On consoles its very important to put skills that require targeting in the shoulder buttons, otherwise you can't move the character and the camera at the same time as using it.
Hey thanks for making this Dottz!!! Love these explanations of things often overlooked by people. Adding this to my list of videos to refer new players to. Also I think watching this will help me better explain dual bar to people I'm working with myself.
Most important thing you missed. When and if set weapon bonuses apply from bar 2 to bar 1 and opposite. Armor and jewlery bonuses are active on both bars but swaping bars with weapon lose you that 5 pieces bonus Weapon+Jewlery for example, or not? Or does Maelstrom Staff Bonus on back bar for aditional damage on enemies in Wall of Elements stay after we switch bar to front bar and dps them. That is most confusing part of it.
Here's some other options besides Offense, and Defense: Ranged/Melee (Bow/2H) AoE/Single Target (Lightning/Inferno Staff) A Frost Staff can be used Defensively, but differently from 1H/Shield. You block with Magicka, which changes your Sustain. (I like to Alternate between Stamina, and Magicka, so while one is being burned, the other is recovering.) A major advantage to a Shield is it's 8 Armor pieces, so 8 Traits, and 8 Armor Enchantments.
I'm new to the game and just hit lvl 15 yesterday. (Am 19 now) but did not know how to set up second bar. So this vid come not have come at a more perfect time! Thanks.
Thanks for the video on a subject that not many newbies think about, though it was a bit DPS-heavy in content there, Dottz! I main a tank and want to pass a little knowledge on to starter tanks. I think of the front (S&B) bar as my face-the-boss bar, with short-range taunt (Pierce) buff/debuff (Heroic slash), main shield, main heal and a flex slot. I’m on this bar as a solid barrier, blocking the boss, and preventing it from hitting the group. The back bar for me is all about range and area/mob debuffs and crowd control, and has a ranged taunt, area debuff, chain, immobiliser and a flex slot. I use this bar to lay out an area of damage, pull mobs into it, and hold them there so they soak up the damage and stay put for the DDs to damage them as effectively as possible. Beginner tanks might be best with an ice staff on the back, but I prefer a lightning staff, and I’ve also trifled with with a bow. Until recently, I thought that two bars for a tank would be obvious, but I came across a CP600-something only using one bar, and helped him out with a little tutorial.
ya I remember as a tank going Oh i need to remember to put all my sword and board on one bar and have my frost staff on another. It took a while but now it is second nature and I carry that idea of buff on back bar and up close and personal skills. it also helps with focusing on skill. This was great to read! thanks for the comment.
Looks like this is what I was guessing when putting together 2 bars for a Necro Tank. Just how necessary is Warhorn as an Ultimate, I despise PVP so the odds of me ever getting this are limited to what ever daily rewards I receive that progresses my PVP traits; I'm kind of hoping I can get away with a Necro tank that uses Bone Colossus on the S/B Bar, with that Mass Resurrection Ult on my Staff Bar as an Oh S%$# button instead.
Bryan Turner You are expected to have it as an option as a tank, but there are situations where I use more selfish ultimates such as the S+B ult and barrier. I don’t pvp either, but it’s important to put up with either dying a lot in BGs or joining a Zerg and mending walls and such until you get levelled up enough for your assault and support lines.
Geee, your damage buff bar with longest duration first, then second and the third for my rotations, share my thought as well. And putting the fifth key as healing key, though I never thought about buffing on the back bar as defensive bar though. Now I learn something, thanks Dottz.
Consider your key bind for the actual bar swap as well. If you’re used to MMO or ARPG games, pick a standard modifier like shift, alt or cntrl. The bars don’t have to feel like two distinct things but enhancements of each other. Simple example can be a light heal as 3 and bigger heal as shift 3. Keep up the awesome content!
I started ESO last Dec. I like using front bar as single target and back bar as AOE. I put one buff and one heal on each bar. Just my system as a noob player to ESO.
