I have 2 females. A blue and Chacoan. My blue girl was hatched Aug 30 , 2021. She is getting very fiesty and used to be my buddy. She has started tail whipping me.
The Chacoan is new and is getting an attitude now. The Chacoan was hatched Aug, 19, 2021. I thought it was too soon for guberty for both.
    Any thoughts?
Mine are from Rose City Reptiles. I was thinking of getting a 3rd male high black. But the girls seem good together and I don't want baby tegus. Even adding a 3rd girl concerns me.
Where do you get your frozen mice? I looked online they are so expensive!

Since I got my two, male mid March 2021 and my red female June 2021 as babies I did not brumate them winter 2021 into 2022. I think they mature faster if they don't go down for the brumatiion period. Both my tegus went through a shift in personality at 10 months old. My back and white got over it but my red female is feisty, very fast movements, lives to flaunt herself infront of the male and would nip me given the chance. She should grow out of this if she's like me male tegu. Just keep picking them up, talking to them, holding them but be alert not to get bit. When I pick up my tegus I always automatically pick them up under the front legs and tend to grab onto their fat part of their tail. I allow their tail to go between my waist and my are. If I don't support them this way, they get un-nerved and flop their tail around because they feel off balance. This is more for Mac as he's bigger by about a foot.
Also, I don't always treat mine like they are fragile or I'm going to show them a bad experience I f they are acting poorly. If they get squirmy or act spoiled while I'm handeling them I will handled them with more authority and show them I'm not a pushover.
Mine tend to respond to the tone of my voice. Loud or soft. When Mac acts up I raise my voice and he looks at me and will sometimes tame his actions down. When they see me come in they will also change their behavior like a child that can think.
Sassy when I hold her I tend to put a big towel in my lap. If sassy acts up I can warp her up in the towel or pull it over her head. Also, try grabbing their tail firmly right behind the rear legs as this tends to make my tegus feel a more secure and settles mine down. More the male than my smaller females but does have an affect on both.
Also you can grab them pretty firmly behind the head and see what affect that has getting to settle them down or can try pinning their front and rear legs back to their body to show your dominance abd ability to limit their movement. Try those things a d see what you think. I will hold my red female where she will be super squirmy and I have to secure her front legs and rear legs because her nails will shred my skin. I allow her to flex and bend her body but she tires out pretty quickly and will relax.
I bought my frozen rodents from Rodent Pro and the bags 20-25 larger mice-rates are between $35-45. I bought 3 bags and was about $130.00. Yes, expensive but the whole food is very essential for them. Just something I'll have to buy throughout the years. Im going to have to place a new order in about a week. Mac needs bigger rats now.like medium sized. Rats are better for tegus because they are less fatty. Baby chicks or young frozen will do too and might be less expensive. Chicken hearts and chicken livers are cheap from some grocery stores and you can lightly brown the chicken livers in the microwave for 10-15 sec to firm them up and make less squishy. Feeding them tends to settle them down some but don't over feed. A thinner tegu is better than an over weight tegu. Feed every day different things but feed less to top them off/snacks.
