    I wrote 9 months ago concerning the list of chords (or at least the availability to switch between the new "descriptive chord navigation" and a simple list of chords by generic roman numerals.
    This is what it says in the response: "1. Yes, I agree. I think we can bring back the list of chords - but with a better user interface. It's on our todo list and I'm planning to get that done.". I'm sure it got lost on the to-do list, but hopefully not forgotten, right? I still can't use the Epic versions due to this one feature (I can navigate for 15 minutes and fail to quickly stumble on what I can use - versus a simple generic vi-V-ii-I-iii or something, that follows my music composing ear. If the crafty rhythms could somehow magically dovetail perfectly with a certain set of chords, that would be a first of its kind. I'm not sure its possible. The conventional ways (such as by feel your sound, Tracktion waveform, Cubase, Studio One) is more to isolate the rhythm, or keep the melody and harmony calculated separately. But when "chords" are defined with the main chord tones but also with passing tones, often choosing a chord progression will conflict with a rhythm. Having a generic list of progressions with mainly chord tones prevents the conflicts, or if choosing a chord with extensions one can see where it is in the chord progression (i.e. 3rd of 4 chords) and go right in and fix the disharmonious extension, improve its voice leading, etc. I'm saying all this in context of auditioning. I do realize that if one has something committed it is easy to invest in fixing it - but that's not the point of auditioning.

      I wish they put them back as well

    • @jesussaddle
      @jesussaddle 2 года назад +2

      I agree - and I want to learn how to handle Custom Chords, but I think should be 2 separate functions. One function to ask Captain Chords to create a new voicing of a new typed chord name. The other function to leave the notes alone, but accept a new root (from the existing notes). For instance if the progression I'm given has an Am7, and I want it to be thought of as a C6 (which should definitely change the way Captain Deep understands it). When I try to fix a bad chord progression or follow a good bass line once I manage to get a good chord progression, its necessary that the program can handle my changing (correcting) the chord root. For instance, if the progression has a few chords that are intended as having different roots - I literally had an A Major followed by a D Maj7. Epic thought the D Maj7 should be a type of A chord with a Sus. So the bass lines being generated seemed off, and when I tried to change the "A" to a "D" the program interpreted that as my asking it to give me a new voicing of a new D chord. There needs to be a feature to simply leave the notes the same but correct the root. (Roots of chords are not the lowest note of chords. The root of the chords that make up a song can sometimes be determined by notes played by more than one instrument. So this ability to simply leave the notes the same and correct the root needs to be added - the sooner its added the sooner this program will rocket in sales volume. I think Scaler 2 will have some serous competition but this issue makes it frustrating and a bust for going beyond super tame progressions.

    • @mixedinkey
      @mixedinkey  2 года назад +3

      Hey guys, we're adding Strum back in shortly - it's already in beta-testing and it works. The change to the "Epic" engine required a rewrite of some of our algorithms because everything needed to be improved to handle the more sophisticated "pianistic" chords that appeared in Epic. Because of that, Space/Strum/Swing are all coming back with a new UI design. And, as a few people mentioned, it would be nice to bring back the "List of possible chord progressions". We have a pretty good idea on how to make it look nicer and less "busy" visually. It's in the queue, although it'll take a while to get it done since there are other things in front of it

      @@mixedinkey - I just want to chime in my opinion here. For me adding those chord progressions back is really needed - I don't really understand why the new list, by genre, was done. I think the original list was sort of "foolproof" type of progs. The new progs require choice and change and it makes me go back to FL Studio's piano roll. The list in Captain 5 was helpful in that most of the stuff I would do was already there in the list.

      Make one the relative major and the other the relative minor. So Am and C major for example. Or D major and Bm. You can do this with modes also. Also try a higher melody in the chorus, the bridge to the chorus can have the melody climbing up to get ready for it. And finally, try changing the rate of chord changes, e.g. one per bar to two per bar.