I was struggling a lot with two bars, like for a really long time, but then I saw that in guides most of the time there are "buff/debuff" bar and "attack" bar and it was like a revelation to me. I am following this rule and have almost no problem with bar switching. Though when soloing I like to have damage shield on my "attack" bar, so I can toggle it any time without switching bars. Anyway, awesome video man I wish I had that kind of video when I was started

I always kinda found it funny I had this game a few years and I'd played I never got a character pass level 30 till now I just got bored of the class and build I was playing then I found out you could solo multiple things like dungeons and things like that.
Wow, Dottz, a Burning Spellweave inferno staff! Have you considered playing the lottery? 😂 🤣 Good video because, yes, new folks seek builds and rotations often without thought.
Hey what's that outfit you're using? Also, great vid. Thanks! This is not just a guide, this is a legitimate education video for us, new players! It's so well detailed!
I have more than 700 hours of gameplay and I have always used one bar, it is sad that the two bars could always be visible and usable instead of always switching, before playing TESO I played SWTOR and there the skill bar system is much better and there are many more skills that you can combine attacks, when I first played TESO I found it very basic, the two bars not being visible and usable at the same time is very annoying, I will have to adapt once again, it will not be easy . I liked the video, the part at the beginning that explains how to use the two bars, put the buffs in one bar and use the other for attacks, I really liked that idea, and I'm going to do it this way, thank you.
Thankfully I come from GW2, so double weapon and skill bars is second nature. Now, I have a question, as a warden healer, how would you go about it? Front bar healing, back bar buffs and a spammable spell for when healing isn't needed? Two restoration staves, or one restoration and one lightning?
OMG a follow guild wars 2 players *high five* I hope your liking ESO. I main gw2 and play eso on the 2nd as both games have something the other doesn't. gw2 spoiled me with auto-loot though! anyways if your on NA or want to join dottz discord I can answer questions between each game. hero points vs skyshards stuff like that. dottz has a guide on warden and on just how to level but ya you don't need 2 restoration staff and as long as both weapons are magical based (inferno lighting or restoration staff your skills will gain the benefit of the weapon. restoration staff heavy attack gains more resources so it doesn't really matter which is front or back just that they are diff. you 100% want a destruction staff as your second weapon so you can get an elemental drain and that takes a while to unlock. if your solo fire does more damage and lighting has a chance of causing concussion which is like vulnerable and helps the whole group. so that is a choice that is always debatable. Lighting is usually preferred though. read the passives it takes a while to learn. thanks for your comment sweetie!
Here's my problem, I'm interested in tanking and in games like WoW you have priority based rotations, in ESO builds it seems like the build crafters just dump a list of abilities on you saying these are important with no context as to whether one has more priority than another, do you set up your tank bars with a Single Target/AOE concept in mind, or are you supposed to put Buffs/Debuffs on one bar with random useful skills on the 2nd Bar? Fumbling my way through Open World on a Necro Tank build it seems as though all of the AOE abilities make sense on the Staff bar, while the single target abilities make sense on the 1H/Shield Bar.
Hi Dottz, thanks, I have been playing for sometime, never got around to restobar usage, learning to use both now, I am using PS. Hopefully, I wont die soon on battlegrounds after this.
As a console player (PS4), the weapon switch (Left D-Pad), it’s kinda a hassle to do. I played Final Fantasy 14 Online, the Backbar/Weapon Switch they have is you hold the L2 button and it switches, release it and your back at your front bar. I like that setting as I don’t need to let go of the left analog stick.
I was hoping you would explain the actual bars because I often wonder If 'front' bar has priority over 'back' bar or are there other (unknown by me) reasons for always using the front bar for most of your fight skills? Ive heard some folks saying never stay on the back bar, nor fight from the back bar or never put the same weapons on both bars and stuff like that which makes me think the bars are not equal in some way (skills aside). OR is it only due to the actual skills you put on the bar and the bars are equal until the skills are put upon them????
