The manouche style rhythm chording is called "la pompe." It describes the precise style of syncopated left hand damping techniques. Like most really distinctive rhythms, it's a feel that you have to get or it sounds off. I get the sense that this cat has listened to Django a lot, but hardly anyone else.
Great vid. Im an ok guitarist, but have never messed round with these chord properly till now. This is the first vid that showed me the shapes, a basic rythym and got me flying into the 40's really quick! Cheers guys!
Hi - appreciate the email - the written voiceings are correct - they show the full chord if you want to play all the strings - this video the instructor is playing mainly using the E A D and sometimes G strings - but the voiceings are correct - take care and keep on rocking! David T
i really dig that rhythm you played at the beginning, sometimes it sounds like all downstrums other times i think i hear muted chucks on the upstrums. sounds awesome
Actually the strings used on the guitar in this lesson are Argentine strings, they are not nylon - they are copper wound silver plated strings that give that authentic manouche sound take care and rock oN! David T

within the minor keyd songs there are alot of 6th chords.many 9th chords.the major chords often consist of 6/9 chords .go to the dcmusicschool.youll learn alot.get hono winterstein volume.2 on there.youll learn almost every gypsy jazz chord.
@QueenToKingOfSpades i did not say that because of the headstock, it actually sounds a lot like my galicia nylon spain, i do listen to a lot of music, also i've been playing guitar/bass/piano for almost 10 years now, and im currently in 6 different groups of music. you should not mistake a doubt for anything else regarding music. best wishes!
Great video! Django is the shit. I don't know about the long fretting nails and the overuse of the baseball grip though. Your teacher would hit your hand with a switch! :)

Its a modern copy of a Selmer guitar. A Google search while show you lots of different makers of this type of guitar. Gitane and Dupont are two such companies. There is a wide range in prices, ranging from around $500-600 up to several thousand for handmade models from luthiers. Good luck in your search.

It's always okay to play the notes of the chords. So you can be sure that the notes of your solo are always fitting. There is no exact overall scale to what he has all played. But the nearest summed up scale would be A minor (natural, harmonic and melodic) sorry for my english I'am not a native
@snackeater45 Try stochelo rosenberg for starters, and leigh jackson is pretty famous on youtube. But also try songs: Dark eyes, minor swing those are nice. Also djangofest is where many gypsy jazz players gather, there's plenty of footage of them playing on youtube
Well, I'm sure that the long lineages of Manouche guitar players and teachers would have a bit of a problem with that. The predominant chords used in the style are two and three finger chords that use the thumb in the root position. The preference for these particular fingerings come, at least in part from the legacy of Django, who only had that many to work with. It may seem silly to base an entire fingering system on the legacy of a man with a damaged hand, but come on, he was Django.

One thing I learned long ago is not to emulate the styles of famous guitarists. You have to make your own way, but don't hurt yourself in the process, that's all I'm saying. And a "teacher" that suggests a style that can hurt you physically, or at least your playing, isn't a very good one IMO. BTW: there's not a lot of video on Django but he doesn't use a baseball grip except for to fret with his thumb: /watch?v=fzz6fAdFFis /watch?v=ooYmovGaFQU&feature=BFa&list=RD02v0VfkBBUqwM

thk's so much !
does that guitar has nylon strings?
If by baseball grip you refer to the thumb over the top, that is almost universal in Manouche style chording.
forgive my ignorance but i have never known much theory. what is the four chord?
@QueenToKingOfSpades i think it does have nylon strings indeed
What kind of scale would you use to solo over this?
It's always okay to play the notes of the chords. So you can be sure that the notes of your solo are always fitting. There is no exact overall scale to what he has all played. But the nearest summed up scale would be A minor (natural, harmonic and melodic) sorry for my english I'am not a native
+Odracir R D dorian would sound pretty awesome, also if you did an A minor pentatonic it would add a bluesy vibe too.
Thats a serious work out....!
What kind of guitar is that?
what type of guitar is that like an acoustic but with classical strings?
They are called selmer guitars, look up gypsy jazz guitars
The chord from around the 10:00 is in fact the Bm7b5 or B half-diminished.
Hi - no, the strings on the guitar are not nylon - they are Argentine strings
rock oN!
David T
o.O
What on earth was that very very last chord you played??
thanks

What are the main gipsy chords?
Oh my God!! Clint Eastwood is a genius with his guitar!! XD
I want to meet this dude.