  • @jesussaddle
    @jesussaddle 2 года назад +4

    Firstly, is there a way to use the old versions with the new versions, as I saw in several tutorials?
    Next, there are 4 things that I think should be going on from a first impression (excuse me if these are all available already bcuz I didn't get thru the videos on Epic yet. (My eyes aren't the best, so when I watch tutorials I can't always see what's happening.)
    1) There really should be access to that old list of chords - it can be useful and should be added to, not eliminated. (This same thing applies to the old bass rhythms [ Edit, actually for the most part I think in Deep the names are the same or similar but it is missing in Capt'n Chords]
    (The helpful nature of a tree hierarchy becomes a hindrance when you can't see the whole hierarchy but can only see the top level. Whereas with the chord progress, or those clever names along several pages the names serve to become familiar. Both approaches have their advantage.
    2) I find immediately that there should be a "move playhead to cursor (modified by snap-to-grid behavior of current setting perhaps, or possibly more effectively simply snapping to the nearest bar or half bar). I know this is in conflict with the function of following the DAW playhead. XLN Audio's XO for example, solves this by letting the user de-couple the vst (disable the tempo sync so that tempo is handled internally in the vst. I assumed that would be in Epic, but I'm not seeing it. Having that option would be essential to composing, since when composing beyond one's skills on an instrument, I think one typically needs to audition 1-2 bars or less at a time - and Epic is now requiring to cycle the whole progression (unless there's a loop narrowing feature - like setting loop markers in the DAW - I don't see that.
    2a) When I am previewing the music I've written and I double click to add a note while zoomed in, it adds the note, but unzooms me and I have to scroll back to where I was to continue editing-auditioning.
    3) There should be an "audio preview of note clicked on" feature very definitely as well.
    (I'm in Captain Deep at the moment, and I don't think there's a way to raise./lower velocity of individual notes - maybe that feature is there or coming soon? Its actually of lesser importance than other things, since I could always edit the velocity of the bass notes in the DAW as MIDI. Composing the notes of the chords and the notes of the bass are more important than there velocities for me.)
    4) I'm pretty sure this is already possible, but I've got Captain Chords linked to Captain Deep, and when I fix the octaves of the chords to match the new sound I've chosen, Deep thinks its supposed to follow the octave, whereas I already had been satisfied with the octave that Deep was playing at. I'm not seeing a lock button to prevent that (I don't think it applies the other way around, so I don't think a lock button is needed in Captain Chords, but it seems necessary in Deep). Is there some way to keep the bass from following the changes to chord octaves?
    (I believe there used to be a way to back up work. The idea is that, suppose I'm doing some chords and adding a bit of arrpeggio idea to one bar. Lets say I then apply some different rhythm Ideas. If I don't export the idea into the DAW, I can't revert to the original idea when I realize that applying some particular rhythm deletes the arpeggio (It can be a bit unpredictable if you don't know the rhythm until after you select it. ) It would be nice to have undo levels, or simple the old way where every time you get happy with something you just save the preset. )
    Good work Mixed In Key! I will let you know my other thoughts but I'm glad you're plowing forward. I actually spent quite a bit on Tracktion Waveform 9 or 10 when they first introduced a Chord track and similar features to captain deep and so forth. However you guys kept developing whereas they seem to have chosen abandonment (although I acknowledge that they probably were busy trying to equal the Studio One stuff which includes audio as well as MIDI - can't knock 'em cuz that's ridiculously complicated). From what I can tell, Studio One's chord track feature, in terms of MIDI, is still very clunky - we need you guys to excel in this particular niche, so keep going!

      Hey, I am really sorry about the lack of reply on this. I think your comment got stuck in our RUclips "auto-moderation" queue for no apparent reason, and I didn't read it until now. Thankfully, it didn't get lost completely, and it's published now (plus we turned off that auto-moderation feature on RUclips, because it randomly hid some comments that it shouldn't have. my apologies!!)
      To answer your feedback publicly:
      1. Yes, I agree. I think we can bring back the list of chords - but with a better user interface. It's on our todo list and I'm planning to get that done.
      2. You're right on this. We've been experimenting with that feature for about a month now, and I think we're getting somewhere with it. We already tried at least 3 or 4 different ways to sync with the DAW and what you're describing is likely the best option.
      2a. Is this on Windows or Mac? I tried on Windows and it seemed to be OK.
      3. You're right. There is one on Captain Melody (on Windows, at least) but not on Chords. I'm surprised, we'll add that in. I think Velocity just got re-added in a recent build, so that should be available now.
      4. I am not sure it's possible to prevent Captain Deep from reacting to Chords in such a specific way, but the idea to "lock notes" in Chords and Deep has been suggested a few times. We're considering it.
      Thank you for all your feedback. It's awesome. And sorry again for the delay - RUclips's comment algorithm totally broke on our channel. -Yakov