It would be hard to explain that because there's almost an infinite number of build possibilities, so it'd be impossible to cover that in a video like this. That's why I gave examples and explained my personal thought process. And the bars are equal, you could make your back bar your offensive bar and your front your defensive bar if you want. It makes no difference
My bars are both resto based. 1st bar is ADdps based teams focus on buffing/debufffing boss and sustaining team. 2end bar is aoe healing with team spell siphon for more magic based dps. Cause the 1st bar dosent do as well for mages. I do pve.
My question tho is that if you are trying to lvl both bars equally should you kill all monsters and bosses with your front bar and use the exp from turning in quests on your back bar or will the back bar get more exp that way
Don't worry too much about leveling them up perfectly equally. You'll end up using one to get most your kills,so it's not a bad idea to just turn missions in with the other. You can also place skills on your bar, even if you can't use them with the weapon that is equipped to that bar. Example, you can put the bow skill snipe on your two hander bar,you wont be able to use it,but XP will still be given to that skill & skill line. Not ideal, but if you find you're just not killing enemies very often with your bow,but you really really want to use barrage,it can be a way to get there without having to alter your play style or repetitively grind XP from some boring overland mob farm.
This is the tipes of tips I was looking for.... I play bow build I'm new 2 game so play mostly pve What build can I use on the other bar 2 give me buffs.... Currently I'm using destruction staffs so I can continue attacking when my stam runs out
I’m new to eso and I’m wondering where to get that skill saver. Could be useful for when I want to try different weapon builds without having to manually change one by one.
I’m still fairly new and get mixed up sometimes trying to use both bars. I use the back for my buffs and front for my primary attacks and sometimes draw a blank mid fight and smash wrong buttons lol 😩
Try putting two cheap harmless but different skills on the same button on both bars. Even if you're a veteran of the game, sometimes barswaps will fail to happen due to lag,or even funner, you'll swap bars, but it won't render correctly & your character will still be(visually) holding your other bars weapons, even though all your skills have allready swapped. You can also change the options to constantly show your skill bars. Or just become a werewolf. Werewolves only have one bar lol
what i did was put like my heal on one bar and then my fear on the other on the same button, that way if you mess up it still does something beneficial
This problem I couldn't overcome for a min, cause for example a stam player needs to use DW or 2h front bar and bow back bar, but to level all your skills equally you have to kill on both bars equally to lvl the respective skills , so basically i just stam warden bow /bow and magica sorc destro staff both bars tell i got better with the whole concept
I know this is an old video but I'm hoping you can still answer this for me. When you mention putting the DoT abilities in descending duration then renewing them in the same order, that doesn't make sense to me. Let's say you have a 15s ability, 12s, and 10s. If you cast them in order of highest to lowest, then your 10s one will run out before the 15s does. So you will drop uptime for the 10s one if you wait to reapply each one until the first one runs out. Can you explain why it's not better to cast them in ascending order?
So, hypothetically: Descending order using your 15, 12 and 10 example. Remember there is a 1 sec gcd in eso. When the 10s one needs to be refreshed, the 15 will have 3s left, and the 12 will have 1. If you do it in ascending order, when the 10s one needs to be refreshed, the 12 will have 3s left and the 15 will have 7s left. Technically speaking the most optimal way to maintain dots is through a dynamic rotation where you refresh as needed, but I wanted to discuss the static to help people new to bar swapping!
@@dottzgaming Oh I see.. So optimally, you would refresh each one as it runs out. But just to simplify things for the video, you say to do it in descending order. Makes sense. I've been playing for a few weeks now and have only been using one bar, so I can definitely see how that would be easier to do. Thanks for the reply!
Hey man. So basically I’m a magsorc right and I equip several sorcerer skills on my main bar so I can get that extra spell dmg in the passives. Is this a good approach or should I change it?
Class skill loaded bars are a staple of many sorc builds. Mage guild is insanely tedious to level up,but also provides some nice passive perks. There's no wrong way to play, but that said, some builds are way more viable then others. At the moment, mag sorcs are very viable. Especially as Damage dealers or tanks. Mag Sorcs have the highest burst in the game right now, which is reversed from most classes, where stam has the damage advantage. Mag sorcs also have a ton of utility class skills to choose from. About the only thing they lack are debuffs.
