After taking out my snowblower the first time this season I could see it wasn't working as well as normal. How to adjust Belts on Cub Cadet Snow blower.
So far the auger cable spring have broken twice. The propeller shear bolts break once a storm and the holes get elongated and the propeller backlash gets out of control over time. Best performance improvement is to get rid of the cub cadet and buy a Ariens big two stage. If you can't fix these things on the go you're in deep trouble.

Here in Connecticut I have two driveways to do on a wide state road where the snow left by plows is daunting. The latest breakage is stripping the auger cable pulley adjusting bolts. Turns out all they are, two sheet metal screws that go through two layers of sheet metal. That not only hold the adjusting fixture but hold the engine base sheet metal together as well. My fault for stripping them but if I didn't have to change the broken auger cable spring so often that surely would have helped. Meanwhile my old 35 year old Noma that's been used and abused, no problem. This is not your grandfathers Cub Cadet in my view.
Thank you for the suggestions to tighten the belts up. It was useful. But as an engineer I have to tell you that belts do not stretch; they wear. And Unless someone has a trained eye or carefully inspects the contact points on the belt. Only then will you begin to see the wear. Personally, if I saw the belts were that worn. I would not have made the adjustments I would have simply replaced the belts. Also I did an impeller modification by installing rubber belting To cover the gap between the snow blower and peller and the housing. It functions much better. But I agree with thecommenters in that the snow blower is fully incapable of blowing more than about thirty feet. Even with brand new belts that are properly adjusted. Because of the gap between the tip of the snow blower impeller and the housing. The second reason why they are incapable is because the engine simply do not deliver enough torque. But the Cub cadet works. Satisfactorily for me satisfactorily for my needs here in maryland with our limited snowfalls. There would be no way I would own a cup cadet in Canada. It would gravely or ariens, Or honda if they still make combustion engine driven snowblowers. Of course the best is to get a four by four Pick up truck with a snow plow! Cub cadets don't blow snow very far at all no matter what you do. It's the way they are. I've talked with a couple dealers and they have confirmed this. I had one. A 2x 30" with a big engine on it all the power in the world but doesn't throw more than 20 feet. My uncle has a 3x 30" same thing. I bought a different brand and that thing throws snow like you wouldn't believe. At LEAST 50 feet pretty much no matter what kind of snow. Light, wet heavy, slush, it throws it all. Do your research people before you buy.
Yes, defiantly do your research before buying. The dealer that I buy all my outdoor power equipment from, sell Honda, Troy Bilt, Cub Cadet and Toro snow blowers. I sure wasn't going to spend 4000 for a Honda, so I bought a Toro 1232 Power Max HD that blows wet heavy snow 50 feet and the drier stuff closer to 60 feet. Very impressed with this machine. Like you said, do your research before buying.

Other machines Such as gravely, Honda, And Better ariens Machines seem to have solved the problem. The belts on my. Top cadet machine are adjusted and new. Then I installed snow snow blower. Impeller extenders to cover the gap between the steel snow blower impeller and the housing. And still the most it will throw snow is about twenty five feet. If I lived in a cold climate area, such as the northern parts of the u. S or canada I would never own a cub cadet. But Here in the mid-atlantic states we don't get a lot of snow. And the cub cadet works fine. It's also a cheaper machine in terms of selling price compared to the better quality ones. The bottom line is you can't expect a cup cadet to be a premium machine. Because it's not design that way.

Is there no cable adjuster towards the handle end of the cable? That's where mine are. If the cable gets too slack and you run out of adjustment, just tie a simple knot in the cable to shorten it. Much easier and cheaper than changing belts.

Yikes, I guess I’ve been fortunate then! I only broke my sheer pins once when my blower ingested a heavy duty extension cord buried under the snow.

4" is for a shovel, 16" is for a snowblower

I did the impeller mod and mine throws pretty good and doesn't get clogged in the wet snow.
