Russia had larger population and larger territory - in fact, one can argue, that German gains were fastest and largest IN USSR until Germans themselves run out of steam.

So complete was the slaughter that every citizen in Rome was said to have had family members, friends, or acquaintances who fell in the fighting and an an ordinance was passed outlawing public weeping as a desperate measure to shore up morale. In just 20 months Hannibal had butchered one-fifth of Rome's entire pre-war population of adult males in a series of stunning battlefield victories. Yet for all that the Romans just raised more armies and refused to admit defeat, even pressing slaves into military service to fill manpower gaps, and Hannibal was no closer to winning the war. Very important detail about the german casualties not mentioned: It is 20% of the total invasion force, but of that invasion force around 50% were actual combat personal with the rest filling supporting, non combat roles. So 20% in total means around 40% of actual combat troops, which is a redicilously high amount for the germans considering the war so far. The actual combat strenght of the Wehrmacht at this point has gone down to approximatly half the invasion force if we include material loses. And the german army would never in the entire remaining war be able to replace those loses properly. Operation barbarossa in 1941 broke the combat potential of the Wehrmacht for the rest of the war. The germans would play catch up to their strengh for the rest of it.
If you look at the division readiness table between June 1941 and March 1942 the quality of German divisions is quite contrasting. In 1941 most of the German divisions were suited for all operations whereas the number by March is less than 10. Further most divisions were suited for only defensive operations. The sheer amount of attrition and ferocity of fighting just sapped the Wehrmacht to the bone.
The German economy needed most of those troops back in the factories after a few months. Instead, 20% are dead and the remaining 80% are thoroughly tied up
WWI, the previous war, had 51% of german army as casualties. 20% for one campaign is a bit easy for those who thought in WWI terms - even if it was bad for germany.

Kinda sad you didn't mention the Red Square parade that happened on November 7th. Here in Russia at least it's treated as a *very big deal*, being a show of bravery, resilience and resolve (are those the right words to use in English?) of the Soviet people, as the troops from that parade went straight to the frontlines. November 7th is also one of the Days of Military Honour
Except that the "animation" is just recycled pre-rendered cutscene from their log-in screen intro from 5 years ago lmao. That's far from how the game actually looks.
17:20 holy shit, at first I was a bit sceptic on how it would look like but after seeing that small preview (especially the moment it went from the black and white footage to 3D) I'm 100% on board (no pun intended) with this. Very HYPED for 7 December 2020, a date which will live in fame.
As a citizen of the “Gibraltar of the East” and living in Japan, I’m looking forward to your December 7th’ special. Thank you for your ceaseless effort in fleshing out history of WWII as it happened!
On November 3, 1941, the Royal Navy battleship *_HMS Prince of Wales_* and her destroyer escort are currently well on route to Cape Town, South Africa for refueling before her ultimate destination to Singapore to join up with the battlecruiser *_HMS Repulse_* . The aircraft carrier *_HMS Indomitable_* that was supposed to meet up with them however, runs aground off Jamaica this day and will need to make a detour to Norfolk, Virginia for repairs. This delay may prove risky for *_HMS Prince of Wales_* with the potential lack of air cover now.
....and her destruction will become the nail in the coffin for the battleship and show for once and for all that the Axis and Allied powers had been wasting resources on building more of them all this time. Though they will STILL continue to make that mistake even after this for some reason.
It was analytical, in a way Hitler's speeches tended not to be. Its general tenor was that the Germans were not as powerful as they were often presented as being. By early November 1941, Stalin was pretty confident the Germans would not make it as far as Moscow and the descending winter would halt them.