Hello. If you will want to make off tank for content and dungeon with nord dragon knight Stamina using 2h Axe/1h + Shield You will use Heavy or Medium armor ? . Im actually beginner only 1 month playing but i going to use medium Briarheart + Hundigs rage , monster pack "selene" . And exactly what you saying in this movei 1st bar for DPS / Second bar for Support and heal but i gonna try to use Magica for there skills to save Stamine for my DPS skills. But actually with this sets im going to be more DPS than tanky my problem is i need be half and half maybe i should go for heavy armors ? Which traits if you can help me please.
hi just got to read your question. the information your looking for is found on the website. as a tank read the passives for heavy as those are more important that doing critical damage. the bar for tank is more specialized then this very general guide on why you want to use two weapons. for sword and shield it is more about taunt and living and once you unlock inner fire and chains or some kind of pull skill if your not a dragon knight on your back bar so you can prebuff before going in. but ya check out the website. hope that helps and we SO NEED more tanks in the game.
The "bar swap" thing never bothered me in any Game. What really bothers me in ESO though is, that I need a secondary weapon for that switch (why?) and also I need to put my Summons in both bars, or my Clannfear and Matriarch get unsummoned every time I switch. I don't get why ESO doesn't just allow me to switch through skill bars without that chicane...
ive had the game only 15 days so im still really new to it, managed to get 7 days playing time mind... anyway, turns out ive been literally playing the game with one hand behind my bac, and i genuinely thought id managed to get some good damage going lmao
So then since I'm a Nightblade would it make sense to have all my major damage dealing powers on the first bar my shadow effects and Buffs on the second bar ?
The assassination skill passive stacking is great for getting extra crit outta your build, just like the siphoning skill passives are great for extra boost to heal'n.
I’ve been searching online to my dismay I can’t find anything how in the world do you use the actual switch button which button is it? During battle at all accidentally hit it or something because it’ll switch and I have no idea how to switch it back and I have to go back into the main menu just to do that could you tell me please how to switch from one bar to the next
I don't remember the default keybind tbh, I think it's tilde? But if you go into your keybinds you can see "weapon swap", and you can bind it to whatever you want. Make sure you have 2 weapons equipped In your char sheet to actually use both bars
Dont know if this is still live and anyone will see it but....on console how the hell do you swap to second bar? Because to get to the second bar you have to swap weapon....? So how would that be helpful to level up skills if your main weapon has skills assigned to it...and then you go to the second bar and put the same skills to "double up" levelling....but that's on the other weapon...which means that other weapon won't have any of it's own skills attached will it? It's very confusing.. The video shows him using a screen which isn't on console....clicking "2" for the bars...not on console...so how do you do it on PS4/5?
I can't help with the console keybind for weapon swap, which I'm sure you can find if you look through your button assignments in game, but check out my complete beginner guides skill section to understand how the bars work for skills and exp!
@@dottzgaming thanks for reply. I found something basically stating what I thought -your bar is attached to a weapon so unless you equip two of the same weapon, the level-up of skills will be split between to sets...but I see the benefit of using two of the same type of weapon by using 2 bars to get the skills up quicker.
I have smaller hands and in the excitement of some fights I can't hit the "`" key easily. I think I need to bind it to another key. Any suggestions if you have bound this to something else? Thanks.
Idk why they implemented such system but maybe because of the weapon switching but this is one of those system that i hate..considering you can alt key bind stuff.
The problem for me is the game just won't let me switch bars sometimes. That sick joke gets even "funnier" when I'm in combat, oh wait! This bs ONLY happens in combat! I'm pretty sure it's me not pressing hard enough, but then again, I'm pretty consistent with my button imputs.
that's just a current issue with eso and skill delays, and why so many vet players are annoyed with the state of the game. it absolutely kills high tiered combat where sometimes that weapon swap or a button click is NEEDED in that instant, but just nothing happens
Yeah,it's not just you lol One of many reasons why it's beneficial to have some sort of "oh sh!t" button on both bars . Something like "turn undead" will give you a stun,a defensive buff, a resource regen & a damage buff passive too. Put it on the same button on both bars if you have to.