      @@mixedinkey On 2a actually I am in WIndows. Keep in mind that the playhead is rolling when I do this. I don't think it is an issue when the playhead (DAW playback) isn't rolling.
      I really appreciate your getting back to me. I'm not in any rush, your answers were great. But one thing, could you please respond to my issue above (a separate comment I left a day or so later) regarding the issue of when Epic or the original version of Captain Chords assigns the wrong chord, and by using Custom Chord feature, and changing the name of the chord, it triggers Captain chords to put in its own version of those notes. In other words, its unpredictable in this case - where you as the user have the right notes, but Captain Chords just has a wrong name (e.g. the track is basically using Am7 but Captain Chords wants it to be a C6 - sorry for that basic example - the real issue that was proving such a problem was dealing with a case where it had assigned A Maj 11 when I was building the track around that chord being a DMaj7. (Deep, being instructed that it is an A, emphasizes the major 3rd of A (C#), which was a dissonant Maj7 tone of the D Maj7, which has a P5 of D, that wants to resolve to D, and a Major third (F#.) that is the Maj 6 degree of A, and acts as a root (being a P5 down) of C#, the 3rd of A. Bass players don't get enough credit. Making proper bass lines and sensing the more proper chord tone rootings is a highly advanced subject when verbalized. Bass players build this sense of language around it - it should be possible for Captain Chords and Captain Deep to emulate that skill, but its important to let the user correct a mis-perception. It won't affect pop music build strictly on triads, but it will affect soul music, gospel music, hip hop, blues, jazz, etc.

    Hey Andy, I have to ask this (actually anyone can reply if they know an answer), I have been using this program since it's first version and something that is driving me absolutely crazy because of my lack of music theory is why the second row of chords in Captain Chords displays chords that are NOT in the key I have selected, I realize that these chord "suggestions" are to swap your currently selected chord with a variation, however is there a way to turn off all chords that contain notes that are NOT in my current key ? For instance in CC I pick Am and then the second row gives a swap choice of Amaj ?!!! I mean, I can't use any of the second row chords at this point because I don't know how many sour notes each chord contains. I really would rather know what chord alternatives and "safe"; ones that will add complexity, but stay in my selected key, this has been driving me absolutely crazy for 3 years and I find myself using EX Keys2 more since it only gives alternatives in your current key.

Quick question: in CC Epic, is there a song section option like in Captain chords 5 with intro, verse, prechorus, chorus, bridge, drop??? --- I know all the sections approach is a little more singer songwriter -- but its coming back in RnB, neo soul etc.....only 3 or 4 chords is maybe getting -- or will be -- not enough or even lazy ? :-)

    I find it very strange that there are so many midi chord plugins on the market, yet no one seems to be doing anything with AI behind the scenes.
    To me, this one is just like all the others. What would actually be useful is if someone made something like Steinberg chord track into a midi plugin.
    THAT'S how you write lightning fast chord progressions on e.g. a bus ride home with a laptop and no midi keyboard.
    Because - after you choose your initial chord, Steinberg give you a choice of chords for the next chord that actually FITS. Then the next one will easily fit and follow on from the second. It's not just giving a bunch of chords one can play in a scale, it's actually MUSICAL. I am not really explaining it properly and it has to be used to really be understood. It's an actual ASSISTANT. The other plugins are just so simple that you can't create those beautiful non typical progressions like you can with Steinberg.
    Seriously, buy Cubase elements for $99 (and less when on sale), it will work out so much cheaper and do absolutely everything that all these plugins do but a lot better.
    The beauty is that the cheapest cubase has the full chord track features, so even if you don't want to use it as a DAW, just create your chords and export as midi file, DONE.

