (after extensive bonsai shopping in two places). I hope I didn't talk you into giving away too many of your cuttings... If you ever drive east your welcome to visit and talk / watch bonsai any time. Lutz
Could you do an approach graft to develop a branch where it's needed on your hornbeam? Just guessing about that because we don't see those in coastal southern California.
Hi John, in theory, yes, that would be possible. I am not a big fan of grafting however and whenever possible I hope for nature to give me what is needed!
Hey Mandy, I would recommend going for an off-the shelf winterspray. They are sold as horticultural oils or dormant sprays. (extension.unr.edu/publication.aspx?PubID=3029)
I use neem oil with little dishwashing soup and Luke warm water when I have pests on my trees true the year. You think this would be a good winter spray?
Yeah, I did not. Because it is not "one thing" being used. I did a quick googly, and came up with this site that explains a little more: extension.unr.edu/publication.aspx?PubID=3029. What I use is just a commercial off-the-shelf product.
Some very good advice, i like the idea of having that mesh over the base of the trees. What oil do you use /recommend with the soap for bugs ? Thank you
Hi Tas, i use a regular, commercially available, winterwash for my trees. Would not know what is i. it. I just got it from a garden centre to be honest!
Thanks for the clear walkthrough. What sort of steps would you take if it _were_ to get as cold as -20? (Asks an American who sees -30C every so often.)
I would take the same steps, but I would use a wintershelter. Even here, where temps typically stay much higher, many of my friends have their shed of garage as dedicated bonsai storage are!
Hey Jelle. I read that aplying wire in winter can cause harm to the the branches, so i never wired branches in late autumn. Have you ever experienced dieback of wired branches after the domancy? Thanks for your nice explanations. Keep on growing 💪
Hi Hendrik, yeah if you wire them late this can happen. I have seen it on an oak and on a hornbeam in my garden. Now that I wire out around leaf drop, I have no more problems. Bear in mind, I live in a country with a gentle climate.
I really enjoyed virtually sitting next to you and observing your work. Very deep and helpful stuff! Is there any spray for squirrels? They keep tipping over my trees and pots!
I would say, this is only acceptable if you collect them, and roast them with almonds? But, seriously, I could not actively hurt squirrels. Fortunately, I do not have to. I so far do not have a problem with rodents thanks to some active predators in my yard (Except for a fieldmouse every once in a while... :)
@@GrowingBonsai of course it’s out the question hurting them… and yet!!! 🤬 I saw one getting down a tree, walk on my fence, climb down, hide a acorn in my apple tree pot, and go back… the following morning 3 trees where tipped over…
Have you ever used lime sulphur for a winter wash? Will you do the same wash again at the end of winter / beginning of spring? Great video as usual Jelle. Thank you for sharing mate
Yes and yes ;). I ave used limesulphur but it bleaches the bark too much for me. Some of my trees have nearly black bark! An early spring application, just as buds are swelling I do do if I think about it, the weather is nice enought and I have the time. So 50-50 ;)
Hi Jelle ! I was working in a botanical garden in my country and recently got some cuttings of Populus yunannensis, what are you thoughts about this particular gender ? By the way your videos are great pieces of advice and nicely done !
Hey Kheriga, thank you so much for the nice words! As for your question.. If I am completely honest my first thoughts were.. Gotta google that species. So.. I guess the honest answer is: I would not know about the species. The gender (DId you mean genus?) Populus I have seen used as bonsai, but I have never tried them. So.. I am afraid I would jst be making stuff up or googling to give you recommendations, which I think is not what you are after..
@@GrowingBonsai Thanks for your answer. I meant genus yes... bad translation from me sorry ! I will try to make them as a bonsai following many of your advices and we'll see where this goes. It can't go wrong I'm sure of it ! Sadly it will take at least 10 years to get something since these are just cuttings...That's exciting !

Thank you so much! I do hope it helps; Especially in the beginning cutting back branches can be nervewrecking!

Hey there. Hope you had fun today. Did you get some trees from a field too?
@@GrowingBonsai Yes we did. Two black Pines and made reservations for a Yew.
Great video Jelle another masterclass 👌
Masterclass even! You make me blush!
A greta viddeo that lets us all know whaat we should be doing with our deciduous trees now. Thanks :)
Very welcome my friend! Hope it helps. In the end, everybody needs to draw their own plan! Do not do it because I do!
Thank you Jelle!!
youre very welcome!
Nice work and great advice on preparing for winter. Thanks, keep growing
Thank you so much Matt! I hope it helps!
Your videos just keep getting better every time you make a new one. Keep up the good work.
Ohw, thank you so much! Learning how to youtube has been a bit of a roller coaster the last 10 months, I admit!
Excellent stuff, great rationale in your pruning decisions and, of course the little quips and understated humour that make your videos unique.
Glad you enjoyed it. But me, humor? Quips? Na, must be someone else you are thinking about. Humor does not run in my family ;)

Great video Jelle. Thank you for sharing your process. It helps watching as you explain why you are doing it.
Great to hear! It is a bit of an effort to include all diffenet angles though!
Small world that you wear a fleece that says Bury, Greater Manchester, which I am not far from! Your videos are brilliant BTW!
:) A few years ago a big bonsai show was held in Bury, and I helped Tony during the weekend. thank you!
So glad I found this channel! Keep up the quality videos. Love it!
Thanks! Will do! Feel free to have a browse and / or binge-watch all there is on the channel :)
Great video Jelle, this is the first I’d heard of winter oil and I’ll get some. Many thanks 👍
Originally from biological gardening, I think it comes!

Good video, though I prefer to do major pruning during early to mid summer
Hi Juan, major pruning indeed during the growing season. This is kust regular maintenance and development. No big cuts.
I use neem oil with little dishwashing soup and Luke warm water when I have pests on my trees true the year. You think this would be a good winter spray?
Sounds like a good recipe

Is the use of neem oil the same as winterspray?

ich glaube leute verwenden (auch) neem ol fur winterspray, ja
I have read that you should not wire maples in autumn / winter due to branches being brittle , just prune to shape ?
Hi John, indeed, as the tree goes ever more dormant, the branches het more stiff. So wiring as leaves drop is the latest
Super video, maar wat is het samenstelling van winter olie wat is dat voor spul? Of is al video over gemaakt🙂
Hi Lena, dit is een product dat veel buitenwinkels, zoals welkoop, kant en klaar verkopen!

No! And, as far as I think to know, one should not. The combination is potentially harmfull.

Stefano, I’ve found a 22 caliber lead spray to be quite helpful with the squirrels. 😂