To my fellow console players: switch your control scheme to version 3. It makes it way easier to switch bars, go stealth, etc. Takes some getting used to, but allows you to do everything without having to fumble around on the D-pad.
Can someone please show me how to swap my skills out ? I can’t seem to get it . I’m new so please don’t come for me . Just tryna get some help. I’m on ps4 and can only seem to find info for PC 🤦🏻♀️😭
Why does it seem like every RUclipsr is using the exact same background music these days? I get that it's non-copyrighted so it's legal to use but i keep hearing the same tracks on so many channels and it gets to the point where it becomes grating. It's like listening to the same track on an album on repeat every day
Really? I just don't do it because it is boring, You can easily handle this game with one weapon bar. Next thing people going to say is that you got to cancel animations. Heck many youtube videos shows easy 1 bar setups for all classes.
Let me know how that works for you in Vet Trials and PvP. I'd personally prefer to teach people how to use a basic game mechanic that will allow them to be better at the game long term, as opposed to telling them to ignore it. If you want to use one bar that's totally on you, but there is a ceiling to the content youll be able to complete.
@@dottzgaming vet trials and pvp? Content that is not even that good? Look, I understand what you are doing, and I am all cool with it. I just don't want you to assume that this is the only reason why people play with just one bar. The combat in this game is the weakest link, with exploits and class design skills that are dull. So 1 bar setups can work for 90 percent of the content. So many of us use 1 bar because it makes the tedious combat a little better.
@@dottzgaming Yes true but in a way that's semantics because if your bar is active its more or less the "front". Any equipped skill should earn xp. The player shouldn't have to worry about about remembering to swap weapons before a quest turn in.

Really would love if you made a PvP vamp build for nightblade, utilizing all the vamp skills if possible
I am just revisiting this game and I am following your leveling guide on Templar. Thanks for these guides
No problem!
Silly question. Is your main hand weapon tied to your primary skills and backup main hand weapon tied to your back bar skills?
You are an excellent teacher, thank you.
You're very welcome!
How do I switch bars in combat? You switched them without really showing how you did it. Thanks for the video.
If you go into your keybinds list you can see the default weapon swap keybind. I believe it defaults to tilde
@@dottzgaming That worked, thank you so much.
6:16 , how do you do that? sorry new player here :D ( talking about that set window poppin up)
Damned this dragon knight looks fucking crazy perfekt. Love it
Thanks man! 😁
I never thought that one day i will like your video 😂. GJ
Super backhanded compliment but, thanks I guess
Was listening to this while I was at work so sorry if you answered this, can you have the same weapon on the front bar as you can on the back bar?
Yes. Two separate items, but they can both be the same type (inferno staves, for example)
Dottz Gaming awesome and thank you for the reply! Much appreciated. Subbing now
I was hoping you would explain the actual bars because I often wonder If 'front' bar has priority over 'back' bar or are there other (unknown by me) reasons for always using the front bar for most of your fight skills?
Great video. Was wondering if you got any tips for people who use controllers? I for one use a Xbox controller.
My bars are both resto based.
1st bar is ADdps based teams focus on buffing/debufffing boss and sustaining team.
2end bar is aoe healing with team spell siphon for more magic based dps. Cause the 1st bar dosent do as well for mages.
I do pve.
Hey dottz! Great video😃 what addon do you use to get the thick outline on the actionbar icons?
Finally explained after watching a ton of build vids and not knowing what it meant🤣 the bro
Very helpful I struggle with this
Glad it helped!
Just switch on you second bar before completing quests. It works for me.
So, hypothetically:
Descending order using your 15, 12 and 10 example.
Glad the explanation helped :)
Love having healing abilities on 3.
do I have unlocked backup hand ? because..I don't see it on my class
Hey dottz what addon u use for setting a preset skill set for different setup? Thanks
Dressing room!