    • @mixedinkey
      @mixedinkey  Год назад

      There are big differences between them, but at the end of the day they work together. You can use Captain Chords together with Pilot Melody and Pilot Arpeggio. In our view, Captain is more like Photoshop that gives you lots of control over the big canvas where you can edit the MIDI notes and use lots of tools. Pilot is more like an analog synthesizer where you tweak knobs and get great melodies as a result. It's a new category of instrument because this has never existed before... I guess we'd call it a "knob-to-MIDI" workflow :)

Not to mention some of them turns them into melodies and erases some of the chords. I guess I gotta lock them maybe? It's honestly more screwed up than before. It ran pretty smooth before Epic. Why don't these type of plugins come with common chord progressions? OMG and when I change the lengths of the chords it adds a completely new chord. Yeah I'm out. Gonna try Scaler 2 I got it for iOS and at least that has some common chord progressions. Seriously go listen to some of your own presets and tell me they're good. Like David Bennett puts out videos called common chord progressions and they're so common that they should all be in there yet all we get are these bunk progressions no one uses. Some of the presets don't even make rhythmic sense.

    I need your help Andy. I'm lost. The Captain Chords Epic plugin decided to name all of 3 bars of a four bar progression as the chord A Major 13 or something like this. I went back to a file I had backed up in my DAW. But it still thinks the 1st 3 half notes are an A Major chord. The 2nd half note is D, F#, C#, F#. To my mind this is a D Maj7., not an A Major. (I see how it jumped to calling it an A Maj13 now - I guess). My goal here is to somehow get the correct chords listed so that the bass line fits the chord harmony better. Since D (the actual chord) conflicts with the function of an A Major Chord (I know there is a D and there is a C sharp, so maybe the program is thinking this is some sort of A 11th, the intervals relative to A are the 11th, the Major 3rd, and 2 occurrences of 13th, but since there's no A here it is wrong to build the harmony as being A- if it were a momentary Sus function it would normally have the interval 5 half steps above the root, but momentarily omit the interval 4 half steps above the root, it wouldn't have both, AND omit the root (in this case it has been assumed by the program to be an A - I hope I'm making sense although I know this is pretty deep - I'll contact tech support :D.). In early versions of Captain Chord I think the Custom Chords feature didn't "follow the chords" that well. But hopefully that is resolved. The problem though now, is that when I try to split the 2nd half note from the 1st and the third, it changes the chord (and if I make a custom chord it also changes the chord, which is ALSO what I need help understanding. My thought was that Custom chords could be used to fix these times when the Captain Chords program is doing something strange (because in the past couple of days I've seen it do this, and it affected the bass line in a not so great way. But I don't want to change the chord notes, I want to keep the chord notes and change the name, so that it produces a better bass line. Is that possible? Cheers!

Once the key is found, I usually open Captain Chords set to the same key, and start clicking [+] to add new chords. I click around the Magic Buttons at the top of the screen to hear what different chords sound like, and I pick something I like. Once my chord progression sounds interesting, I apply different rhythms to it, and play around with different basslines to find a good choice as well. Omg then after it screws up all my chords from changing the length I discovered that when you draw a note it doesn't remember the length of the last note you selected so you have to go in and shorten the length manually. That's basic functionality what is this amateur hour? Was this plugin built by non professional musicians? As in people who don't even play music professionally? Thanks for the downgrade. Holy crap man I've discovered several more issues. Anyway I could please get a refund? Also why did you take away the Audio Export feature?

  • @umanoid1523

    I don’t understand why you guys spend so much effort in built in sounds. While i use them for basic writing i ALWAYS USE a dedicated plugin as the sound source and just use the midi from the captains plugins. Unless you create a deep and dedicated synth id rather have you developing features like rhythms and chord libraries.

      We're focusing on rhythms and chord libraries now. I personally like having good "stock sounds" because they make me happy, so that's why we spent some time on doing that. I don't want to make a crappy-sounding plugin because it wouldn't bring me as much joy to use. By the way, I also use Serum, Phase Plant, Kontakt, and Diva, so I know what you mean about dragging MIDI from Captain to other sources. But I still want the starting point to sound good. -Yakov

    • @umanoid1523
      @umanoid1523 2 года назад +1

      @@mixedinkey gotcha. The stock sounds you used to have I thought were actually fine for that. I mostly used the piano or some strings. I was using it yesterday along with ORB. I exported my chords from Captain chords and imported into ORB which has a different randomizing feature. I ended up with some interesting alternate patterns that i wouldn’t t have come across just using captains. I used them along with the chords and baseline i generated from Captains.