In the Great War series there was a sub series called “Out of the Ethers”, so as the siege of Odessa is still not far from now in the past I would like to share a story I was actually expecting to be highlighted in the regular episode, just in case if similar department will be in the future on this channel. Since the Soviet forces besieged in Odessa experienced a lack of armor, they had to be inventive. So they used a little manufacturer gear left in the city after the evacuation of factories to convert agricultural tractors into tanks. They were putting armored hulls on the tractor chassis and using turrets from t-26 tanks with small caliber guns and machine guns. 69 pieces of these combat tractors were built. Their role was crucial in deterring of the Romanian forces for more than 2 months, which gave enough time for the evacuation from Odessa to Crimea. Some pieces of these improvised tanks were captured by Romanians and used by them later during the war, since they didn’t have much armor of their own.
That's still happening today. Look at some of the makeshift "armored" technicals used in Libya and Syria during the recent unpleasentness there. If it has wheels and runs, they'll slap sheet steel and an MG on it and send it out hoping for the best.
This is the kind of thing we do for "Across the Airwaves",, the WW2 equivalent of Out of the Ether, but can you flesh it out some more? I didn't come across this story so I don't know more detail. Do you know any good sources on it? Thanks for writing it in too.
I'm not exactly too bothered by the attack on Pearl Harbor as FDR said it would be the day that lives in infamy and everybody knows about the attack, and there's more stuff about it than probably anything else from the World Wars. So I'm way more interested in all the other attacks on the European possession in South East Asia, because like most people I know absolutely nothing about them. The 7th of December is remembered nearly solely for Pearl Harbor. So personally I'm way more excited for learning about all the other attacks by the Japanese on the 7th. Don't know why I said this but you know, I'm just saying
It's a good point that I hope people keep bringing up throughout the next several months. Japan never planned for or thought they were going to completely defeat the United States, just knock them back a bit and force a settlement. As Indy said in the episode here, their main concern was having a potentially hostile US Navy on their flanks while invading the European colonies in the south - that was always their primary reason for starting this mess, their need for resources to continue their dominance of the region. Their battles in the Dutch East Indies, Thailand, Burma, etc... were way more important during 1941-42, before the US fully ramped up their efforts and defending against their attacks became Japan's primary concern.
While it is true that there are other aspects of the Second World War that is not as well known or covered, it is one of the more important events of the war. At this point the war in Europe and Japan's war in China are entirely separate conflicts. The attack on Pearl Harbor and simultaneous offensive moves elsewhere by Japan in the Pacific transform those two separate, regional conflicts into a single, global war.
At 14:00 + Stalin: ''if they want a war with USSR they will get it". And the Germans got their wish. Thank you, (to the host), for being reasonably honest about the history of WW2. Stalin is accused of many bad things. However he is the Leader, that saved the Word from, by some, adorable Adolf and Nazi fascism. And in my book: The good Stalin has done, outweighed the bad he has done. Let the God of Abraham be the final judge. With love from Canada.
Hello from Ukraine, I have a question: guys why didn't you mention The Red Square parade of November the 7th? I think it was unprecedented action from soviet people, taking into accout what was happening on battlefields, and how close were German troops from Moscow. Besides, big thak you for the great quality content.

As someone who plays world of warships, collaborating with wargaming I think is an excellent decision. I can’t wait to see how the livestream turns out and hope it’s successful because then we can maybe get other historic battles/events portrayed to us through the games too. Imagine seeing the battles of Midway, Philippine Sea, Leyte Gulf and using World of Tanks, the battle of Kursk, the largest tank battle in history. There’s probably other battles they could portray but they’re the big ones I can think off of the top of my head.