How do I switch between the bar with a short cut?
Very helpful. Thank you
😁👍
Hey all. New player to ESO here. What button do you use for weapon swap?
Personally, Z
@@dottzgaming Thanks :) Will try it out!
i get asked about lvl’ing two bars once you hit 15 - how the skills lvl on the front and back bar.
The skills on the active bar are what gain experience.
What level to unlock the back bar?
hey what is that add on you have that makes it easier to see ur buffs? i have darkui but that add on would be so useful. thanks!
action duration reminder
Just what I needed thx, i am weaving now lol
happy it helped!
ive had the game only 15 days so im still really new to it, managed to get 7 days playing time mind... anyway, turns out ive been literally playing the game with one hand behind my bac, and i genuinely thought id managed to get some good damage going lmao
what addons are you using UI wise?
there is a list of addons on the website, in twitch chat and a video on addons. there is way too many to list here.
The back ability option button doesn't show up for me do I have to be a certain level for it to show up?
15
So then since I'm a Nightblade would it make sense to have all my major damage dealing powers on the first bar my shadow effects and Buffs on the second bar ?
The assassination skill passive stacking is great for getting extra crit outta your build, just like the siphoning skill passives are great for extra boost to heal'n.
What motif pieces are you wearing?
there is a video just showcasing fashion on each of dottz characters. hope that helps!
How do you get to champion 1186?
Do summons still stay out after you switch bars?
depends on teh summon. necromancer pets do, warden bear and sorc pets need to be placed on both bars
what about a single target bar and aoe bar thats how i set mine up as a new player
I’m saying what buttons do you push
I have smaller hands and in the excitement of some fights I can't hit the "`" key easily. I think I need to bind it to another key. Any suggestions if you have bound this to something else? Thanks.
i use c
I use Z myself
@@dottzgaming Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try that :)
I use side mouse button very comfortable, if you have it of course
yes, mouse side button works for me
I use controller on pc and I don’t see anything about switching ultimate abilities 😢
How did he get the dressing room with the different sets to pop up like that?
it's an addon! and i assigned a keybind in the keybinds section
Wow I’ve been playing for a while and I never thought of putting dots in a order
its the big brain plays
Link to this build?
@@dottzgaming Well alright then, thanks!
Yeah,it's not just you lol
One of many reasons why it's beneficial to have some sort of "oh sh!t" button on both bars .
Something like "turn undead" will give you a stun,a defensive buff, a resource regen & a damage buff passive too.
Put it on the same button on both bars if you have to.
I liked the video but could not take my eyes off the outfit
It’s definitely easier to switch and play on the keyboard then it is on Xbox or PlayStation I have experience both
To my fellow console players: switch your control scheme to version 3.
I’m on ps4 and can only seem to find info for PC 🤦🏻♀️😭
how to put two bars ?
Make sure you have 2 weapons equipped In your char sheet to actually use both bars
I struggle with f***ing 3 second delay on xbox the server performance is crap like hell
The numbers are too far for me, and since i use a keypad, i just switched up everything
yep keybinds are totally personal and up to the individual
@@dottzgaming 👌
2bars old busted. 1bar new hotness
Lf sorc pvp, heavy dmg and survivability.
hacktheminotaur punching the air right now
Why does it seem like every RUclipsr is using the exact same background music these days?
I get that it's non-copyrighted so it's legal to use but i keep hearing the same tracks on so many channels and it gets to the point where it becomes grating. It's like listening to the same track on an album on repeat every day
Really long video but I learned a thing or two skipping though it
So many of us use 1 bar because it makes the tedious combat a little better.
omg you explain to much
It's just a clunky and unnecessary system in an otherwise good game. Also making it so only front bar skills get xp is gross.
It's your active skill bar that gains XP, not just front only
@@dottzgaming Yes true but in a way that's semantics because if your bar is active its more or less the "front". Any equipped skill should earn xp. The player shouldn't have to worry about about remembering to swap weapons before a quest turn in.
It's a piss poor system.
