I was at church with my mother & sister . My dad was home watching football. The pastor told everybody get home quickly & safely. We went outside
And it was pitch black. The ash was coming down heavily. People who turned on their windshield wipers scratched their windshields. My dad was a Deputy Sheriff. All deputies were called in. All the towns & cities worked together. We shoveled peoples driveways & roofs. All the city & county vehicles & equipment needed new engines do to the ash. Radiators and heat pumps were clogged up. There was no looting or rioting. All people worked together.

1987 I was a teenager up on the mountain and we could see life coming back to the area. A very surreal moment. The devastation was unreal. Trees uprooted out of the ground, Spirit lake full of timber.

Diego, thank you for the very nice video! 😀It's a very personal take on the event. I understand my comments come some time after the original posting. I stumbled on your channel a few months back and started 'catching up' on your videos. I enjoy your building videos and those with Al. This one hits different for me. I was an 18 year old HS senior living in a small logging community (Wishkah, WA) on May 18th, 1980. Like Al, I remember that morning. We learned from the TV of the eruption and to expect ash, etc. Soon after the skies darkened and it began raining "mud". The mud continued to fall for a about an hour, until the ash cloud (which had moved NW) moved toward the east. I remember cursing the mud as I washed my car many times in the next week. My family also collected ash, keeping a small vial of it. Your video brings back memories! Thanks! Keep up the videos. I look forward your next wood shed video.

Strange your friend talked about not being able to hear the eruption. I was sitting waiting for a bus in Auburn Washington (quite a ways away)I could HEAR that bloody mountain roar. Since my son was in the red zone at the time camping with his cub scout troop, it really freaked me out. It's ironic, I can look out my front window and see that mountain.
Question: Why does everyone celebrate Harry Truman and not even mention David Johnston, the geologist who was doing his job observing and taking measurements when the mountain killed him? Just asking.....

I live in western new york. I was watching it on TV. The next day I went in labor. Had son the 20th. Yes, long labor. Was told I would have to stay 3 days longer in hospital. Because of the possibility of ash fall because of the rain.

This is a very true example how mother nature rules and we as people living amongst it must work with her because you will never win against her. Awesome video Diego

    Phenomenal video.
I loved hearing about the history and experience of everyday people that lived through the eruption.
Maybe consider a part 2, 3, etc. That way we could hear some of the experiences of the ones that you interviewed.

My mom's friend Mary lived there, lost her home. She moved back to our hometown, ash grove mo. Her van quit running so I tried working on it, the air breather was full of fine ash, the brake drums were packed with ash, when you got that ash on you it was like powdered graphite, strangest thing I've seen. I rebuilt half her van,
    Thanks for doing this video

I remember watching the news when Mount st Helens Blew. I just can't imagine the fear of those close when it blew, And those that lost their homes how devastating. I was 22 years old when it blew. This was a extremely interesting video and part of history, Epic documentation and interviews. I love history. Thank you Diego.
