Incredible Bill, now I know what they mean when they say put up a “long wire” antenna. Making the drone footage to give the likes of me the chance to see it was a brilliant idea so thanks for posting the video. 73’s M7ESD

I had a 550' XL loop up ~50' that was clearly the best HF antenna I ever had. Tried various baluns and feed lines. The Open wire with a real balanced tuner is pure gold. Now I have more room with very tall trees and a Drone. Need me some XXL action!

I was wondering what output power you were running here....I loved my 160m loop when I had it up...great antenna even with only 100W out. We have moved from ZS to CT and I have space for an 80m loop, which I will erect in the next little while after procuring some spiderbeam masts. Ideally I would like to erect a 320m loop sometime, just to see how it performs. I love me a loop skywire! This has given me a good idea already. Thanks for the video, have fun and 73 de CT7/ZR1XZ

Always interested to learn about large loops. I found my loop of over 600 feet installed only about 10 feet high could receive trans-Pacific BCB stations on medium wave on the west coast of Canada. A great video would be for you to simply slowly scan across several different bands to show off the very low noise floor and the signals you can receive. VA1CQ

WOW I want one of those made many loops over the years a hard antenna to beat almost every time but that thing is a monster! I had a loop once about 450 feet long up about 60 feet over a grass field was a square shape fed with 450 ohm ladder line right into the house into the tuner. Worked great on all bands and had a very quiet receive great job on that antenna.

Hi Bill, I just heard you on 7.165 and thought I'd check out this massive loop that you're using. I'm sat on my driveway in Marlborough Wiltshire using my FT-817 in the car with a Moonraker whip. Unfortunately the original FT-817 doesn't transmit above 7.1 MHz as it's stuck with the old band UK limits, or I would've call back to you. Perhaps I'll hear you one day when I can come back to you. Regards, Ian, G4XVW.

Thanks for posting this video William. Is route you chose, so that the wire didn't go over any buildings and be adversely affected by their ground plane? I ask because I'm thinking of similar project which ideally would go over a barn and stables with a steel roof and am wondering if this will have an adverse effect.

Not necessarily. At my contest QTH there's +100kW of solar panels installed and the QRM they generate is absolutely zero. Could hardly believe it myself. But it's a professional installation using SMA inverters, very well grounded and completely silent.
