Heather has such a beautiful voice. When I hear some of the over-hyped popular female singers on television referred to as "amazing" or "legendary" (you know the type; weak voices, auto-tune or miming), I sometimes get annoyed, but at other times I just laugh. Having recently seen wonderful singer-songwriters such as Heather Nova, Natalie Merchant, Rhiannon Giddens, Suzanne Vega, Beth Orton, Jasmine Rodgers and Judie Tzuke sing live, it really puts things in perspective!
I don't think that there is less talent, How could it? But the generation of singers you have mentioned honed their skills by playing live in countless venues. It seems that there are much fewer places where aspiring singer/songwriter can perform their art. Hence, they are not getting better. Malcolm Gladwell makes the point that the Beatles would have never become the Beatles if not for their Hamburg experience where they played for hours day-in day out. When they returned to England they were something else.
I didn't actually say there was less talent; it is just much more difficult for real talent to become well known, as it is so easy to package a pretty face with a weak voice and make them sound OK. I was also making the point that so many of the 'product' singers are hyped as "legendary/amazing", and the masses believe it because they don't hear, or bother searching, for anything else. Happily it is easier for a young artist to get their music heard now, but it just won't get mainstream airplay. There are loads of talented young singer-songwriters around (such as Eliza Shaddad and Rachel Sermanni), but you have to do a bit of searching to find them (I 'discovered' those two by chance, one was a support act at a gig, and the other I found on RUclips).
Don't forget Anna Termheim. ;) Saw her live in Hamburg/Germany. Heather Nova as well. Really good. The live version is even better than the studio version in many cases. I like your list of singer songwriter! It's similar to my CD collection. Maybe you listen to Anna and discover a new favourite singer.
One of my new favorites. I love the way she lets her voice float over the music. And listen to the drums...he's playing with soft mallets. So cool. Imagine yourself floating on a raft with your love, looking at the stars, while this plays...
