I'm new to ancients so I could be totally wrong but that Alexander tet might be a posthumous issue, maybe from ptolemy I in Egypt. I actually think that that would make it more interesting since there are a huge number of lifetime issues for Colin Farrell...err...I mean Alexander. You should have a look at the list of posthumous issues and see if you recognise the die pattern. I'm pretty sure the ptolemy I coins are worth more anyhow.
I started on ebay. Buying from sellers with %99.9 positive feedback and with over 500 transactions who only deal in ancients with a guarantee of authenticity and return policy. You can find coins for 1/2 the price or lower of what they would traditionally go for in a coin shop, on ebay. Although, the coin shop would be much safer in terms of finding something authentic if you're new.
Hey! I have a nice ancient collection as well, and have been taking quite the long hiatus, as other hobbies have become more important to me. That first Greek bronze you showed may be a Phillip II (father to Alexander the Great), this coin does have Zeus on the obverse and Philip mounted on horseback on the reverse. Check it out on Google or something and see what you think!
you can tell by weight, patina, strike, size, and other known specimens to compare them to. After you handle a few hundred, it gets fairly simple to spot the fakes. Although, there are some that may slip passed you every once in a while. I have been collecting for 5 years and I have 4 confirmed fakes I have purchased thinking they were authentic. Not bad 4 out of 500.
Luckily for us, there were billions of coins minted from 700 BC to AD 600 for us to choose from. A great percentage of which were preserved very well. Ancients are relatively cheap compared to the US coin market. Mainly because the demand is not as high. Although, I see it rising considerably; even in the last 5 years. I used to get a decent Antoninus Pius Denarius on Ebay for 20-25 USD. Same coin is now going for 35-40 USD.
wow ,,some nice coins there,,really like the alexandra 3rd,,not sure what you paid,,,but the age and history behind these great coins,,you would think they would be of a real great value,,,you must have a nice collection
Nice coins. Curious what camera and setup you used to capture this, I've been looking for camera/setups to take and store pictures of my coins, and the quality of your vid is amazing, picks up all the coin detail.
I should really wait to comment until the video is over, lol @ my derp. I've also got one of these Syracuse bronze coins, very similar dark olive patina and condition, love yours. Also, as far as phonetics go: 'sestertius' = "sister-shus" , 'drachm' = "dram (as in Hoover Dam)" same goes for 'tetradrachm' (4-drachms) and 'decadrachm'
Excuse me, where did you get those??? One of the coins that you showed, I saw one on a documentary. The channel is called: PSB. (The Colusseum)) You can watch it. video.pbs.org/video/2365423149/
I know this is not too important or whatsoever, but when a coin is from BC for example, you say 800 BC. but if its from AD for example, then you say AD 800. So AD is pronounced before the number
The "Zeus" bronze piece you attributed wrong. The head is of Apollo not Zeus, and the back shows youth riding on horseback. The coin is from the reign of Philip II of Macedon, father of Alexander the Great.
great stuff, I ned help ID's some ancient coins. I thnk mine are fake, I have an Alexander the 3rd too, I thought is was Celt Danube Valley, which would have been Macedonia....

Lovely coins!
Great coins. Thank you.
Hi, regarding one of your coins I believe the Sestertius or Sesterce is commonly pronounced ses-ter-sus. Plural = Sestercii (ses-ter-see).
How can you be sure that you don't get fakes when buying that type of coin? I always wanted some like that but am afraid of losing.
Buy from reputable dealers, research how to spot fakes, research what real coins look like and you're set
Where do u get cheap ancient coin?

That coin is worth nearly triple that. Also, it's hard to trust a muslim.