I just read the speech of Stalin. For all the bad things one has to say about him, this was a very good speech. Showing deep insight. Inspiring, encouraging and in my opinion honest. (Though the figures are a little off and losses are downplayed for encouragement purposes). He gives the people a good perspective and solid reasons for his fate in the future outcome. Something to believe in. I think one of the most underestimated powers is the power of honesty . Stalin uses that power here.
What about the October revolution prarade in Moscow, when the troops from Siberia passed through Moscow while going to the front? Maybe you want to surprise us with a special about that?
I have PTO time to use before the end of the year so I took off work December 7th to be able to watch your Pearl Harbor video that day. Really looking forward to it.
When Indy said "I'm just gonna say best documentary" it was transcribed as "I'm also on Discord" Now that's not the kind of error a speech to text program usually makes with those syllables, but having been right after asking us to Ring the Bell Icon" its EXACTLY the kind of mistake an exhausted manual transcriber would make after a hundred videos ending with Discord and Twitch appeals. So thank you for your service exhausted manual transcriber. You may have missed that bit, but the rest comes out great.
Its main armament and rather weak - quite a few were destroyed by Soviet tanks like the T-26 which had a 45mm gun, or by 45mm anti-tank guns. By the end of 1942 the Panzer II was generally removed from frontline service. It was too lightly armed and armoured to survive on the Eastern Front.
@Dan Gurău The T-26 was the best tank of the Spanish Civil War, although it was prone to mechanical breakdown. Even in 1941 it could still be formidable if kept working and competently handled, which was often not the case.
As someone who has played wargaming games for years, I honestly have began disliking the company for not listening to their community and the bad direction they have began taking their games, HOWEVER! I really have to give them props where it's due, and that is for Wargaming keeping history alive.
I never cease to be amazed at how often and quickly the Red Army is able to replenish its losses. Any other country would be doomed after suffering just one of those defeats but the Russians almost always seem to find men from somewhere when needed. Also, I know it's named after the Tank, but Operation Crusader might not be the best name for an offensive in North Africa... I must say, I cannot wait to see the Pearl Harbour documentary. Looks absolutely brilliant so far. I might have to actually pay for something on World of Warships instead of playing it for free...
You also have to consider that this was not a regular war but an extermination project, a struggle for survival, it's no surprise that they gave everything they got.
Man this is getting better and better, i honestly wish that you guys are getting funded really well. This should be a full on tv documentary, this is even better than tv shows
Not possible Pearl Harbor is protected by range from any air attack. Plus it’s not even possible to attack a fleet in a harbour the water is too shallow for torpedos
Wise words. You never know exactly what you are dealing with on either side, but if you go through at least one planning cycle, you know a lot more. And everyone in the command structure who have been forced to send in answers to questions know more than before, too.
Always great when the channel I’ve been invested in for the better part of a decade combines forces with the game I’ve been invested in for the better part of a decade.
yeah, it's unfortunate, there's that famous speech by Stalin as the troops march from the red square to the front line and also the somewhat catchy Moscow Defender's Song (highly recommend the Red Army Choir version)
Possibly due to a lot happening this week and the Moscow parade, as a propaganda exercise/display of strength, takes a back seat to actual military preparations taking place.
@@OriginalRAB I personally feel like this show of strength was an important happening in thr battle of Moscow. I mean it did not only was just an ordinary parade. It was a message that the red army hadn't been defeated yet and it was a huge morale boost for the defenders. Even if they couldn't cover it detailed, with the numbers and stuff, they could have atleast said that something like this had happened.
2:59 They were wrong by "only" 81 divisions (the Soviets had 241 divisions in the front in November 1st according to their own reports) and 40 brigades (the Soviets had 80 brigades in November 1st according to their own reports). So, if we consider a brigade as roughly half to a division, the Germans estimated 180 division equivalents whereas the Soviets had 281 division equivalents, which means that the Soviets had 156% the strength that the Germans though they had.
Might also be important to note that German divisions and Soviet Divisions are not comparable, similarly with the brigades, as German formations were larger than their Soviet counterparts. This may be confusing German intelligence gathering and their comprehension of enemy force.
Add to this - in USSR was a bit rascist, they did not have many Central Asians and other nationalities in Red Army before war - it was overwhelmingly Russian, Ukrainain and White Russian. Now they start drafting the others - but that led the Red Army into a problem of languages and poor intercommunication, besides being oh so green troops.
@@tommy-er6hh Well, most of the population of the USSR were Russian, Ukrainian and Belarussian, your point is? Plus before the war the USSR was demobilised, and many of those that you said hadn't started drafting were reservists.

