I love doing this. What you are actually doing is transferring your thoughts from the analytical logical left side of your brain to the right side. Mastering this shift can give you unlimited possibilities for creativity. I used to teach a class on this and it was wonderful to see what students were able to do using this technique.
Thank you for encouraging and showing how us how to re-use/re-cycle items we already have to make beautiful cards. I like your idea of using a cut out area to take a look at how the page can be used as a background. An other idea is to fussy cut an image out of a magazine or card and make that your main focus. Or part of your image.
I agree, it's a great idea. Before throwing away a magazine, I flip it to see if I like any image, use as a background, or can die-cut from it a flower, a leaf or whatever. Many times, if it's really good, I copy it on a piece of cardstock to fit the thickness of the card itself. It's great for absolute beginners who do not have much DSP or stamps or dies to try and decide if cardmaking is their favorite thing to do.
I have done this with a conservation magazine we get every month. There are lots of birds, lake and forest scenes, and insects. They make great masculine cards. I like your tip of using a template to visualize what to cut. Thank you.
Your creativity is boundless. I’ve resolved (again!) not to buy any more craft stuff in 2025 and to try to be a bit more sustainable in what I use for crafting. This idea is just perfect, and a great way to use some of my glossy ‘Country Life’ magazines

Another great resource to cut up that I use, is old photos. Back in the day (pre digital) we use to get "doubles". I have an unlimited supply of scenery to cut up. ha ha Also..inside of some business envelopes have a really nice pattern. I use them for 'guy' cards. :D
Great cards Natasha. Interesting timing I just finished going through a couple of magazines and an old calendar cutting out pieces and pages to use in my journal.
I have wallpaper from wallpaper display books, old clothing pattern envelopes, old photos reprinted, and some of my own completed adult colored pages in my stash. Never thought about using calendars as one person suggested!
Being fairly new to crafting I was wondering where the boundaries lie when crafting larger layouts. I will be cutting out more words instead of die cutting letters. Thanks for the lesson.

OMG . . . this would work with patterned paper too! I struggle using it too. I will be cutting templates forthwith!