    For me, it's a disappointing "upgrade" (?). The heart of this plugin was removed instead of expanding. No complex chords (already needed work), no progression library easily accessible. Where are the next level sounding chord progressions better than the last version? I'm told these things will be back and better. It's odd to release it before then when clearly users will expect the new features to be additions and enhancements. Please get back to BETTER Chords and progressions in Captain CHORDS. Take the triad progressions to new pro levels and ideas, and also not just the simple inversions like now but full chords used in todays EDM, pop, etc.. Auto. Shouldn't we load a progression and think, "WOW, that sounds full, pro, and amazing!"? Not, "this needs a lot of work and tweaking to make this pro and radio ready. Glad I have all of these nifty DAW-like editing features, rhythms and new synth sounds." Arpeggios, patterns, sounds etc. amateur chords. Strange priority in Captain CHORDS. A new & usable version does not exist in my mind, just hope for this beta version of ideas made for progressions that don't exist.

    • @TonyByte
      @TonyByte 2 года назад

      @@mixedinkey Yakov is an extremely patient and kind person. They show interest in taking all feedback, good and bad, and express a desire to use it for a better product. Although it doesn't change my mind about what I wrote, I do hope things turn around and get back to chord progressions first, then enhanced with patterns and other features. Otherwise, you simply have a pattern maker with nice sounds. People purchased for chords and progressions , that is a fact because patterns did not even exist. Obviously, they will want to take those chords and make patterns with them and the other requested features. Obviously, there will be positive feedback from people who who see patterns and better sounds. However, these are the same people who purchased for the chords first or they must prefer a pattern maker for their manual progressions. So when Yakov replies that clearly you can see positive feedback, it just boggles my mind for that to be a response to complaining that the heart of the plugin was removed. Chord progression. There will not be one customer who believes chord progressions should be the last priority and the least valued. Making patterns and sounds the priority by removing the core features does not make sense no matter how it is explained. As nice as you all are, it just seems that if this was not understood, I don't see a promising future of priorities for what Captain Chords used to be anytime soon. The way inversions were added back, if that is complete, doesn't improve them or clarify anything at all. It's a step backwards not even saying what inversion it is like it did before. I just don't get what you are trying to do. However, that's my opinion and it's not my plugin. I wish you all good luck.

For example full synchronization with the project grid in the DAW. And then the plugin lives by its own laws are not tied to the project. Show how to do it on a more serious example, not on a children's song. Make paid lessons. I think there will be those who will buy them. I'll be the first to buy.Thank you.

      To pave the road for the future updates, we had to change the way Captain Chords was developed so it can be improved. The old version saw everything as "block chords" where all the notes were played at the same time. It had lots of cool rhythms, but it wasn't capable of playing arpeggios, and it wasn't able to add decorations or ear-candy notes. The new version is capable of that, and more. It took us a while to change the audio engine and the pianistic chord engine, but that work is behind us. Now we can focus on making it the best composition tool, just like you said. We aren't limited by the old software code anymore - the new one is easier for us to expand, and we can actually create all the compositional tools that we've always wanted to make. In regards to your ideas - what was confusing or cumbersome? Please let me know, I'm looking for feedback. Post here, or email privately at contact@mixedinkey.com. Thanks! -Yakov

      @@mixedinkey Okay but arps, humanizing, "ear candy notes", etc. can all be done just in the daw midi after i drag it in, and its way easier to do it that way. The UI should show almost nothing but ideas for chords and notes. It hardly matters how theyre played and sound outside of basics that keep it simple. No one wants so much extra crap on the UI, and things to remember and tabs, etc, etc.

      Are you using FL Studio? By default, FL Studio has only 1 measure, so loop points of 0 and 4 are set, so only the first measure would be played in the plugin.
      You have to put Fl Studio in 'Song' mode, go to pattern and extend a Midi Clip to the number of bars you want 🙂