Casualties tend to be heaviest in the infantry in all wars, and it was the best infantry and Panzer units that had the most casualties.

This Stalin's speech is really badass. "The present war is a war of engines." - said he.

Oh wow. I wonder if Bovington has been able to acquire any of these.
The Dan Carlin episodes on this are good
There's a channel which covers all the Japanese "Blitzkrieg". Singapur, Borneo, Bali, Darwin, etc. I don't remember its name.
[Spoilers] (but well, everyone knows that already)
7 December, 1941:
Japanese: Tora! Tora! Tora!
Soviets: URAH! *URAH! URRAAAHHHH!!!!!*

I was 11 when this started for the US. I am learning history now every day. Thank you very much.
You're welcome!
You completely omitted The Red Army Parade on November 7, 1941 which had an immense influence on Soviet morale
Hmmm, is that Bonaparte on the wall looking over Andy's shoulder while he recounts the German campaign in Russia?!
Indy: Ihr Bruder?

Indy: Ihr Sohn?

OK
Those graphics, combined with real footage, looks epic!
One of the most bad-ass speeches of all times.
This show is like the morning newspaper for me on a Saturday morning. I love the show. Keep it up 👍
Just a question aren't the Soviet divisions smaller then German divisions?
yes a lot smaller
A typical German division was 15-20.000 men. A Soviet should be ideally also something like 12-24.000 men, but in reality in 1941 it was often 3-6.000 men. In coming years the situation will near to the German
@@ДанилаОгородов However, a few days of heavy fighting could drastically diminish divisions in any army, whatever their establishment at the start.
Wow, very cool! Thank your for announcement of the December 7th movie! It starts at 11am according to my lat and long, so will get coffee for sure! Thanks again!
Am I the only one who is seriously contemplating calling in “sick“ on December seventh to watch the entire five hours?
I am amazed anyone still has a job or isn't in some kind of lockdown.
I have to go to school on that day☹️
I can’t believe I didn’t notice this before...but did you actually get Nolan Ryan and Robin Ventura autograph that picture?? That is epic!
Napoleon in the background: pathetic! I made it to Moscow
He came, he saw it on fire, abandoned and he got no surrender, his army was destroyed on the retreat.
@@davidbrennan660 that's further than Hitler
The best World War 2 history channel by far. Thank you guys!
You're welcome!
8:30 Panzer II had 20mm autocannon; panzer I was mg only.
@Marcelo Henrique Soares da Silva Not by the wehrmacht.
litteraly getting goosebumps hearing you talking about the pearl harbor project..
ill be taking that day off work so i wont miss a second of the action!
also thanks for showing the clocks from around the world. rather helpfull.
Congratulations you made me feel like a monster. I'm actually looking forward to the attack on Pearl Harbour.
I. Am. So. Excited. About. The. Pearl. Harbour. Episode.
This channel is a gift to the world. Thank you for all your work.
I hope the wargaming stuff works great so you guys could consider the same for a D-Day, or a Kursk special.
Or operation Bagration
I also wish to thank the entire TimeGhost crew for in producing such informative content. It is obvious that you do a lot of research.
I also wish to thank Wargaming because even though they might already have all the ships and airplanes modeled, they are in essence providing a couple of hours of individualized computer simulations for the Pearl Harbor special and that is very generous of them.
14:58 but... but.. THAT'S STILL A SPOILER *starts crying*
not really, Indy has reported for a few weeks that the Japanese are planning an attack on Pearl Harbor. While the Americans don't know it is coming, it has been telegraphed for us viewers about as much as Operation Barbarossa was last June.
@@bludfyre But it's not set in stone. I mean, diplomacy could still win and save the two nations from war, right? *makes childishly naiive face*
Thank you Indy and team! - You guys are awesome and i thank you from the bottom of my heart, this series and all others i have watched from you, have been eye openers, i've learned so much more of our recent history from you than i ever did from school.
You're welcome!
