This was my first church home. My grandparents were members, and with my parents, I attended Sunday School here as a small child. I still remember the love and peace I felt, entering the church building. I loved the sunshine and sheltering wisteria of the enclosed garden area between the church and the adjacent Sunday School during warm weather, and the warmth of the fireplace in the colder months. The church and Sunday School perfectly expressed strong, clear, comforting teachings of Christian Science. (I believe that the Sunday School building was not designed by Maybeck, but was designed and built some years following the opening of the Maybeck church. It beautifully echoes Maybeck's vision and design.) Later, in my 20's, I returned to Berkeley to attend UCB, and had the great privilege of membership there, attending both weekly Sunday services and Wednesday evening meetings.
Beautiful. I live in the UK but I would love to visit the church sometime. Even though I’d heard about the church I didn’t imagine it would be so beautiful.
I have a house of the era about four blocks away that is now being renovated. I walk past this church on the way to Sunday service in a church of a rather different style, brutalist. Both are inspiring, although there are those who beg to differ. :)
Can a film about a creator ever hope to touch the heart of things? This film does it, in its unpretentiousness and focus not only on Maybeck but his co-creators- - the women who insisted on a spirituality that looked neither up nor down. Just one more example of what makes me so proud to be a part of Berkeley. Kudos to the commentators, the film makers, and those who made it possible.
I was raised as a Christian Scientist, and still consider it the purest, truest, and most honorable Christian religion; The religion that embodies and teaches the most basic yet important principles of Christianity (when no other Christian religion does). I'm also an avid fan of architecture, and many of the Christian Science Churches had the most beautiful architectural designs. Sad that many are not being saved.
I would like to attend Sunday and Wednesday nights services, perhaps Christmas week of this year. I live in Wilmington, DE and was raised up in Christian Science in Washingto DC
I live in Wilmington DE and would be traveling alone as my wife is of a different religion, My father was a first reader for a church in Washington DC which building was torn down. The lot was encompassed by Congress. DOB 9-19-38.
I LOVE THE LARGE AUSTIN PIPE ORGAN INSTALLED IN YEAR 1953. I WAS ORGANIST IN THE LATE SIXTIES. I AM SEARCHING FOR A LARGE COLORED PRINT OF THE ORGAN. PLEASE ADVISE AS TO WHOM I CAN PURCHASE COPY OF THIS MAGNIFICANT AUSTIN ORGAN OF 3 MANUALS/39 RANKS. THANX RICHARD

What does science have to do with Christians or healing? Where can I find teachings like that in the Bible ?

A fascinating church! I was a substitute organist here in 1981. Thanks for sharing this wonderful history!

A wonderfully executed and elegant documentary on Bernard Maybeck's masterpiece.
The most beautiful building in Berkeley, CA.
Beautifully presented. Good work, folks! I'm so happy to be a small part of the preservation of this unique place!
We were married there in January 2018 -- it was absolutely extraordinary. What a beautiful, solemn, serious space.

Christianity isn’t a religion and that denomination is a defined cult.
Thank you for creating such a compelling and beautiful piece. The camera work and story flow so well.
Beautiful building.
Very nicely produced documentary on the history of an impressive building.
This is fine piece work - kudos to Paul Bockhorst. There was a crying need for this... and then he appeared!
Really exceptionally done - both images and narration. Congratulations!

No one seems to mention the strong influence of french art deco influence evident everywhere.
Wonderfully informative piece ... thanks!
I love it. There are many beautiful CS churches. There is a big old CS church in downtown Columbus Oh that is beautiful but sits vacant and empty.
